I’m sorry but this is actually just not true. Snare has been played on the 2 and 4 for forever and the only people I’ve seen clap on 1 and 3 are people who just don’t do music
I don't think white americans would clap on 1 and 3. I'm not an American myself, but I'd say that music based on African-American rhythm patterns has become so widespread that unless you play classical, you will automatically learn to clap on 2 and 4. In Europe, the situation is quite different, as folk music of many nations uses the 1 and 3 pattern.
I was born in 1958. I was too late to hear most of these great musicians so I am more than grateful that my father past his love of this music to me. I did get to see Stan Kenton with my dad and later the great Lionel Hampton. Every Era has its greats and these guys were the greats of their Era and still reign supreme to me.
Did they not have the credits for the bass & guitar player in the original release of The Last of The Blue Devils movie? Boy, these two are incredible and deserve their dues.
Talk about Showmanship!! I was listening to the radio show/podcast called Riffin on Jazz, an episode about all the Jazz legends that attended Manascyst high school in Tennessee and they mention this Jimmy Lunceford guy. They rave about how he set the standard of his day, that when you see Duke's band dressing sharp or then you see a whole section of horns jumping up to play their part was all orginated by Jimmie Lunceford. Im blown away, I could imagine sitting in the Cotton Club or the Rhum boogie club being completely enthralled. Dan Grisson was very funny. The beat on the gong on the seats haha, T'wasnt a dull moment. well Ive seen better tap dancers in Cootie Williams band/show.
This was probably restored however "Because they were filmed with...well...film. Actual photographic movie film has an excellent resolution even when converted to digital formats. The reason why a lot of the 80's and 90's shows have a lower quality is because they were using the relatively new video tape technology which reduced the resolution and did not have a long shelf life if improperly stored." - from a redditor
