Hey Mark. Part of the group that was on the Stony Ditch Lake site here. As you paddled away we said "dude probably wants a quiet night to himself," so yeah, totally understand. That being said, I can't imagine being that far out solo for that many days. I needed 4 other people to commiserate with at the end of those portages. Great work on the video!
I assume you mean my inflatable lantern? There are several different models but go on amazon and type in LuminAID lantern. You'll get a bunch of results.
Yeah I could not remember why I subscribed ? Then I found it in your videos THE JORDAN RIVER . You see I partly grew up in the back country of Shelburne county . And my Family still has a cabin on the Roseway river , We still gather there 1nce a year . And some times the older ones talk about fishing the Jordan , the Shelburne , The Clyde , The Davis , The Silver , And many other places back there , And the old canoe routes + places where you can still see moose . Also secret trout spots . I figure pickerel took over those spots 😞. However being the way pickerel are , Now there will be food every where's .
@@Stretch691 after years paddling the tobeatic it's sad to see the old landmarks go. Buckshot cabin, Zane's boat. What are they doing to Pollard's camp?
I've always loved Nova Scotia, and between your video and those from Northern Scavenger - I'm wondering why in the world I didn't move there decades ago when I had the chance!!!
Google Maps shows a lot of trails around/near the lake. I want to drive my truck into a secluded area for camping/hiking. Any pointers would be great. Thanks!
Most of the areas surrounding Lake Rossignol are former logging road networks. These roads were used by Bowater Mersey for logging operations and all of these lands were sold back to the province when Bowater shut down. You are allowed to hike or mountain bike on these roads but the access to these road networks are gated at the Mersey River to deter motorized vehicles. There are lots of places to go in this area just know that you can't get a truck or ATV across the Mersey river into the road network beyond.
The first cabin (Pollard's) is not fit for use. Its quite dilapidated and falling apart. I also believe that one is private. The cabin we stayed in is open to the public. No reservations or permission. First come first serve
Hi Mark. Just wanted to say that I’ve been enjoying your videos over the last couple of years. I’m sure it’s a lot of work in the field and editing at home and I appreciate it. I do quite a bit of tripping in Toby myself too so; nice to see your vids and think about future trips. Thanks.
What a treat to see the cabin being used as it should. The first time I stayed in it after the reconstruction was finished was sort of surreal. Memories of the time that a whole bunch of us had spent working on this diamond in the rough just kept flooding in. No one had stayed in it during construction. I'm trying to talk Guy into going in. Great video. Many thanks for sharing.
Hi Mark My name is Joey, I really enjoye your videos. I'm one of the team that re-did the cabin on big tobiatic, Bats Rest. Took us five summers to do it, it was lots of fun, and to see people using it , so rewarding . Keep up with the good work, maybe we'll meet in the tobiatic's one day.
Hey thanks, glad you like my videos. That cabin is such an awesome spot, you guys did a great job. I’ll be going back again sometime for sure and probably stay a couple days next time to explore the area a bit more
Appreciated the vid Mark! I wish you had the camera on when you were running the rapids and got a little wet - for educational purposes of course! Did you run across any other canoeists? Safe travels on your future trips!
Ha! I also wish I had the camera rolling when I fell in. That would have been great. And no, I never ran across anyone the entire trip although some of the portages looked very recently maintained so I'd say that the area gets traveled through now and then
Appreciate your spirit and content of this trip. Did a similar trip of Shelburne River from Buchshot Lake to Low LANDING over 20 year's ago . Brings back great memories
People constantly warn me about Black-Bears. Most of the Bears I've encountered near Kejimkujik were quite friendly... Even stately! They're generally Coy in the darkness. Apparently they assume everyone is armed? I usually try to camp on Islands... Is that old Dam the same one described by AB Paine, where he slipped & lost the Net?
Wow this is neat , we own land on the hill in waverley and it was split up when the highway went through, I never knew it was like this just afew kms on the other side, crazy I’ve lived most my time in the woods and never made it back there
That's quite the trip, the tobeatic is really beautiful. I'd like to do it myself someday. Enjoyed the video, aside from the audio quality in certain parts. Regardless, I'll happily watch any future trips you record. Keep it up!
Beautiful footage... Most likely not heavily travelled, East of Tobeatic? Thanks so much...... I think the Devil's Stillwater, immediately following the Run, are ideal Trout Conditions?
The Jordan River watershed lies to the south of lake Rossignol and is in the southeastern corner of the Tobeatic (also extends past the Tobeatic border). As far as I can tell it is not traveled very often anymore. When I went through during the making of this video it seemed like it had been quite some time since anybody had been through there.
Great video! Heading in with a small group at the end of April. Wondering what you use for footwear, from what I can tell you have a dry pant or wader with stocking foot and then some sort of boot? Is it just a wading boot or something specific? Planning to wear waders with a stocking foot and some sort of hiker - want to keep my feet warm!
These are the shoes I'm currently using www.mec.ca/en/product/5003-150/Newport-H2-Sandals?colour=RVE08. But there are other similar options. And yes, my pants are a dry pant with built in socks that keep my feet and legs dry while I wade. Might be a good idea to have something similar as that trip requires a fair amount of wading in a number of places.
@@Stretch691 Thanks for the quick reply! I had been considering using waders with a neoprene stocking foot, I am thinking perhaps your pants have a full dry sock and not neoprene? May be time to purchase the proper pants for this trip.
Hey Mark, I am interested in chatting with you about your trip as I plan to run it with some friends (3 NB'ers and 1 NS'er) this spring. Are you able to share your email? Thanks, John B. Fletcher
I like those little dam areas they are neat . We don’t have anything quite like that here in Ontario. That’s a lot of cement poured into one of those babies.
Thanks for the video Mark, great trip. You had great weather and water levels! What month were you in there? is there any trout left in the river system?
That trip was in late April. I was hoping to find trout in there, and maybe there is, but the first cast I threw in I caught a chain pickerel so just gave up on fishing the rest of the trip.
@@Stretch691 ahhh, the nasty pickerel. After seeing your video I did check with an old school fishing guy from Shelburne way and he doesn’t think that there is any trout left in the Jordan system… so your call on not chasing them was probably a wise one. How did you fare for ticks?
@@saltedbiscuit Ticks were not an issue at all on that trip but that was also still quite early in the spring. Went below freezing every night. They do get pretty hot back in there at times though.
People do use power boats on the lake however the lake is overall rather shallow with lots of shoals and rocks so you would want to use caution if doing so.
Also the other problem is where to launch a power boat. The landing at the Devonshire road bridge would be ill-advised as a launching site for anything other than a canoe. Low Landing is a potential option though I believe it's private property and you may need permission.
Greetings from Nova Scotia! Fairly new to living in Nova Scotia and I am not into canoeing! I have looked at a number of topographic maps; wondering where the road accesses are to this very fine lake??? I have heard the lake has lots of cranberries and that would be my interest!
There are a lot of cranberries on the shoreline in some parts of the lake. The best access that I know of is to take the Devonshire rd outside of Caledonia and follow it all the way to where a gated bridge crosses the river. From here you can launch a canoe or walk along the shoreline and head down river to the lake. It’s about a 30 minute paddle to the main lake by canoe, not sure about walking time since I haven’t done it. The Devonshire rd is not paved but is usually in pretty good shape
