Would The juglone in the black walnuts have had much of an effect with how far away your garden seems to be? I have several and they don't shade my garden but they're not within about 75 ft so they've never given me issues
@instargardens
@instargardens 16 дней назад
Not if we left the tree necessarily. If the tree was within 20 feet and shed it's leaves in the garden, perhaps. But our concern here was we were using the mulch directly in the garden walkways. Over time, it will decompose and not post a problem. With our walnut mulch down for 2 years, we've had misc. weeds pop up!

Thanks. I was considering a worm compost. I don't have a garden, but a balcony that is slowly turning into a mini-garden, so the 'normal' way of composting the kitchen scraps might not be suitable for my neighbors with the smell and all. How does the worms do with regards to the smell?
@instargardens
@instargardens Месяц назад
Worms aren't really a part of the smell. A smelly compost comes from one that is out of balance, typically with too much green and not enough brown or not enough worms to help break it down! The PH level is good to know, but this is not of a more top priority to know about. The problems I had when I started to learn how to grow my food was: watering, lighting, lack of space, and I chose to not use pesticide, so what I said are 4 different common problems.
@eml4279
@eml4279 Месяц назад
Yes there are many factors to consider for vegetables to grow! I’ve had a couple clients though have all perfect conditions and come to find out, they were sold soil that was too high in pH and regardless of what fertilizer they used, nothing would grow.
@knowledgeandmultiskilled
@knowledgeandmultiskilled Месяц назад
@@eml4279 The soil's PH level should be reduced first before considering to use fertilizer. After the PH level is tested then someone can know what the soil PH level is, and I believe a person should also know the PH level of what he, or she wants to grow. The soil's PH level can either be decreased, or increased if necessary to the proper level then someone should be able to grow whatever he, or she wants. I guess you do not understand what the point is, for using fertilizer. If your clients were mine then I would set them on the right path. Regarding myself, I never had to test my soil's PH level. If I ever experienced what your client's experienced then I would be testing my soil, so I can learn what PH level my soil is at.

What about tge inside of the beds? Being they are in contact with daily watering?
@instargardens
@instargardens 3 месяца назад
No need! You don't want anything to come into contact with the soil, which would be absorbed into your plants, even non toxic stain! You could always line the beds with burlap for added protection if you live in a super humid environment.

Thank you Erica for this sensational presentation. I subscribed immediately! We are finally off the beach after 3 decades and back on rural acreage. So looking to learn 2023 garden advantages for retirees. It's waist-high. raised beds for us. Kasem's question was my question exactly. We have brand new raised beds (71" L x 30" W x 37" H) with liners and wood that is pine. We will need to change out the soil and liner after a few years (5 or 8?). I saw your excellent stain recommendation after a You Tube search on the subject, but not this important question and thus called Gardner's Supply to inquire about staining the interior of the bed with the whey-based stain that you recommended. This is an exclusive stain that they offer. I want our 11 raised beds to last 20 years. I am optimistic. The 6 legs of each bed will stand on 3" high cinder block and these legs we plan to paint the same rustic red to match our new Max Steel greenhouse that the company erected for us just 10 days ago. I tried to get Gardener's Supply to credit you the referral Erica, but it wasn't obvious to the operator how to do that; even when I gave him your RU-vid channel and your name. He did try to figure that out and asked if there was a code, but I didn't see one. He was very nice. His name is John and you may wish to see if you can gain the credit, as I purchased a dozen quarts of the (cloud white) PolyWhey Exterior Wood Penetrating Stain Treatment - "Gardener’s Exterior Wood Stain". Husband and I are talking about shoring them up on the inside with cedar now after reading this discussion .......
