@@StarTopus Aang: 100 years ago. 1- I agree with the comparison of the live action movie with the netflix series, with an asterisk. It's a different conversation, but, yes, in a vacuum, the M Night movie is leagues worse. 2- I don't like seeing Sozin (or Ozai) so clearly so soon, it takes away from the looming, force-of-nature-style threat they both were, Sozin as the original and (through Azulon) Ozai as the current iteration. 3- I didn't like seeing Sozin's plan for two reasons: a) the plan wasn't actually explained, just that it was there, which both takes away from the big reveal later and doesn't mean anything at this stage due to the lack of worldbuilding, and b) the plan, even if explained, sucked. The plan was to false flag an attack on the Earth Kingdom, which didn't work (which is good for Sozin), but led to the Air Nomads immediately choosing to send Aang away, thus removing him form where Sozin was going to be. The plan would have failed if it had worked faster, and Aang would have been much safer within the Earth Kingdom (which is why the plan NOT working was better for Sozin). This would have been better left as the non-descript ambush from the original. 4- I entirely agree that the lack of showing instead of telling, especially for Gyatso, was bad. We didn't have the bonding or the warmth for the relationship from the audience's perspective. This is the same for Aang's characterisation, too much tell not even a little bit of show. 5- Yeah, making Aang not run away was terrible, also agree. Also, making Aang stupid enough to fly into a storm to "clear his head" is ridiculous. 6- The tornado was terrible. The effects were cool but it didn't do anything for anyone in-universe. She didn't actually help at all. 7- Gyatso was well written, I believe, we just didn't get to see nearly enough of him to understand that. If I hadn't have seen the original I wouldn't be nearly as aware of how much of him was behind his actions in the live action. Half-agree-half-disagree with this point. 8- It should have been done later, for so many reasons, and even done this way, it could have been done several magnitudes better. Agree with you here. Aang: Opening and South Pole 9- Gram Gram doing the opening when she did, how she did, after the existing opening, was stupid and there is no defence for it, completely agree. It wasn't natural in the scene, it was information that was delivered to the audience out of place/order, and it was delivered in a tedious scene that just drags the mood out. 10- @9:22 I heard that, how dare you 😆 11- I have a theory about why Kyoshi did the narration and it's not a good thing, but it's still a bit of a mystery why she did this and not Roku or Katara. 12- The lack of bonding between Aang and Katara feels like a bad but intentional choice, which continues through the entire series. 13- Zuko and Iroh are great. The actors did the best they could with the terrible scripts they had. 14- Katara and Sokka having pretty much NO relationship and almost as little care for Aang in this is choice that I feel is best described as gross. It feels gross that Katara seems to only care about Aang because she waterbends better and Sokka will outwardly state next episode that now that Aang is gone they can go home - it feels like they are both just using him. You kinda touched on this and I agree in general but wanted to put a bit more nuance to my stance. Momo: episode 1 and 2 bridge 15- Yeah, true, it should have been an ending. Momo in general seems to have been forgotten and then just shoehorned into the live action.

​@@StarTopus Warriors: The Avatars 16- Aang being changed into this moody kid who speaks like he's determined to take on the role as Avatar but acts like it is an afterthought is terrible. I agree that they didn't properly land whatever this odd change was supposed to be. Aang no longer doing ANY waterbending is terrible and the in-universe comment at the end of the series that he should have learnt waterbending is ridiculous and not as clever as it was supposed to be. 17- Aang actively putting his grief aside to save the Northern Water Tribe while also getting called out for being immature and responsible is directly shown in the show as all the people accusing him of running away when he specifically did not run away. Can't agree enough on this point. 18- I don't think it's fair to comment on child actors in breakout roles, but I think I would agree with your comment. If the actor were given a script that wasn't dragged out of the feces-ridden floor of whatever typewriter-laden monkey-enclosure Netflix use as a writers room I think he (and most of the actors) would have flourished in his (and their) role(s). 19- Kyoshi was a disgraceful recreation in this series for multiple reasons that I'll go into on it's own separate comment if you want but for now I can't agree that she's "fine". She's bad, she's definitely not in line with her scenes in the original, she's specifically against one of Kyoshi's defining traits, and it's disgraceful at the least. Warriors: Sokka and Suki 20- Sokka's sexism wasn't a defining trait of his life, it was a symptom of a defining trait, and him overcoming it was the beginning of his growth throughout the whole show. Removing the sexism is not bad. Removing the flaw for him to overcome in order to begin that growth is. If they had replaced it with a similar flaw to overcome, it would have been fine. Making him, (as you say) "perfect" and not giving him any way to grow makes him static, boring, and unrealistic. I completely agree with you here. 21- Sokka isn't funny I believe because they didn't really care much about funny at all in this adaptation. I... don't think his acting is terrible, but it certainly didn't stand out in this role. 22- To summarise my view, they basically just Suki a romantic foil for Sokka and it's disgusting that they removed "sexism" and then did a sexism. I believe this is similar if not the same as your view. Warriors: Zuko and Iroh and co. 23- Zuko is a good character still, and the actor does well with what he has. But the phrase "character assassination" is what I use to best describe the treatment Iroh got in this remake and I cannot possibly agree with this being an adaption of him anyone should be happy with. There was a review done of the M Nigh movie in which the reviewer said [paraphrasing], "M Night seemed to understand what scenes the4 audience really liked, but not WHY we liked them, and because it was only a surface-level understanding, we didn't get the depth those scenes needed that really made them what we cherished." Same thing. They tried to capture the surface-level Iroh jokes, appearance, mannerisms, without understanding WHY he is how he is. There is one scene which is a microcosm of this in the second episode: Iroh is going to tell Zuko something very important, and he does not finish his sagely advice, because he is distracted by food. Iroh always liked food, and loved tea, but they were never more important to him than Zuko. He gave advice to Zuko, even when Zuko asked him not to, because he wanted Zuko to be prepared for what was to come. Having Iroh abandon a piece of sagely wisdom that Iroh decided Zuko needed to hear, in order to get food, is pathetically-wrong for his character, and far more in-line with the Ember Island Players depiction of Iroh. It's these little things, where they understood Iroh was motivated to give advice, and liked food, but didn't understand why either of those things were, nor which should take precedent, which prove they did not understand his character. Sidenote: These small misunderstandings and misinterpretations are rampant through the show, often not so small, and a clear indicator that season 2 and 3 will all just be more piles of so much flaming scatt. 24- Zuko is basically perfect. The issues I have with Zuko are outside of the actors control and I think said actor should definitely have this on his resume for the rest of his career. 25- I don't feel I'm in a position of knowledge or experience to shoot down an actor unless they are egregiously bad at what they do. That being said, one observation I made about Zhao in this series was that he is closer to Wormtongue form the Lord of the Rings movie series than he is to Zhao from the animated Avatar series. He's also not the main villain. He's not even an antagonist. He's the tool of the actual antagonist, dropped as a mystery reveal in the last episode: Azula. Zhao is a skeevy, underhanded, and apparently (according to the text) incompetent excuse of a commander. Often in depictions of gangs there are the ones who talk and the ones who act. The voice, often surrounded by the bigger brutes who do the work. That's Zhao. He's the voice telling others what to do. Actual Zhao did command soldiers, but he also did a bunch of stuff himself. In those hypothetical gang set ups, the voice is usually also the brains. But in this instance, Zhao is not. Azula is the brains. Zhao is just ambitious. That's it. He has NO other positive traits. He's incompetent as an officer, he's incompetent as a foil to Zuko, and he's incompetent as an independent force in the world. He's just incompetent, he's not threatening, and the one thing worse than him rolling over and showing his belly to Zuko and Iroh at the end of the Warriors episode is that Zuko then begs him to be nice. The whole set up with and around Zhao is terrible. He's not intimidating, he's not intelligent, and he's not anything that animated Zhao embodied. The fact that the only time we see him fight is either him throwing a single fireball before running like a bitch, or him getting wrecked by Zuko without much effort or strife on Zuko's part just supports that idea that he's nothing like Zhao. There's the first two episodes.

@StarTopus the only reason I haven't is because 1- it's a lot of time, and 2- it would make me sad. Plus, if I was gonna start a RU-vid channel I'd definitely start with a serenity episode 1 character- storytelling breakdown rather than a netflix avatar critique 🙂
