The Northern Beaches Line would have crossed the Harbour Bridge on the Eastern 2 lanes and then entered North Sydney Station (hence why it has 4 platforms) before continuing in a tunnel to the Northern Beaches. Though probably not Manly itself.
John Whitton (you mentioned him when you were at Meadowbank Bridge) was a great engineer who made a major contribution to railways in NSW, along with other projects.
Beneath Sydney's Central Station are the mysterious platforms 26 and 27 built in the 1970's but never used and blocked from the public. Some say they are haunted because of all the bodies that were removed from the Sandhills Cemetery. They are the true Ghost Platforms.
The sun does move from right to left in the Southern Hemisphere, where this video was filmed. Toilets flush in the other direction too. The world is an amazing place!
I was fascinated by the Mortuary Station as a kid. Although you weren't supposed to go there, I used to sneak in and walk along the platform under the cloisters. It was another beautiful Sydney sandstone building, and it seemed a pity that it was just being used as temporary place to put freight in transit. The notion that funeral trains would take the departed on their final journey from there seemed rather macabre, but made sense when you considered how rough the dirt roads would have been on the long trip to Rookwood. I'm really glad it has been retained and looked after.
Thanks. Always interesting to know the history of Sydney's trains. I know that they originally had plans for a branch line from North Sydney to the Northern beaches.
