Mark, I'm amazed that you reply to every comment not to mention how professional your comments are. I haven't stopped thinking about this lens since I saw this video a year ago. I think I've watched this video 4x now. I was waiting to see what Sony would come out with in this focal length, but the new 85mm GM2 is a bit disappointing since it's larger than the Sigma 85mm f1.4. I currently carry the 20mm f1.8 G, 35mm f1.4 GM, and 70-200mm f2.8 GM2 when traveling, but I end up just taking the 20mm and 35mm when I'm walking around the city because I like carrying a small sling instead of my backpack. So, my 70-200mm gets left at the hotel unless I know that I will need it. This has got me thinking about telephoto primes that will fit in my slings. I have a 3L Peak Design sling that fits the 35mm and 20mm. I tested it and it will fit my 35mm GM and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 but it is a tighter fit than I like. The Sony 85mm f1.8 would be perfect but I have found that I enjoy using an aperture ring. I really hope that Sony updates the 85mm f1.8 to a G version, I would buy that in a heartbeat, but I think I am finally ready to pull the trigger on this Sigma. I also purchased the Bellroy 10L camera sling because it can fit all three primes in it and it has less padding than the PD sling so I can fold it in half and it takes up the same amount of space in my bag as the PD does when not in use.
The 85mm F1.8 is an excellent lightweight Portrait Prime, but it is not comparable to a GM II - check out my review of the GM2 lens: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZZuLWi8A-WA.html
Hi Mark, thank you for your amazing body of work on your RU-vid channel. It’s truly invaluable to the photog community. Are you still using these smaller bodies on the road? If so, are you rocking the A7cii or the A7CR? Cheers from London. Christophe
I have been posting every day for the last two months while traveling in Europe with the A7CII and A6700. Some people ask me why I chose the A7CII over the A7CR, when actually I chose the A7CII_A6700 over the A7CR. Head over to Patreon.com/markgaler if you want more information on my workflows.
My new Wotancraft Pilot 3.5L has arrived (took 1 week to arrive in the UK - with no customs duties) For those interested, it fits my a7R5 with the following lenses: 1) Sigma 14-24mm 2.8, camera face down 2) Tamron 28-200mm, camera face down or lying on the side 3) Any combination of the 20-70 or 20mm or 85mm with 1 lens on the camera and 1 on the side 1) and 2) with space for the 20-70 f4 or 20mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8 on the side using the divider provided with the bag. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the Great Review. I am still struggeling to upgrade from my a6400. I am mainly shooting landscapes, street and Wildlife from time to time. Do you think it would make sense or better safe the money?
There is no quick yes or no answer to your question without knowing a lot more information about your circumstances - I support Alpha owners make the most appropriate decisions about gear choice on my Alpha support channel- Patreon.com/markgaler
Depends on the camera as it can be assigned to the AF-On button in the very latest Alpha cameras (starting with the A7RV). There is a workaround using the monitor as a touch pad with your eye to the EVF.
6:27 at last a reviewer who understands the concept of equvalency: APS-C is not free lunch to extend (actually narrowing) the field of view, the DoF and noise performance cost is F4.2 as you excellently noted here. Fantastic, reliable and authentic review.
Great comparison. I'm having my a7c ii with me whenever I don't feel like carrying my a7r v, but my default 35mm f2 Sigma lens is just too big for true EDC purposes. I'm going to swap it out for the 35mm f2.8 Zeiss lens soon. I have another "small-ish" Sigma lens, the 24mm f2, but that thing is just so insanely sharp that it's actually worth the size and weight.
I have a lens of Sony DSLR a350k 75-300 and I need a lens adopter for Sony ZV-E10 camera now I am confused about how to find the correct adopter if I am going to order what should I write A to E mount or something else ? Please guide
Dear Mr. Mark Galer. Thank you for your tireless education work. I recently had unexpected failure of my ILCE-7RM4A camera. In Landscape regime with single shooting, the camera changed a drive mode on BRK DRO Lo. I carefully looked at these photos: on each shot 3 almost alike photos. What a useless work to deleted hundred photos. Why is that failure? Is there remedy to avoid this nasty situation. I post this my question on a forum, but got opinion that is user problem. Maybe so and maybe not. Please advice me. Also I kindly ask dear fellows to respond. Very respectfully David
I'd say it's overall the best 85mm lens that you can find. However, the GM1 has a slightly nicer rendering to my eyes, like 10% better. Everything else however is way better in the GM2.
I suppose Bokeh is in the eye of the beholder - Sony worked on the original design for this lens to improve the bokeh and reduce the color fringing. This may not be to everyone's taste.
Hey Mark. Thank you a lot for those great videos and tutorials. Traveling to Europe? If you make a stop in Germany, let me know. I could give some tipps for right photo spots or cities you should go to. Best greetings
I am not sure if i like this move… we see a lot of short zoom lenses… 16-25, 17-28, 20-40 etc. My problem is that when i like to have longer zooms i love 16-35mm. I am saving up to buy the sony gm, now i use a Tamron 17-28, which i love but i just don’t want to change lenses that much. Sometimes i take it of and get my 28-75mm and then thinking.. ogh now it was better with the 17-28 because i need 24 for instance…. Yes sometimes uou can not walk back… but moest of the times i have the 17-28 and want 30 or 35… so i like to have less but good lenses then more and have to change a lot. Yes they are smaller but what isf you meed 4 smaller then 2 heavyer, sorry but 4x400-500grams is 1,6- 2kg however the 16-35 and 24-70 together are lighter and smaller then those 4 combined…
These lenses make a lot of sense to me. The overlap that is found between 16-35 and 24-70 does not mean you need more lenses because of the shorter focal range of the Sony's compact G zooms. They also save the user money and unnecessary weight in their camera bag.
This is the best video I have watched on this camera. Thank you! I have been so conflicted on getting it as I fear it's not as sharp as I'd like but this video has really steered me toward giving it a go. It's felt like abit of a gamble due to the price and not being able to try it out. I'm put off by the x100v/vi due to the fixed prime as I really want to the zoom capabilities. The sacrifice is a bit of the quality with this camera but you've how good it can look and how the skill of the photographer plays a huge part in having great photo - no matter the camera! Sony's autofocus tech is very appealing too! Anyway thanks again for this video. Dropping you a follow!
Thanks for your positive feedback. I find that making ultra high-definition examples available is important for users to be able to see the quality any given product can achieve. I have an eBook available for this camera from Patreon.com/markgaler
I am currently on assignment in Europe for 10 weeks (with my Pilot 7L and EasyRider 12L, so a new backpack review will have to wait until November when I am back in Australia.
Thanks Mark, I just bought one of these. I have the 9L new city explorer / scout daily and it is a tough bag but a bit heavy when loaded with gear. I'm shocked you get all your camera gear and clothes into these two bags. India is a hot and sweaty country, you must love doing laundry :P
Yes I use a 7CII in conjunction with an A6700 (two bodies instead of one). An A6700 is exactly the same image quality as an A7RC shooting in APS-C mode. I expand on this topic on my Patreon.com/markgaler Alpha support channel.
Love ur vids Mark! I’m very interested in ur ebooks. I went to ur Patreon page and it says there is a $10 monthly charge. In the description it says there is a one time payment to access ur ebooks. Is this correct?

Ok - new A6400, turn it on, then it turns off after 1 minute. I can set it to 30 minutes, but how can I use HDMI 'out' if it shuts off after 30 minutes?
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Bluetooth is not on. After 3 hours on youtube yesterday, I found...yes, the power save turns the cam off after 1,5,10,30 minutes, and the cam shuts off. But, plug in the micro HDMI to laptop, and magically, the camera stays ON for hours. No tweaky apps needed. It was that simple.
Would be great to see how you organise your bag like a view from the top. For a 1 lens setup with an a7r5 + 1 prime or 20-70f4 do you think the 2P would be enough or the 3.5L would be a better fit. Also any idea if the R5 + tamron 28-200 would fit in the 3.5L. Thanks for your help.
At 46:46 you said you have up to 10 settings you can register. I am a bit confused as I thought you could only have 3 modes plus the extra M1, M2 and M3. I mean, I would love to have more presets available.
3 memory recalls + 3 Recall Custom Holds + M1 to M4 = 10. The newer models also allow 3 more for movies snd 3 more for S&Q- I provide detailed guidance in my eBooks available from Patreon.com/markgaler
This A to Z series of videos deals with cameras that have the new menu system. The original A7C has the older menu system and may not include many of the new features (including this crop image function). I do however make an eBook available for the original A7C on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.
You can bracket exposures and use Lightroom's merge to HDR feature. I am unsure as to why they removed the in-camera JPEG feature. It has not been included in Sony cameras for some years.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks! I was aware about this. I am currently own the Sony RX10 IV and I am just shooting JPG pictures. I am thinking to buy a a6700, but I do not want to start shooting raw picture or starting to use Lightroom's. To my knowledge the a6600 had HDR included. I think Sony did kick out a important feature for some less professional users like me. Other producers have still HDR included.
I’m debating between the a1 and 7rv. Considering I’m a college student I much rather go for the cheaper option. But can anyone tell me why the a1 is more than the 7rv even though the a1 is much older? This is the most money I’ve spent on gear and want to make sure I make the right decision
This lens has been a fun favorite of mine now for one week because I can actually carry it and the photos have been beautiful. Looking forward to taking it many places!!! Thank You for this review, it is by far one of the most educational and easy to understand.
If you divide by 1.5 you get the reduced angle of view but not the reduced resolution. Dividing by 1.5 again gives you the correct resolution decrease. I am not sure what else you want me to say except that the maths works. A mathematician could probably give you a mathematical explanation but I am a photographer.
When I was at school I was given the maths to work out the volume of a cylinder, but I never questioned the formula I was given by my teacher - just a reassurance that the math worked.
Brilliant Mark. As a Landscape Photographer who finally migrated to a Sony A7R III from Canon I've found this video extremely helpful. Notably the C1 setting to Lower limit and +109. You've earned yourself a new subscriber here. Keep up the good work.
- and it will continue to get even easier if Sony decides to leverage the help of its AI processor it has been putting inside the cameras for the last two years.
Hi there Mark Thanks for your videos I frequently turn to them for guidance. Just a couple of comments about your focus stacking video. I unboxed my new a7RV yesterday and i've been playing with focus stacking as that was the main/only reason I upgraded from my a7Riii. I'm using a Sony 90mm macro f2.8 lens and your comment concerning being able to use it in manual mode results in a curt error message from the camera saying that the lens is not compatible with focus stacking. Switching to auto focus mode solves that issue. I've found that getting the camera to start on an initial point of focus is a bit problematic. I really want the first image to be just a smidgin in front of the closest point I want to be part of the stack and for the objects I generally work on (orchids and other native plants) there is nothing there. I've spent all day trying to wrestle this beast and whilst I have managed a couple of decent images. I'm still not 100% happy. I'm sure its mostly me because the images that I'm happy with are quite good. Maybe a follow up video using some realworld macro examples would be helpfull. The shots i'm happy with ended up with 150 images covering 30mm. I'm still experimenting to try and reduce this as it certainly creates time and storage issues in the workflow. Peter
