For many years the area we call Chelas was divided by zones. They changed to other names due to house market and reputation etc but residents still use the old names. Zona I - Bairro das Amendoeiras Zona M - Bairro do Armador Zona J - Bairro do Condado Zona N1 - Bairro da Flamenga Zona N2 - Bairro dos Lóios Zona L - Bairro das Salgadas Basically you walked around Zona I. One of the chillest ones but still, you can walk around everywhere, you're respectful and just minding your business I think nothing would happen unless you explore further or at night. From what I see it is native Portuguese people in this neighborhood at least. But other neighborhoods like this in other parts of the country could be immigrants but not sure.
Hey, I came across this video, and as I lived in zone I for 10 years because I studied at ISEL, I can say that it is an extremely peaceful place to live and that I would happily go back there. Zone J had some "bad reputation" many years ago, and with some expression due to a national movie called " Zona J " that demonstrated the challenges of living in that community. Nowadays there are common problems as in some neighborhoods, but they can happen everywhere. Chelas will be forever in my heart
It really was a nice place, I'd live there as well. I also watched Zona J the movie. I wished I could have found zona J to visit but I did not know it was called Condado.

Acho que ele não tem bem noção da realidade do que lhe poderia ter acontecido, se calhar tiveste sorte a hora que foi e com que te cruzaste. Continua com essas ideias de filmar bairros perigosos vestido dessa maneira e com esses óculos e habilitas-te a ires parar aos cuidados intensivos ou pior.
Hi Nick, thanks for the video, I´m always curious to know what foreigners think of this city. I was raised in California by Brazilian parents who lived in Rio and Petrópolis, so at 23 yrs ago I made the move and have been teaching English down here ever since. In case you find yourself interested in knowing more about the city, through the eyes of a fictionary novel then I wrote a book in 2010 called- 'Serendipity´s Matterhorn, A Contemporary Fairytale', (ebook on Amazon). I can´t promise you´ll like it but it´s good for tourism and history since the story uses the city as the back drop. Anyway, I don´t suppose you´ll ever return however, if ever you or anyone who got interested in Peter´s city, as a result of your explanation, comes for a visit then perhaps reach out. Once again, it´s fun to watch material about my adopted town, so I really appreciate your work and I hope more come to see it in the future! Btw, the Wright Brothers flew the first sling shot since planes have to have engines, but the tech, tests and funds were a French thing which really had nothing to do with Brazil, since at that time the country was only a giant plantation, so I´m afraid neither Brazilians nor Americans got it right.
