Wonderful interview. Thanks Michael for being such a great interviewer and listener and thanks to Gary for having been such a wonderful human being and professional musician. Your sounds will be heard until the end of times and your reputation will live on.
Nice. One trumpet giant's thoughts on the passing of another. I remember first hearing Gary on a Woody Herman record a very, very long time ago. A remarkable career.
I remember listening to Bill Watrous and a Canadian Trombonist Ray Anderson play crazy high in the upper range. The hard part is to play with ease in that range and not struggle to play those high notes. Gilkes is definitely unique the way he can play those notes with clarity.
What an amazing interview this is, with one of the coolest in Jazz today, Marcus Printup. The stories Marcus relates are so insightful and drenched in Jazz history - freakin' blows me away! He's got a heart of pure gold and it does me heart good to see this. Thanks sooo much!
Scott Hartman taught me at Boston University, and he's the best teacher I've ever had. He's like a father or uncle to me now, and I learned a lot from him. Yale students are really lucky to have him. He helped me listen and think differently, not just to be a better musician but also a better person. Thank you forever, Scott.
I had heard about Weston, but I must say, after this interview, I hold him in very high regard. He is a well-spoken individual, and it appears that he is a truly unique artist.
Michael, it was a fantastic opportunity to learn about Shires. Thank you. Although I haven't had the chance to play with it myself, many of my closest friends in Boston use Shires, and James Monagham, in particular, is one of my dear friends. As a conductor now, I no longer need it, but I am watching all your interviews. Much appreciated, thank you.
I heard Peter performing at the Jeju International Brass Festival. Not only does he play exceptionally well, but I also appreciate what he represents for the entire brass community. The duo with Constanze (pianist) and the repertoire were amazing. Fantastic chamber music and artistry.
The F major scale is at the very end: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EArHR1pmOhM.html&pp=ygUeYWZ0ZXIgeW91J3ZlIGdvbmUgcm95IGVsZHJpZGdl
Very informative interview by a great trombonist who is living the jazz life as a top musician, knowing and interacting with so many fellow jazz greats!
