I had 3 pretty good seasons midway into my whitetail journey were I had interactions with big bucks and generally was just always on deer in highly pressured public land. Then I got too busy/too lazy last season, didn't follow all the steps to scent control and laid down too much scent and had good spots go cold
My grandpa was a part of the Pope and young club and like I used to always tell people growing up about my grandpa and who he is is by telling them about he is literally one of the main reasons we have a archery season in washington state is because of him because he graduated school at UW and passed the bar exam and became a defense attorney later on to become a prosecutor and he practiced law for 47 years but anyways he not only was a part of the pope and young club but is one of the original founders of the Washington state bow hunters club also known as WSB his name is Albert Antonio Rinaldi Jr he's an amazing person
Find the Waddell video where his mechanical literally bounces off the deer inside of 40 yards I think it was and then remember this entire conversation with Troy
Got two bucks with this head last year! Love em. Easy to sharpen. I dedicated one head to be my practice head, Shot it maybe a dozen or so times in my target. One night I forgot my quiver but thankfully left my practice head in my vehicle. (Out of the package the heads are pretty dull and I didn’t sharpen this head) wasn’t sure if I should even attempt at shooting a deer but still hunted with it. Shooter buck came in…. 35yds quartering away, pass through on both sides but fletchings got caught. Deer expired in 15 secs. Arrow broke off and I found it in the spring, looks brand new. Won’t shoot another head. Love em! Shooting 60lbs and 522 taw. Think I have 18%foc
No you are more likely to miss with a heavy arrow. More drop/arch substantially more time of flight It literally is the worst thing you can do if you hunt in pressured area
I read his book and started buying scent lok clothing that is gently used on eBay I find scent lok to be high quality clothing and I been getting it for 1/3 the retail price The guy is a top killer
Because you really have to work at scent control. I do everything John says to do when it comes to scentlock and sometimes as the season goes on I’ll screw up and touch something without gloves on. Once in a while a deer will know something is not right but they never blow and run. It does work
John is the man! I had an opportunity to meet him and shoot the shit at Apple Creek Campground. I gotta admit, i was "star struck" . 😂 Great guy! Good luck this season, all
I come from the Roger Rothar days with his fixed 3 blade Snuffer, Wensel Woodsman, Magnus I and II and many more similar to listed. My only issue with those killing hogs and whitetail was the tips rolling over. There are a couple solid single bevel companies who produce quality like VPA. I've shot a plethora of designs of broadheads from solids, replaceable blades and mechanicals the past 40 years. Single bevel is my favorite and most dependable.
Bowtech and Elite have made bows easy to tune! I own a few flagship bows a year but my Bowtech is so much easier to tune than my PSE Levitate. Saying this I can shoot fixed heads well at distance with the Bowtech but have some work to do it with the PSE. I shoot mechanicals and prefer mechanicals so I tune to best of my ability and let it rip. Lost a Big Ohio Buck last year on a bad shot with a killzone. Blood was crazy for 300 yards and watched deer bed but never found him! I have killed tons of deer with NAP Killzone with good results but this deer amped up in rut took the hit. Hunt long enough you will loose an animal regardless of broadhead.
I got a core ss, the tuning is insanely easy. Brand new it had a bad tear in the paper tune. I literally eye balled the the cams to start. Went from a 2.5 in tear to 1/4 inch tear on the first try.
That hunt was when Jared was with Midwest Whitetail. I’m sure MW has the rights to all of Jared’s old video and still images. They actually showed the hunts during that season on MW, but not the actual buck until after it was killed.
Ed Ashby said that he found out that a 650 grain arrow would reliably break bone when shot from his 94 lb longbow, which, pushed that arrow at 184 fps. He said momentum was the factor you are looking for. So, with a modern, efficient bow, pushing an arrow of about 450 grains or so, at about 260 - 270 fps, we get the same momentum figure as Ed Ashby's slow, heavier arrow.
@EdAshby I feel a little dumber now that I've read this response, dumber for the comment that I had written. I do however feel more educated after reading the response from you. Thank you!!!
