The older I get the more nostalgic I seem to become. Hence the general flavour of the clips you'll find here.
The Isle of Wight is the best place to live ...... so there!
Hopefully, one day I'll be able to upload some footage of the band I'm a member of: "ContraBluesBand". Until then, if you live on the Isle of Wight and like Rhythm & Blues, check the IWCP for details of our next gig or go to our website: www.contrabluesband.com

Nice film. Trains pulled by steam engines used to start moving incredibly gently. You barely could feel anything, no jerk or vibration, I suppose because any sudden acceleration would cause wheel slip. I’d love to travel by steam train again…

One of my brothers who lives in Germany sent me this great video to-day. We use to go to Richmond weekly with our friends and cousins to the disco club situated above the ice cream parlour on the corner of the road leading down to the Palm Court Hotel. We would nip in to the hotel before hand to have a drink or two and on Sunday evenings they had jazz nights with different groups and bands, such a great atmosphere. The Palm Court Hotel has since gone and a new building is there today along the river front by Richmond Bridge. The Scenes along the river on the left from the Twickenham road bridge looking towards Richmond lock is where I use to moored my camping punt that I motorised in the early 60's so we could travel from Isleworth / Richmond to Oxford - Folly Bridge for holidays in my early teens. Happy days. I also noticed in the video that the road traffic was fairly light compared to to-day and parking was so much easier and free of charge around Richmond Green. The video certainly brought back some very happy carefree memories of my youth.

I wonder why it is, that I love all these old clips of London town, yet I have no time for the present ?.I spend much of my spare time enjoying these wonderful time capsules, and find myself short tempered with much of the mad goings on of today. Something isn't quite right, and its not me ! maybe its this modern life carry on, where every-ones face is connected to a smartphone,😄

Born at Busch Corner (WestMid!), lived on Hounslow Heath (the other side) and travelled from Twickenham to school in Hammersmith on the 667! A great film - thanks for posting. By the way, who was John Busch? Any relation to Anheuser Busch?

Love the expeditious movement along Chiswick High Road. It's practically one big cycle lane now, with hardly a cyclist in sight. The planet-savers and obesity-busters have a lot to answer for.

My neighbour of many years ago was Eddie Corrs, a steam train driver and union man, with a glint in his eye he told me of winding his steam train up to 100mph on a straight going into Oxford, it was his last trip before retirement, he was smiling so much as he said he thought the fireman had jumped off the footplate as he couldn't see him, then he looked down and there he was hanging on for dear life, Eddie got a bollocking for arriving early , Later in life he went on to sit on industrial tribunals, It filled me with sadness to attend his funeral in Stockport, they simply don't make men like that anymore. Thank you for the video its good to recall these times.

I remember the 'rang and bone' man and his horse and cart! We also had a KNIFE SHARPENER who pushed a small cart with a huge grindstone on it he could pedal to sharpen things! OH AND THE CORONA MAN!! ( no kids thats not an illness it was a FIZZY DRINK company who DELIVERED! Plus my dear parents taught me to ice skate at Richmond Ice Rink (which some hateful people demolished) I loved the 60's - a gentler kinder world when people didnt try to throw acid into your face or stab you JUST for being English! True 'salad days' if I had a time machine I would go back to a time the world hadnt gone insane trying to kill each other OR THE PLANET??

It's criminal what happened to the ice rink. They even had the gall to put sentimental information boards up describing what they destroyed.

Awesome travels. It was raining the day I rode this, and the fireman fell out of the locomotive. We eventually picked him up on the return trip. Some farm hands did his job while he was on the side of the tracks with 2 broken legs. The company fired him, for dereliction of duty while intoxicated.

Thank you for giving us the chance to watch your lovely video. In 1965 I was an intensely unhappy 12-year-old living in Putney Heath, not far away. The video does not touch the explicit and implicit racism and the generally suppressive characteristics of the higher-ups for those they viewed as beneath them. For me, this video is a fantasy, not the reality :)

Great to see this. My parents had the White Swan pub from the late 50's until my dad left the pub @ 1982. I spent the 1st 13 years of my life there before moving to Sussex. I liked it then but wouldn't move back even if I could afford it.

I agree with those of you who say steam engines should have been retained as a working museum. I emigrated to Canada in Feb 1958. My father worked for the I.o.W. railway company as a carpenter. His name was Roy Taylor & he was well known by a great many people. Americans would give their eye-teeth to have such a self contained steam museum, including the old paddle steamers. They would have banned cars from the mainland so that the public rail services & bus services would be in great demand. Furthermore, they should have never allowed the Vectis bus company to buy up all the different privately owned tour coach companies. The island was the ‘poor man’s’ holiday abroad. It could still be a great place for vacations if only there were great attractions & the steam trains would have been a strong attraction for many. Not all improvements are beneficial, sometimes ‘old’ is better especially if it brings back memories for so many people.

I recall, on a 'special' in 1962, going under the Chiswick Flyover, Mr.J H Price shewing somebody the small aluminium slots just at the top of the stairs. In all my trips on trolleys, I had never noticed them. It enabled a conductor to test a bad coin by twisting it in the relevant slot. It was a hangover from tramway days.

Complete loco’s could be shipped at this time (a lot were shipped in WW1 and WW2) so I’m guessing it was shipped in pieces because the engine had just had a major rebuild, to ensure perfect running in America and Canada. My theory is that because it was already in pieces, they decided to ship it like that for ease of handling and/or time constraints, and assemble it in America.
