I help you to learn pattern cutting, from beginner steps to advanced masterclasses.
I started this channel to demystify the process of pattern cutting and to really help you move forward so you feel confident and knowledgable in taking on any garment design project and seeing it through from flat pattern to production.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my videos!
Such an amazing tutorial! I was on the hunt for a patterning tutorial to make a shawl collar with a “quirkier” shape and this tutorial is not only super close to my own design but it’s also very easy to understand!! Thank you so much! Hope you never stop making such amazing patterning tutorials :)
Charlotta I loved seeing your process for drafting the pattern. I think it will be a great zero waste pattern with the right pattern placement. On your blouse did they use a pre purchased embroidered trim for the neck edges or was the embroidery added after the blouse was constructed?
Hi Natalia, thanks! I think it’s done by piece work. The neck facings look like they’re embroidered separately, but the embroidery connecting the pieces has to be done during the final construction
Many thanks, it is really interesting! I want to take for the panel a medium weight darkblue cotton and for the other pieces a lightweight cotton with flowers. I don't have enough fabric of this but I will find a solution for that. I am looking forward the next video.
Hello, no worries, it goes quite fast. That’s for the bodice width. So take your bust measurement and add about 10cm minimum per front/back of you don’t want the full double width
Based on Micarah Towers's channel engagement statistics, if you put a young atractive girl in the video, more so than the detailerd practical instructions, your user engagement can grow to 500 user comments, 2k upvote and maybe even get a house as a gift.
😂 sorry, that might be my fault! I guess there are only a finite amount of them. Normally really cheap, but sometimes too many people googling will push the price up. Hopefully in a a few weeks it won’t be £673 anymore!
On the first one, the bust triangle would have to be cut longer to the crotch and 2nd triangle would have to wrap around like a diaper, not good or in anyway attractive
Fascinating video. I am with you Charlotta, flat pattern cutting is easier in the long run. I once tried to make a topper from a magazine that was a large circle with a turn back collar. They had slits for the armholes. I have learnt that armholes are not slits or circles. When I see patterns like that I stay away. It is interesting that all these patterns only had illustrations and not photos of actual garments. The third wrap over top was just mind boggling, like a straight jacket, instead I would use a dolman sleeve block to create it. I love the dress you made and a top version has been on my bucket list for a while.
Sounds like you've learnt from experience! I actually had a blanket style coat with slits for armholes, but it only worked because it was a super loose knit and oversized style! Otherwise it's a no-no! I always get intrigued by the geometric shapes, it's a style of pattern cutting I've loved since discovering Vionnet, but yes no photos is a red flag! Thanks! I've put the full drafting tutorial for the top with the dart adaption in the description now
@@charlotta_patterncuttingschool I must go to my Vionnet book and study how she has used geometry and see if the patterns really work. Have you made any designs from the Betty Kirke book?
Does the amount of ease depends on the size of the individual? Say for the individual of size M I would add 2cm of ease for cotton fabric. And what about size 3XL? How much ease should I add there?
Hello, yes, you can increase the ease slightly in line with the size of the sleeve. If you're grading, the ease will automatically increase in line with the pattern piece
Charlotta I have the Australian edition of the Hilary Campbell book from 1986. I think the back trouser block shape of the crotch is far better than the one in the Ann Tuit, and I prefer the more straight forward instructions in it. I didn't realise it had become so costly. I love the top you are wearing in the video, the embroidery is gorgeous
Is that in cm too? Yes, the concise instructions are among the best I’ve come across. It’s funny how we can tell whether a block is going to be any good just by looking at the diagram! Thank you, it’s a 1905s(?) Mexican blouse and completely made up from squares. The quality of the fabric and embroidery makes it perfect for summer and amazingly the colour doesn’t bleed!
Thank you for your video. I am making my own patterns since some years ago, it was a long journey!!I like the book of Aldrich more and more, because it is so precise and short. I got overwhelmed in the beginning: how much ease I should take for a blouse, a jacket? Where? How do I have to change the sleeve? In what order should I make the corrections??? Why is there a yoke in most blouses? Why is the shoulder slope different on the front and back??? Many questions that took much time to find the answers to. A course should have helped me much. Charlotta, I like your channel very much, it gives me much inspiration, thank you! Greetings from Sweden
Hi Heike, it’s definitely a long journey, I’m still learning! I think the questions you had are so difficult because often there are no clear answers, so we have to figure it out ourselves!
