My Great Great Grandfather, John Bell was born in Clones, County Monaghan in 1841, which was Ulster then and I have been sad that County Monaghan is now in the Republic because there were probably one hundred or so more Catholics there than Protestants at the time. We were Church of Ireland, but it makes me sad that some original Counties of Ulster are no longer a part of the land of their ancestors. I have been to Clones, lovely area and literally on the border.
I am from Lancaster, Pennsylvania which was basically founded by a James Hamilton who was a great friend of William Penn. Hamilton was a very well educated wealthy gentleman. Also, President James Buchanan lived and died here in Lancaster and worshipped at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, built 1732, where I was baptized. My maiden name is Bell.
My maiden name is Bell and I am certain that my ancestors were Border Reivers. When King James literally chased some Reivers out or lose their heads, went to Ulster and some of them went to Renfrewshire. My Great Great Grandfather was born in Clones, County Monaghan in 1841, he was Protestant, baptized in the Church of Ireland and when he was about twelve years old the family moved to Paisley to be near other family members. He emigrated from Paisley to Philadelphia in 1859 and eventually settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but commuted by train to Philadelphia for work, as he was a tailor by trade and the work was better in Philadelphia at that time. There are no Church records in Ireland of his parent's marriage, their names were James and Sallie Bell, per my GG Grandfather's baptismal church record. Also, there are no death records for his parent's at the Church of Ireland in Clones, therefore I believe they all returned to Scotland and James and Sallie may have died there. They may have even married in Scotland because there is no marriage records at the Church in Clones and it would appear that my GG Grandfather may have been an only child or only surviving child as no other baptismal records in the Church show for James and Sallie of Pound Hill in Clones. Here in Lancaster we were all baptized Presbyterian. I know most of this because in the Summer as a girl I would spend a week or so with my Grandfather's older Sister and she related to me what her Paternal Grandmother, John Bell's wife told her about her late Grandfather's life. I would ask my Great Aunt Miriam questions about our family and she was always glad to provide information that had been passed to her, but every time I asked my Grandfather, her Brother what he knew his standard answer was always " I don't want to talk about it because our ancestors were horse thieves and murderers". HMMM! So I surmise that if you come from Border Reivers and King James I makes your family an offer you can't refuse you pack up and leave with your heads and move to Ireland and or Paisley.😎

@@brucecollins4729 You are partly right but largely wrong. The Cruthen/Picts were the original natives of Ulster. Gaels are Celts from Ireland so the idea of Gaels from Scotland entering following the Cruthen/Picts is pure nonsense. In fact the annals of Ulster tell us that the Gael invaders rose in power in Ireland and forced the native Ulster Cruthen/Picts ever eastwards, eventually establishing the kingdom on Dalriada on both sides of the narrow water between Ulster and Scotland about 500 ad. By 800 ad the Dalriadans and Picts merged under the Dalriadian king Kenneth MacAlpin to make the new kingdom of Alba which became Scotland. The Gaels of Scotland are actually Cruthen if you look at the genealogy records. Borne out by the fact that Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic are different languages.
