I was on that understanding that “the unwritten law” to a classic salmon fly, it`s Best to use a standard thread, and not a GSP thread ? But correct me if im wrong.. I do use gsp tread mostly, due to the thin making and the minimal risk of breaking the thread when tying... The reason... natural materials do sit better with a normal thread you wax yourselves..?
Good tutorials, but sorry your underbody is all wrong - it should be a weight forward cigar shape - not thinner at the head than the butt (you don't have to take my word for it - just read Kelson Hale etc) Uni is actually a really bad floss choice as most of it is multi-strand and twisted, secondly it's much better tie the hackle tip in with the floss itself on the return towards the head - hold it with a weighted bobbin holder and then slide the hackle tip under it before completing the body - this prevents the lumpy ti-ein area you have here. Dx
Thanks for showing Exactly how to tie the wing on. I have made several married wings successfully, but the tying on of the wing always left me frustrated. I will, of course continue to try. Thanks for sharing. All the best to you, Sean
Fantastic Idea, I have not given salmon flies a try yet. I tie fishing flies but these come out so beautiful I would just want to collect them. Such beauty I need to see the fish will take something very much less beautiful. All the best to you, Sean
