I wish I knew. I actually thought the same thing. I looked everywhere for SS 102-108" to 204-216" tapering whips. I wanted to experiment with them. ALAS, no luck. 😪
@@GiantSequoiaNation CRISPR + AI scares me and makes me excited for what the future holds. We have started to implement AI at our hospital already... We have a genetic counselor... times are rapidly changing. Thanks for your videos. Aloha
Holy crap! That's awesome! Yes I was a huge proponent, and tried to cold call 200 doctors with Pharmacogenomics like 10 years ago. No one was interested in the slightest... I guess times have changed. And dude, I didnt know you were in HI!? And I have so many other questions! Will have to hit you on the side. And I'm so thankful for your contibed support for my videos brother!!
Wait a second, the 11 meter "CB" band is 26.965Mhz - 27.405Mhz. According to what your VNA was showing us, your best SWR was WAY above 27.405 somewhere up around the 10 meter band. Specifically, channel 33 is 27.335Mhz so the antenna could definitely be a little longer. BUT it's still pretty good the way it is. However, i noticed your antenna light coming on intermittently while you transmitted. Most folks would say you shouldn't trust it and get an external meter. Which you have. But, in your case, if you are using an amp like i think you are, i'd have my output tune checked in case you're getting high reflect coming back from the amp.
Yes, I. Glad you noticed. I cut it a bit short for my additional tuning cap with the bolt on it. That should allow plenty of height to hit that resonant ch33. And yes the linear is over 20 years old and I'm sure that reflect is a real thing. I suppose it's time to have that one sent in as well. Trying to keep these buggers going for as many years as I can. I appreciate the feedback as well. 73
@@GiantSequoiaNation Oh yea, i completely forgot you mentioned a tuning cap in the video. I should have just assumed you'd use it at some point and kept my mouth shut :)
@KaylansDrone Nah man, it's all good. I could have put it on there at the end but it was working great without it so I just forgot. I don't mind the critique at all. I took down my base station so I won't be able to do my comparison video I wanted to do with a 102 vs that copper antenna. Once I get the base back up I'm gonna make my wife hang here while I hit up a local mountain about 20 miles as the crow flies and see which talks and hears better.
Another great video dude! What color caulk do you prefer? I like black as where I am from i can get it in larger sizes. Unless i need some inside. then its white caulk. Bought my first handheld baofeng. one day I'll build something beefy to reach you and we can rock out with our ham out. Dont forget to add your patreon link in your do-diddle below.
Bahahhahaha my man! Caulk isn't for everyone, but I heard you can mash the two colors together and make a caulk sandwich! Nice! Welcome to the radio club, brother! If we could hit eachother through the airwaves I'd freak! Ham on, Ham on, Ham on whole wheat, alright! I did forget that Patreon link! I'll add now! You da man!
@@GiantSequoiaNation Oh yeah ,, nothing like being in the attic in the south in July !! That’s why I’m putting back some bones to have a light colored metal roof put on with a true vented ridge cap . Right now , you can put your hand on the sheetrock, about 7 feet up on the hallway walls and it feels like an oven
@Dallas-Rife-UDX-347-Tennessee have mercy! I feel ya brother. I'm getting an attic fan too after that. I might need to tighten a notch on my belt too after all that sweat I lost. Lol
Late morning coffee and GSQ antenna shenanigans,, can’t think of a better morning getting a later start than wanted to my day Sometimes sleeping in until 8:30 am just feels right
This is 100% how I’ve leaned what I know with the hobby I’m passionate about . Radio . I’m still learning all the time . Had a major issue yesterday , I did troubleshooting for 2 hours , completely clueless and stuck Spent $277 bucks on a new part I thought was bad . Installed it ,, same issue . Made one phone call to 307 Amps in Wyoming , in 2 minutes he pinpointed the problem , it was a badly designed 3 dollar connector that screws into the side of the line section that reads the RF at the slug , not the $277 dollar dual line section , he walked me through how to repair it like new , and I was off to the DX races . I learned something way more valuable than $277 dollars if It ever happens again or help someone else . That’s one small example
That's awesome, man. Everyone here has helped me in one way or another. Some taught me even when they were being an you-know-what. Us guiding each other and helping each other are what make the radio hobby so special. Best of all, sometimes you meet some really unique and cool peeps that truly go out of the way to help people. And Dallas Rife, you're one of those cool peeps. You are keeping the hobby alive.
That’s how it starts ,, before you know it , you’re wedged in you basement like a hermit , with a bench full of test and repair equipment, radios for repair stacked all around you , the phone never stops ringing , your wife cringes and has ptsd moments every time she sees a cb antenna , and you’re being bashed on Facebook 4 days later by the same people who bragged on you when they got their radio back on day 1 through 3 because it went to the magic smoke show , because they’re running it into an amp with no reflect meters , a 1.7 SWR without the amp on , ,, yep ,, you’re on your way my friend 🤣🤣🤣,, but all joking aside ,, good job . Always nice to be able to do the basic things and learn something , and save a few bucks 73’s
Nice build, congrats, it works great. But to judge from the readings of the Nano VNA, your antenna is actually a little bit too short, because the best resonant points are in the 10m Ham- band.
Thank you for your suggestion. I talk on ch 33 which is where I kept the lowest SWR. It sacrifices the lower channels unfortunately bc of the high Q. Another listener suggested a type of capacitance hat, which would widen the Q and bring down the SWRs in the lower channels. Idk we will see. Thanks again for watching and giving me feedback! 73
That's awesome I got a Midland 75-822 hooked up to a wilson 1000 that's mounted on an old freezer on my balcony its pumping out 4 watts I can reach the truck stop that is about 10 miles to the northeast of me
I added a 6 inch solid riser to my 102" whip. Most installations utilize a 6 inch heavy duty spring. I am not familiar with just how much additional length that your very cool puck set up adds... Your Nano VNA should help you determine if you need any more length to bring it closer to resonance.... Your SWRs are pretty good but what are your other numbers? ie reactance and impedance?
That's a great question. And I have no idea the R and I... I've never tried it. I believe you gave me another idea for the next video! Lol. I do have a 10-inch solid aluminum riser as well I used for a different setup that got me where I needed to be. But it definitely doesn't work here. My puck set adds 5inches from the black base. I also used a one inch additional riser to total 108" from the black base, but it didn't make the SWR happy. I had to take it back off. Maybe the black base already adds another inch. Idk. Again, I really appreciate the thoughts, and I will make a video addressing this and mention you for the thanks!
You still had resistance and a bad ground at the 10.00 minute mark. It should have read "0.00" ohms for a perfect connection. Am I the only one that picked that up?
On the roof rack to engine ground? It should read 0.00 ohms for a perfect ground? Ohms are resistance, right? If there was no resistance.... hmmmm. You lost me.
Yeah I've had several videos after this video. I think that was my very first. I have had different SWRs the smaller jumpers from the box to the radio but my setup won't allow.
Bc the radio I like 18 years old and it's a bit finicky. I've used a president walker 2 with this antenna and Coax setup and the SWR was the same obviously. That light is an SWR warning light. That's why I've been testing with a Nano VNA after many user suggestions. The radio just isn't that accurate anymore.
@@GiantSequoiaNation Thank you for that. My Cobra 29 was doing the same thing so I decided to buy the President George FCC. Now you got me interested in the DIY Antenna.
@Tom-xp7dl Anytime brother. Listen I never thought I would be either but the user's are already giving me suggestions for my build too. I'm going to put a copper capacitance hat to flatten the SWR plot/curve. Yeah, the old Cobra 29 has been very food to me but I have looked at the President George FCC and the soon to be released 10, "11" and 12m President Washington with 80 watts! But thats gonna be really expensive. How dobyou like the George so far?? And if you do build an antenna, make a video and post it. Send it my way. I think we need more of us on here to grow the community!
I would be hard pressed to ground better than I have short of drilling through the roof. Watch my grounding and bonding video. If there something I missed. Please let me know.
