There must have been a "backroom deal" with the God Damned Soviets. We had Aircraft Carriers in the immediate vicinity. We could have EASILY decimated them.
The Khmer Rouge severed their relationship with the Soviets by this time. The US supported the Khmer Rouge in the UN along with the UK in the 80s and supplied the Khmer Rouge with weapons to fight Vietnam. The Soviets and Vietmanese ended up being even more anti khmer rouge. Literally we could have let the Khmer Rouge die out by 1979 if we didn't decide to help them out.
