I was going to buy the 1.4... im so glad i watched your review. Everytime you switched back to the 1.2 I just went "ugh...it's not the same" I will be getting the 1.2 😅
It would very helpful if we could set the beginning focus point and the end focus point in the stacking process. Then, the camera would decide the necessary steps required to be able to get the whole area in focus.
It's crazy how much they look like ants and yet they look different from each other. We have four different species of ant mimic Jumping Spiders here and a couple of other ant mimic non-Jumping Spiders and all of them look completely different because they're all mimicking different ants! It's wild. 🐜
Very glad that someone is talking about Minimum focus distance on non-macro lenses! Very often I’ve avoided lenses that others claim are spectacular because the max reproduction is only 0.12x!
That feature is so awesome. I recently tried it out when I rented the camera for the weekend. At first I couldn't tell if it was working, the changes between each picture is so small. I also put the camera into silent mode, or whatever the mode that keeps the shutter open. I figure less wear on the shutter. I did take 10,000 photos that weekend of testing. I fell in love with that camera. I now must have it. its a huge leap forward from the A900 and the A7Sii that I mostly use for video.
I was trying out my Sony A7RV with the 70-200 mm G F/4 OSS II lens to give macro photography a try to see if I really enjoy this genre before I make any investments in more macro gears.. I tried focus bracketing and set it as 2 with maximum shots at 70 and the camera keeps shooting till it reaches the maximum 70 shots. I was expecting it to stop shooting before it reaches 70 shots as it would have captured enough focussed images for focus stacking. I also tried testing it by setting it to 3 and then to 4, and also on both occasions, the camera also took up to 70 shots which I knew that for my just a flower image, the shots taken by the camera were far more than were required for focus stacking. Can you please how to resolve this issue? Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Many thanks!
It's designed to either go to the number of shots you set, or to infinity, whichever it reaches first. Since the depth of field gets narrower the closer you get to your subject and you're using a telephoto lens, it's definitely going to reach 70 images before it reaches infinity focus.
To me it seems like the 1.2 has a fairly intense vignette that the 1.4 doesn’t, have you noticed this while shooting and how well does it correct in post?
If you're seeing one it's because I added it in post. I Have a preset with a vignette and may have forgotten to turn it off. It does not have a lens vignette normally.
Thank you very much for the comparison, exactly this is what I was looking for. The F1.4 is perfect, and almost only half the price. I used to have an F1.2 lenes, and I don't remember I've ever used it at F1.2, since at F1.2 the DoF is so thin that extremelly few situations tolerate it.
I was interested in the recently reduced S Pro 50mm, but this lens is so light and bright that it's very compelling. However, in Australia it's not yet available in L-mount, and the E-mount is almost three times the price of the 1.4. It may just be bad timing in terms of currency exchange rates. Thanks! Subscribed!
Really like your take on these two lenses. There are others that argue that the aperture between 1.2 and 1.4 is minimal. You showed that the focusing distance is part of the equation that few speak about.
I was dead set on keep my OG version till I saw your focus test. TBH, I'm not sure it really makes that much of a difference for my portrait work. I've started investing in the little I-Series lenses for my A7Cii. You should do some reviews on them ;)
The I-series is so fun!!! to be honest, I'm also unsure if it will make that much of a difference for my portrait work, but I will probably replace my OG version with the new one because toddlers are fast.
@@heatherlarkin yes , i know, i've seen that and i hope that really works. I always want an 24 70 2.8 lens and those "dusty" reviews keeps me away from Sigma. I use Tamron 28 75, the 1st one , but those 4mm at widest is something that i really want.. So, Sony 24 70 is to expensive, (i have an a7iv), Samyang 24 70 just NO, and i wait if Sigma talk the talk and walk the walk !
Thanks for the demonstration. This is better than every review I've seen where all they do is talk about it. You actually show us. Convinced me to get it.
Wow, as happy user of 1st gen I did not expect AF to be SO QUICK. Thank tou for head to head comparison. I have something to think about :) concerning upgrade.
Some times the 1.2 looks better other images being at 1.4 looks better. I think sometimes seeing more in focus does look better with some images and other images more bokeh looks better. You look like Mary Jane from Spider-Man.😂
@@heatherlarkin When I watched this video on my phone I liked the last photo with f1.4. But when I watched it again on my laptop I liked the f1.2 better. Also I was using web browser so I holding the phone vertical. So the screen was very small. I think that's why I liked third photo at f1.4 and the last photo at f1.4 on my phone but again f1.2 looks a lot better on my laptop. Kind of weird. LOL
I really enjoyed your video- thanks! But beyond enjoyment; it also settled my quest for my next portrait lens: I've been considering the Sigma DG DN 85mm f1.4 and the Zeiss Batis; but you've given me the extra "push" to get this one. My heart also lies with the 50's. I started off as a student, with a Pentax ES II and a Takumar SMC 50mm f1.4 and that has established the way I approach compositions. I'm a total nerd when it comes to shooting flowers, close up and creating "impressionist" bokeh and this lens will enable me to shoot much more than just portraits with it.
That 85mm 1.4 is my other clear favorite lens, but there's just SOMETHING about this new 50 that makes my heart love it more. Maybe I'll feel differently if Sigma ever makes an 85mm 1.2?
@@heatherlarkin Yes- that would be magical! I've switched to Sony a few years ago; but I still keep my Nikon D850 and its 105mm f1.4 lens. That lens has pixie dust! I imagine a good 85mm f1.2 would do the same.. Anyway, I share your passion for macro photography too!
I’ve always found Sigma lenses to give the best bokeh. I certainly love Sony GM lenses for their clinical look, but Sigma has a certain look that I prefer.
@@heatherlarkin I know. Rumored that sigma will come out w the RF one.. that’s why I’m holding off on getting one.. plus sigma is half the price and as good as the rf..
I have the 24 and 85 1.4. I thought they would fit the need for family photos indoors but I run out of space with the 85 indoors and don’t like the distortion with the 24. I use the 30 1.4 (45 ff eq) on my crop bodies the most often. Maybe I’ll pick up the 50 1.2 to try.
