Tim Mentzel of Rotor plays ( this alongside a Goldtop Les Paul with their logo on the body ). Various videos of him using it. They play instrumental stoner rock. <3 Love this guitar
I wonder how the guys in the 60s would have judged this? You’re literally comparing tones to the Fender Strat and Tele and Gibson Les Paul all in 1 guitar. It’s wonderful. Just like the other ones I mentioned.
I had one just like that once...I bought mine a few months after Hanz bought his...along with a 1969 Marshall 50W plexi head and a non-Marshall cabinet - all S/H, from Zenith Music in Claremont, Perth. I loved it, but I needed money a year or so later, and to my eternal regret, I sold it. I should have taken out a small loan, but I was a very long way from home. I still have the Marshall. Now whenever I play one of the riffs I wrote on that guitar, I feel regret. I have a number of really nice guitars, but they don't quite get the same mellow sound - you can come close, but it's not quite the same. There's also a feeling in the wood - the LPR was built to the highest standards Gibson had at the time.
Great show! Enjoy. And welcome to Tom Ellis obsession world. Our other channel has more Tom Ellis content: LipRoll. We also have a documentary on this channel as well!
I bought one of those new in 1973. They are a really good guitar, and I used one for many gigs- it had more of a single coil vibe in the tone and as a result it could cover a lot of genres- I used to use a EHX Power booster/ Line driver and no other pedals into a Marshall 50w combo with the volume maxed out and used the guitar volume to control things from clean to dirty- what a sound! I eventually sold it later in the '70s to get a custom build. They had a little transformer inside to go from Lo Z for mixing consoles, to High Z for amp inputs.
Dan is so great. Love this dude, the way he thinks, and the way he explains so many recording techniques online. He's a bright shining light in our little drumming community!
I have that very same model. Bought mine in May 1972. Sam Ash, Long Island. The difference is I have a more standard bridge saddle, not that harmonica style bridge, and the tuners are Grover, not Schaller.
Funny that you used the Wild West descripton for all of the tech stats on the guitar, Wild West used to be located in Riverside and that's where I bought the guitar. 🙂
This is one of those tracks where we didn’t realize until after we posted that it is a super popular amongst the synth community. I grew up on more guitar based rock and for Mary she grew up with 70’s folk and pop. The one thing I can always count on with Mothership Gear is that I learn something new everyday either from the guest, the manual, or the audience, and honestly that’s what keeps it fun. Thanks for watching! - Spencer
Great video! I am getting my first jazzmaster delivered tomorrow! I am really exited so I’m binging a bunch of fender related vids and this is a really fun one
I have one of these guitars still stock original and can't get with the odd neck profile. Feels like a broomstick that sets off the body in a weird way.
This sounds exactly like the Dom-church in Cologne. That is a building a mile high, a mile wide and 5 miles long. And packed with curved arched roofs and stone colums that echo to 72 directions. What went wrong with the reverb spring units inside the amp? Or does this guitar do its own reverb?!
Thanks Spencerfor having me over once again. Always a fun time talking about my super wacky collection of guitars!! This one originally was called "The Brick" because the orange color finish reminded me and all my band mates about bricks that people use for building houses 🙂
@jamesholland5166 over the time I've had the guitar I've used lots of different things, I have a couple Divided by 13 amps with pedals in the front and the guitar works great with that set up. When we recorded this video I was using my current main set up which is a Fractal FM9 Turbo with a dual amp set up, Morgan AC-20 model and a Mesa Boogie Lonestar model. There's a comperessor, boost and trem in front of the amps and then stereo delay into stereo verb(s) which is pretty much all I used for this. Fun set up
The last two records were with Kevin Leon. Pretty sure Kevin’s on: Angels in Science, and The Alien Coast. He talks about the recording process on the full episode. - Spencer
