The Conversion of Saul 9 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing out threats[a] to murder[b] the Lord’s disciples, went to the high priest 2 and requested letters from him to the synagogues[c] in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way,[d] either men or women, he could bring them as prisoners[e] to Jerusalem.[f] 3 As he was going along, approaching[g] Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed[h] around him. 4 He[i] fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul,[j] why are you persecuting me?”[k] 5 So he said, “Who are you, Lord?” He replied, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting! 6 But stand up[l] and enter the city and you will be told[m] what you must do.” 7 (Now the men[n] who were traveling with him stood there speechless,[o] because they heard the voice but saw no one.)[p] 8 So Saul got up from the ground, but although his eyes were open,[q] he could see nothing.[r] Leading him by the hand, his companions[s] brought him into Damascus. 9 For[t] three days he could not see, and he neither ate nor drank anything.[u] 10 Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The[v] Lord[w] said to him in a vision, “Ananias,” and he replied, “Here I am,[x] Lord.” 11 Then the Lord told him, “Get up and go to the street called ‘Straight,’[y] and at Judas’ house look for a man from Tarsus named Saul. For he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision[z] a man named Ananias come in and place his hands on him so that he may see again.” 13 But Ananias replied,[aa] “Lord, I have heard from many people[ab] about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, 14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison[ac] all who call on your name!”[ad] 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, because this man is my chosen instrument[ae] to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the people of Israel.[af] 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”[ag] 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, placed[ah] his hands on Saul[ai] and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here,[aj] has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”[ak] 18 Immediately[al] something like scales[am] fell from his eyes, and he could see again. He[an] got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, his strength returned. For several days[ao] he was with the disciples in Damascus, 20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues,[ap] saying, “This man is the Son of God.”[aq] 21 All[ar] who heard him were amazed and were saying, “Is this not[as] the man who in Jerusalem was ravaging[at] those who call on this name, and who had come here to bring them as prisoners[au] to the chief priests?” 22 But Saul became more and more capable,[av] and was causing consternation[aw] among the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving[ax] that Jesus[ay] is the Christ.[az] Saul’s Escape from Damascus 23 Now after some days had passed, the Jews plotted[ba] together to kill him, 24 but Saul learned of their plot against him.[bb] They were also watching[bc] the city gates[bd] day and night so that they could kill him. 25 But his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening[be] in the wall by lowering him in a basket.[bf] Saul Returns to Jerusalem 26 When he arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to associate[bg] with the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, because they did not believe[bh] that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took[bi] Saul,[bj] brought[bk] him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, that[bl] the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly[bm] in the name of Jesus. 28 So he was staying with them, associating openly with them[bn] in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He was speaking and debating[bo] with the Greek-speaking Jews,[bp] but they were trying to kill him. 30 When the brothers found out about this, they brought him down to Caesarea[bq] and sent him away to Tarsus. 31 Then[br] the church throughout Judea, Galilee,[bs] and Samaria experienced[bt] peace and thus was strengthened.[bu] Living[bv] in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, the church[bw] increased in numbers. Peter Heals Aeneas 32 Now[bx] as Peter was traveling around from place to place,[by] he also came down to the saints who lived in Lydda.[bz] 33 He found there a man named Aeneas who had been confined to a mattress for eight years because[ca] he was paralyzed. 34 Peter[cb] said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ[cc] heals you. Get up and make your own bed!”[cd] And immediately he got up. 35 All[ce] those who lived in Lydda[cf] and Sharon[cg] saw him, and they[ch] turned[ci] to the Lord. Peter Raises Dorcas 36 Now in Joppa[cj] there was a disciple named Tabitha (which in translation means[ck] Dorcas).[cl] She was continually doing good deeds and acts of charity.[cm] 37 At that time[cn] she became sick[co] and died. When they had washed[cp] her body,[cq] they placed it in an upstairs room. 38 Because Lydda[cr] was near Joppa, when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Come to us without delay.”[cs] 39 So Peter got up and went with them, and[ct] when he arrived[cu] they brought him to the upper room. All[cv] the widows stood beside him, crying and showing him[cw] the tunics[cx] and other clothing[cy] Dorcas used to make[cz] while she was with them. 40 But Peter sent them all outside,[da] knelt down,[db] and prayed. Turning[dc] to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.[dd] 41 He gave[de] her his hand and helped her get up. Then he called[df] the saints and widows and presented her alive. 42 This became known throughout all[dg] Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.[dh] 43 So[di] Peter[dj] stayed many days in Joppa with a man named[dk] Simon, a tanner.[dl]
And Saul agreed completely with killing[a] him. Saul Begins to Persecute the Church Now on that day a great[b] persecution began[c] against the church in Jerusalem, and all[d] except the apostles were forced to scatter throughout the regions[e] of Judea and Samaria. 2 Some[f] devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation[g] over him.[h] 3 But Saul was trying to destroy[i] the church; entering one house after another, he dragged off[j] both men and women and put them in prison.[k] Philip Preaches in Samaria 4 Now those who had been forced to scatter went around proclaiming the good news of the word. 5 Philip went down to the main city of Samaria[l] and began proclaiming[m] the Christ[n] to them. 6 The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what Philip said,[o] as they heard and saw the miraculous signs[p] he was performing. 7 For unclean spirits,[q] crying with loud shrieks, were coming out of many who were possessed,[r] and many paralyzed and lame people were healed. 8 So there was[s] great joy[t] in that city. 9 Now in that city was a man named Simon, who had been practicing magic[u] and amazing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. 10 All the people,[v] from the least to the greatest, paid close attention to him, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called ‘Great.’”[w] 11 And they paid close attention to him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God[x] and the name of Jesus Christ,[y] they began to be baptized,[z] both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after he was baptized, he stayed close to[aa] Philip constantly, and when he saw the signs and great miracles that were occurring, he was amazed.[ab] 14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word[ac] of God, they sent[ad] Peter and John to them. 15 These two[ae] went down and prayed for them so that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For the Spirit[af] had not yet come upon[ag] any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)[ah] 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on the Samaritans,[ai] and they received the Holy Spirit.[aj] 18 Now Simon, when he saw that the Spirit[ak] was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power[al] too, so that everyone I place my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you,[am] because you thought you could acquire[an] God’s gift with money! 21 You have no share or part[ao] in this matter[ap] because your heart is not right before God! 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord[aq] that he may perhaps forgive you for the intent of your heart.[ar] 23 For I see that you are bitterly envious[as] and in bondage to sin.” 24 But Simon replied,[at] “You pray to the Lord for me so that nothing of what you have said may happen to[au] me.” 25 So after Peter and John[av] had solemnly testified[aw] and spoken the word of the Lord,[ax] they started back to Jerusalem, proclaiming[ay] the good news to many Samaritan villages[az] as they went.[ba] Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch 26 Then an angel of the Lord[bb] said to Philip,[bc] “Get up and go south[bd] on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert[be] road.)[bf] 27 So[bg] he got up[bh] and went. There[bi] he met[bj] an Ethiopian eunuch,[bk] a court official of Candace,[bl] queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasury. He[bm] had come to Jerusalem to worship,[bn] 28 and was returning home, sitting[bo] in his chariot, reading[bp] the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran up[bq] to it[br] and heard the man[bs] reading the prophet Isaiah. He[bt] asked him,[bu] “Do you understand what you’re reading?” 31 The man[bv] replied, “How in the world can I,[bw] unless someone guides me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of scripture the man[bx] was reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did[by] not open his mouth. 33 In humiliation[bz] justice was taken from him.[ca] Who can describe his posterity?[cb] For his life was taken away[cc] from the earth.”[cd] 34 Then the eunuch said[ce] to Philip, “Please tell me,[cf] who is the prophet saying this about-himself or someone else?”[cg] 35 So Philip started speaking,[ch] and beginning with this scripture[ci] proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him. 36 Now as they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, there is water! What is to stop me[cj] from being baptized?”[ck] 38 So he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water,[cl] and Philip baptized[cm] him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him any more, but[cn] went on his way rejoicing.[co] 40 Philip, however, found himself[cp] at Azotus,[cq] and as he passed through the area,[cr] he proclaimed the good news[cs] to all the towns[ct] until he came to Caesarea.[cu]
Stephen’s Defense Before the Council 7 Then the high priest said, “Are these things true?”[a] 2 So he replied,[b] “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. The God of glory appeared to our forefather[c] Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Go out from your country and from your relatives, and come to the land I will show you.’[d] 4 Then he went out from the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God[e] made him move[f] to this country where you now live. 5 He[g] did not give any of it to him for an inheritance,[h] not even a foot of ground,[i] yet God[j] promised to give it to him as his possession, and to his descendants after him,[k] even though Abraham[l] as yet had no child. 6 But God spoke as follows: ‘Your[m] descendants will be foreigners[n] in a foreign country, whose citizens will enslave them and mistreat them for 400 years.[o] 7 But I will punish[p] the nation they serve as slaves,’ said God, ‘and after these things they will come out of there[q] and worship[r] me in this place.’[s] 8 Then God[t] gave Abraham[u] the covenant[v] of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old,[w] and Isaac became the father of[x] Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.[y] 9 The[z] patriarchs, because they were jealous of Joseph, sold[aa] him into Egypt. But[ab] God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his troubles, and granted him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made[ac] him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Then a famine occurred throughout[ad] Egypt and Canaan, causing[ae] great suffering, and our[af] ancestors[ag] could not find food. 12 So when Jacob heard that there was grain[ah] in Egypt, he sent our ancestors[ai] there[aj] the first time. 13 On their second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers again, and Joseph’s family[ak] became known to Pharaoh. 14 So Joseph sent a message[al] and invited[am] his father Jacob and all his relatives to come, seventy-five people[an] in all. 15 So Jacob went down to Egypt and died there,[ao] along with our ancestors,[ap] 16 and their bones[aq] were later moved to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a certain sum of money[ar] from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. 17 “But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham,[as] the people increased greatly in number[at] in Egypt, 18 until another king who did not know about[au] Joseph ruled[av] over Egypt.[aw] 19 This was the one who exploited[ax] our people[ay] and was cruel to our ancestors,[az] forcing them to abandon[ba] their infants so they would die.[bb] 20 At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful[bc] to God. For[bd] three months he was brought up in his father’s house, 21 and when he had been abandoned,[be] Pharaoh’s daughter adopted[bf] him and brought him up[bg] as her own son. 22 So Moses was trained[bh] in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful[bi] in his words and deeds. 23 But when he was about forty years old, it entered his mind[bj] to visit his fellow countrymen[bk] the Israelites.[bl] 24 When[bm] he saw one of them being hurt unfairly,[bn] Moses[bo] came to his defense[bp] and avenged the person who was mistreated by striking down the Egyptian. 25 He thought his own people[bq] would understand that God was delivering them[br] through him,[bs] but they did not understand.[bt] 26 The next day Moses[bu] saw two men[bv] fighting, and tried to make peace between[bw] them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why are you hurting one another?’ 27 But the man who was unfairly hurting his neighbor pushed[bx] Moses[by] aside, saying, ‘Who made[bz] you a ruler and judge over us? 28 You don’t want to kill me the way you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’[ca] 29 When the man said this,[cb] Moses fled and became a foreigner[cc] in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. 30 “After[cd] forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert[ce] of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush.[cf] 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and when he approached to investigate, there came the voice of the Lord, 32 ‘I am the God of your forefathers,[cg] the God of Abraham, Isaac,[ch] and Jacob.’[ci] Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely.[cj] 33 But the Lord said to him, ‘Take the sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.[ck] 34 I have certainly seen the suffering[cl] of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them.[cm] Now[cn] come, I will send you to Egypt.’[co] 35 This same[cp] Moses they had rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge?’[cq] God sent as both ruler and deliverer[cr] through the hand of the angel[cs] who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs[ct] in the land of Egypt,[cu] at[cv] the Red Sea, and in the wilderness[cw] for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,[cx] ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’[cy] 38 This is the man who was in the congregation[cz] in the wilderness[da] with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors,[db] and he[dc] received living oracles[dd] to give to you.[de] 39 Our[df] ancestors[dg] were unwilling to obey[dh] him, but pushed him aside[di] and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt[dj] -we do not know what has happened to him!’[dk] 41 At[dl] that time[dm] they made an idol in the form of a calf,[dn] brought[do] a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing[dp] in the works of their hands.[dq] 42 But God turned away from them and gave them over[dr] to worship the host[ds] of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices[dt] forty years in the wilderness, was it,[du] house of Israel? 43 But you took along the tabernacle[dv] of Moloch[dw] and the star of the[dx] god Rephan,[dy] the images you made to worship, but I will deport[dz] you beyond Babylon.’[ea] 44 Our ancestors[eb] had the tabernacle[ec] of testimony in the wilderness,[ed] just as God[ee] who spoke to Moses ordered him[ef] to make it according to the design he had seen. 45 Our[eg] ancestors[eh] received possession of it and brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors,[ei] until the time[ej] of David. 46 He[ek] found favor[el] with[em] God and asked that he could[en] find a dwelling place[eo] for the house[ep] of Jacob. 47 But Solomon built a house[eq] for him. 48 Yet the Most High[er] does not live in houses made by human hands,[es] as the prophet says, 49 ‘Heaven is my throne, and earth is the footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is my resting place?[et] 50 Did my hand[eu] not make all these things?’[ev] 51 “You stubborn[ew] people, with uncircumcised[ex] hearts and ears![ey] You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors[ez] did! 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors[fa] not persecute?[fb] They[fc] killed those who foretold long ago the coming of the Righteous One,[fd] whose betrayers and murderers you have now become![fe] 53 You[ff] received the law by decrees given by angels,[fg] but you did not obey[fh] it.” Stephen is Killed 54 When they heard these things, they became furious[fi] and ground their teeth[fj] at him. 55 But Stephen,[fk] full[fl] of the Holy Spirit, looked intently[fm] toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing[fn] at the right hand of God. 56 “Look!” he said.[fo] “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they covered their ears,[fp] shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent. 58 When[fq] they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him,[fr] and the witnesses laid their cloaks[fs] at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 They[ft] continued to stone Stephen while he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then he fell[fu] to his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!”[fv] When[fw] he had said this, he died.[fx]
пишу вам искренно ,когда Россия была завете с Андреем Шаповаловым ,мы были под кровом Иисуса Христа через вас защита огромная была,когда постара вышли из завета ,произошло очень сильная страгегия ,как будьто все прошлое вернулась,многие церкви вышли и ушли мир свое прошлое вернулись стали пить.они не поняли почему завета вышли пастора и все стало атаки на людей.не много поделилась с вами.вот такие ситуация у нас в России.но я буду искать Иисуса царя моего.и буду часть вашей церкви..

The Parable of the Clever Steward 16 Jesus[a] also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who was informed of accusations[b] that his manager[c] was wasting[d] his assets. 2 So[e] he called the manager[f] in and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you?[g] Turn in the account of your administration,[h] because you can no longer be my manager.’ 3 Then[i] the manager said to himself, ‘What should I do, since my master is taking my position[j] away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig,[k] and I’m too ashamed[l] to beg. 4 I know[m] what to do so that when I am put out of management, people will welcome me into their homes.’[n] 5 So[o] he contacted[p] his master’s debtors one by one. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 The man[q] replied, ‘100 measures[r] of olive oil.’ The manager[s] said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write fifty.’[t] 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ The second man[u] replied, ‘100 measures[v] of wheat.’ The manager[w] said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write 80.’[x] 8 The[y] master commended the dishonest[z] manager because he acted shrewdly.[aa] For the people[ab] of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their contemporaries[ac] than the people[ad] of light. 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by how you use worldly wealth,[ae] so that when it runs out you will be welcomed[af] into the eternal homes.[ag] 10 “The one who is faithful in a very little[ah] is also faithful in much, and the one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. 11 If then you haven’t been trustworthy[ai] in handling worldly wealth,[aj] who will entrust you with the true riches?[ak] 12 And if you haven’t been trustworthy[al] with someone else’s property,[am] who will give you your own[an] ? 13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate[ao] the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise[ap] the other. You cannot serve God and money.”[aq] More Warnings about the Pharisees 14 The Pharisees[ar] (who loved money) heard all this and ridiculed[as] him. 15 But[at] Jesus[au] said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in men’s eyes,[av] but God knows your hearts. For what is highly prized[aw] among men is utterly detestable[ax] in God’s sight. 16 “The law and the prophets were in force[ay] until John;[az] since then,[ba] the good news of the kingdom of God[bb] has been proclaimed, and everyone is urged to enter it.[bc] 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tiny stroke of a letter[bd] in the law to become void.[be] 18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries[bf] someone else commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. The Rich Man and Lazarus 19 “There was a rich man who dressed in purple[bg] and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously[bh] every day. 20 But at his gate lay[bi] a poor man named Lazarus[bj] whose body was covered with sores,[bk] 21 who longed to eat[bl] what fell from the rich man’s table. In addition, the dogs[bm] came and licked[bn] his sores. 22 “Now[bo] the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.[bp] The[bq] rich man also died and was buried.[br] 23 And in Hades,[bs] as he was in torment,[bt] he looked up[bu] and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.[bv] 24 So[bw] he called out,[bx] ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus[by] to dip the tip of his finger[bz] in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish[ca] in this fire.’[cb] 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child,[cc] remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.[cd] 26 Besides all this,[ce] a great chasm[cf] has been fixed between us,[cg] so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ 27 So[ch] the rich man[ci] said, ‘Then I beg you, father-send Lazarus[cj] to my father’s house 28 (for I have five brothers) to warn[ck] them so that they don’t come[cl] into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said,[cm] ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to[cn] them.’ 30 Then[co] the rich man[cp] said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead[cq] goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 He[cr] replied to him, ‘If they do not respond to[cs] Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”[ct

The Ministry of John the Baptist 3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,[a] when Pontius Pilate[b] was governor of Judea, and Herod[c] was tetrarch[d] of Galilee, and his brother Philip[e] was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias[f] was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood[g] of Annas and Caiaphas, the word[h] of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.[i] 3 He[j] went into all the region around the Jordan River,[k] preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.[l] 4 As it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice[m] of one shouting in the wilderness:[n] ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make[o] his paths straight. 5 Every valley will be filled,[p] and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth, 6 and all humanity[q] will see the salvation of God.’”[r] 7 So John[s] said to the crowds[t] that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers![u] Who warned you to flee[v] from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce[w] fruit[x] that proves your repentance, and don’t begin to say[y] to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’[z] For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones![aa] 9 Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees,[ab] and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be[ac] cut down and thrown into the fire.” 10 So[ad] the crowds were asking[ae] him, “What then should we do?” 11 John[af] answered them,[ag] “The person who has two tunics[ah] must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors[ai] also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 He told them, “Collect no more[aj] than you are required to.”[ak] 14 Then some soldiers[al] also asked him, “And as for us-what should we do?”[am] He told them, “Take money from no one by violence[an] or by false accusation,[ao] and be content with your pay.” 15 While the people were filled with anticipation[ap] and they all wondered[aq] whether perhaps John[ar] could be the Christ,[as] 16 John answered them all,[at] “I baptize you with water,[au] but one more powerful than I am is coming-I am not worthy[av] to untie the strap[aw] of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.[ax] 17 His winnowing fork[ay] is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse,[az] but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”[ba] 18 And in this way,[bb] with many other exhortations, John[bc] proclaimed good news to the people. 19 But when John rebuked Herod[bd] the tetrarch[be] because of Herodias, his brother’s wife,[bf] and because of all the evil deeds[bg] that he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison. The Baptism of Jesus 21 Now when[bh] all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying,[bi] the heavens[bj] opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.[bk] And a voice came from heaven, “You are my one dear Son;[bl] in you I take great delight.”[bm] The Genealogy of Jesus 23 So[bn] Jesus, when he began his ministry,[bo] was about thirty years old. The Census and the Birth of Jesus 2 Now[a] in those days a decree[b] went out from Caesar[c] Augustus[d] to register[e] all the empire[f] for taxes. 2 This was the first registration, taken when Quirinius was governor[g] of Syria. 3 Everyone[h] went to his own town[i] to be registered. 4 So[j] Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth[k] in Galilee to Judea, to the city[l] of David called Bethlehem,[m] because he was of the house[n] and family line[o] of David. 5 He went[p] to be registered with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him,[q] and who was expecting a child. 6 While[r] they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.[s] 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth[t] and laid him in a manger,[u] because there was no place for them in the inn.[v] The Shepherds’ Visit 8 Now[w] there were shepherds[x] nearby[y] living out in the field, keeping guard[z] over their flock at night. 9 An[aa] angel of the Lord[ab] appeared to[ac] them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were absolutely terrified.[ad] 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! Listen carefully,[ae] for I proclaim to you good news[af] that brings great joy to all the people: 11 Today[ag] your Savior is born in the city[ah] of David.[ai] He is Christ[aj] the Lord. 12 This[ak] will be a sign[al] for you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.”[am] 13 Suddenly[an] a vast, heavenly army[ao] appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory[ap] to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people[aq] with whom he is pleased!”[ar] 15 When[as] the angels left them and went back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, that the Lord[at] has made known to us.” 16 So they hurried off and located Mary and Joseph, and found the baby lying in a manger.[au] 17 When[av] they saw him,[aw] they related what they had been told[ax] about this child, 18 and all who heard it were astonished[ay] at what the shepherds said. 19 But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering in her heart what they might mean.[az] 20 So[ba] the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising[bb] God for all they had heard and seen; everything was just as they had been told.[bc] 21 At[bd] the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given by the angel[be] before he was conceived in the womb. Jesus’ Presentation at the Temple 22 Now[bf] when the time came for their[bg] purification according to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary[bh] brought Jesus[bi] up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male[bj] will be set apart to the Lord”[bk]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is specified in the law of the Lord, a pair of doves[bl] or two young pigeons.[bm] The Prophecy of Simeon 25 Now[bn] there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon who was righteous[bo] and devout, looking for the restoration[bp] of Israel, and the Holy Spirit[bq] was upon him. 26 It[br] had been revealed[bs] to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die[bt] before[bu] he had seen the Lord’s Christ.[bv] 27 So[bw] Simeon,[bx] directed by the Spirit,[by] came into the temple courts,[bz] and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary according to the law,[ca] 28 Simeon[cb] took him in his arms and blessed God, saying,[cc] 29 “Now, according to your word,[cd] Sovereign Lord,[ce] permit[cf] your servant[cg] to depart[ch] in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation[ci] 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples:[cj] 32 a light,[ck] for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory[cl] to your people Israel.” 33 So[cm] the child’s[cn] father[co] and mother were amazed[cp] at what was said about him. 34 Then[cq] Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “Listen carefully:[cr] This child[cs] is destined to be the cause of the falling and rising[ct] of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be rejected.[cu] 35 Indeed, as a result of him the thoughts[cv] of many hearts will be revealed[cw]-and a sword[cx] will pierce your own soul as well!”[cy] The Testimony of Anna 36 There was also a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old,[cz] having been married to her husband for seven years until his death. 37 She had lived as a widow since then for eighty-four years.[da] She never left the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.[db] 38 At that moment,[dc] she came up to them[dd] and began to give thanks to God and to speak[de] about the child[df] to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.[dg] 39 So[dh] when Joseph and Mary[di] had performed[dj] everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town[dk] of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong,[dl] filled with wisdom,[dm] and the favor[dn] of God[do] was upon him. Jesus in the Temple 41 Now[dp] Jesus’[dq] parents went to Jerusalem every[dr] year for the Feast of the Passover.[ds] 42 When[dt] he was twelve years old,[du] they went up[dv] according to custom. 43 But[dw] when the feast was over,[dx] as they were returning home,[dy] the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His[dz] parents[ea] did not know it, 44 but (because they assumed that he was in their group of travelers)[eb] they went a day’s journey. Then[ec] they began to look for him among their relatives and acquaintances.[ed] 45 When[ee] they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem[ef] to look for him. 46 After[eg] three days[eh] they found him in the temple courts,[ei] sitting among the teachers,[ej] listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Jesus[ek] were astonished[el] at his understanding and his answers. 48 When[em] his parents[en] saw him, they were overwhelmed. His[eo] mother said to him, “Child,[ep] why have you treated[eq] us like this? Look, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.”[er] 49 But[es] he replied,[et] “Why were you looking for me?[eu] Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[ev] 50 Yet[ew] his parents[ex] did not understand[ey] the remark[ez] he made[fa] to them. 51 Then[fb] he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient[fc] to them. But[fd] his mother kept all these things[fe] in her heart.[ff] 52 And Jesus increased[fg] in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and with people.
Explanatory Preface 1 Now[a] many have undertaken to compile an account[b] of the things[c] that have been fulfilled[d] among us, 2 like the accounts[e] passed on[f] to us by those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word[g] from the beginning.[h] 3 So[i] it seemed good to me as well,[j] because I have followed[k] all things carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly account[l] for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know for certain[m] the things you were taught.[n] Birth Announcement of John the Baptist 5 During the reign[o] of Herod[p] king of Judea, there lived a priest named Zechariah who belonged to[q] the priestly division of Abijah,[r] and he had a wife named Elizabeth,[s] who was a descendant of Aaron.[t] 6 They[u] were both righteous in the sight of God, following[v] all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.[w] 7 But they did not have a child, because Elizabeth was barren,[x] and they were both very old.[y] 8 Now[z] while Zechariah[aa] was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,[ab] 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood,[ac] to enter[ad] the Holy Place[ae] of the Lord and burn incense. 10 Now[af] the whole crowd[ag] of people were praying[ah] outside at the hour of the incense offering.[ai] 11 An[aj] angel of the Lord,[ak] standing on the right side of the altar of incense, appeared[al] to him. 12 And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel,[am] was seized with fear.[an] 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard,[ao] and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; you[ap] will name him John.[aq] 14 Joy and gladness will come[ar] to you, and many will rejoice at[as] his birth,[at] 15 for he will be great in the sight of[au] the Lord. He[av] must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.[aw] 16 He[ax] will turn[ay] many of the people[az] of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go as forerunner before the Lord[ba] in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,[bb] to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.” 18 Zechariah[bc] said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this?[bd] For I am an old man, and my wife is old as well.”[be] 19 The[bf] angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands[bg] in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring[bh] you this good news. 20 And now,[bi] because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time,[bj] you will be silent, unable to speak,[bk] until the day these things take place.” 21 Now[bl] the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they began to wonder[bm] why he was delayed in the Holy Place.[bn] 22 When[bo] he came out, he was not able to speak to them. They[bp] realized that he had seen a vision[bq] in the Holy Place,[br] because[bs] he was making signs to them and remained unable to speak.[bt] 23 When his time of service was over,[bu] he went to his home. 24 After some time[bv] his wife Elizabeth became pregnant,[bw] and for five months she kept herself in seclusion.[bx] She said,[by] 25 “This is what[bz] the Lord has done for me at the time[ca] when he has been gracious to me,[cb] to take away my disgrace[cc] among people.”[cd] Birth Announcement of Jesus the Messiah 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy,[ce] the angel Gabriel[cf] was sent by[cg] God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,[ch] 27 to a virgin engaged[ci] to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David,[cj] and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The[ck] angel[cl] came[cm] to her and said, “Greetings, favored one,[cn] the Lord is with you!”[co] 29 But[cp] she was greatly troubled[cq] by his words and began to wonder about the meaning of this greeting.[cr] 30 So[cs] the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,[ct] Mary, for you have found favor[cu] with God! 31 Listen:[cv] You will become pregnant[cw] and give birth to[cx] a son, and you will name him[cy] Jesus.[cz] 32 He[da] will be great,[db] and will be called the Son of the Most High,[dc] and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father[dd] David. 33 He[de] will reign over the house of Jacob[df] forever, and his kingdom will never end.” 34 Mary[dg] said to the angel, “How will this be, since I have not been intimate with[dh] a man?” 35 The angel replied,[di] “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow[dj] you. Therefore the child[dk] to be born[dl] will be holy;[dm] he will be called the Son of God. 36 “And look,[dn] your relative[do] Elizabeth has also become pregnant with[dp] a son in her old age-although she was called barren, she is now in her sixth month![dq] 37 For nothing[dr] will be impossible with God.” 38 So[ds] Mary said, “Yes,[dt] I am a servant[du] of the Lord; let this happen to me[dv] according to your word.”[dw] Then[dx] the angel departed from her. Mary and Elizabeth 39 In those days[dy] Mary got up and went hurriedly into the hill country, to a town of Judah,[dz] 40 and entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When[ea] Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped[eb] in her[ec] womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.[ed] 42 She[ee] exclaimed with a loud voice,[ef] “Blessed are you among women,[eg] and blessed is the child[eh] in your womb! 43 And who am I[ei] that the mother of my Lord should come and visit me? 44 For the instant[ej] the sound of your greeting reached my ears,[ek] the baby in my womb leaped for joy.[el] 45 And blessed[em] is she who believed that[en] what was spoken to her by[eo] the Lord would be fulfilled.”[ep] Mary’s Hymn of Praise 46 And Mary[eq] said,[er] “My soul exalts[es] the Lord,[et] 47 and my spirit has begun to rejoice[eu] in God my Savior, 48 because he has looked upon the humble state of his servant.[ev] For[ew] from now on[ex] all generations will call me blessed,[ey] 49 because he who is mighty[ez] has done great things for me, and holy is his name; 50 from[fa] generation to generation he is merciful[fb] to those who fear[fc] him. 51 He has demonstrated power[fd] with his arm; he has scattered those whose pride wells up from the sheer arrogance[fe] of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the mighty[ff] from their thrones, and has lifted up those of lowly position;[fg] 53 he has filled the hungry with good things,[fh] and has sent the rich away empty.[fi] 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering[fj] his mercy,[fk] 55 as he promised[fl] to our ancestors,[fm] to Abraham and to his descendants[fn] forever.” 56 So[fo] Mary stayed with Elizabeth[fp] about three months[fq] and then returned to her home. The Birth of John 57 Now the time came[fr] for Elizabeth to have her baby,[fs] and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her[ft] neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown[fu] great mercy to her, and they rejoiced[fv] with her. 59 On[fw] the eighth day[fx] they came to circumcise the child, and they wanted to name[fy] him Zechariah after his father. 60 But[fz] his mother replied,[ga] “No! He must be named[gb] John.”[gc] 61 They[gd] said to her, “But[ge] none of your relatives bears this name.”[gf] 62 So[gg] they made signs to the baby’s[gh] father,[gi] inquiring what he wanted to name his son.[gj] 63 He[gk] asked for a writing tablet[gl] and wrote,[gm] “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.[gn] 64 Immediately[go] Zechariah’s[gp] mouth was opened and his tongue[gq] released,[gr] and he spoke, blessing God. 65 All[gs] their neighbors were filled with fear, and throughout the entire hill country of Judea all these things were talked about. 66 All[gt] who heard these things[gu] kept them in their hearts,[gv] saying, “What then will this child be?”[gw] For the Lord’s hand[gx] was indeed with him. Zechariah’s Praise and Prediction 67 Then[gy] his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,[gz] 68 “Blessed[ha] be the Lord God of Israel, because he has come to help[hb] and has redeemed[hc] his people. 69 For[hd] he has raised up[he] a horn of salvation[hf] for us in the house of his servant David,[hg] 70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago,[hh] 71 that we should be saved[hi] from our enemies,[hj] and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 He has done this[hk] to show mercy[hl] to our ancestors,[hm] and to remember his holy covenant[hn]- 73 the oath[ho] that he swore to our ancestor[hp] Abraham. This oath grants[hq] 74 that we, being rescued from the hand of our[hr] enemies, may serve him without fear,[hs] 75 in holiness and righteousness[ht] before him for as long as we live.[hu] 76 And you, child,[hv] will be called the prophet[hw] of the Most High.[hx] For you will go before[hy] the Lord to prepare his ways,[hz] 77 to give his people knowledge of salvation[ia] through the forgiveness[ib] of their sins. 78 Because of[ic] our God’s tender mercy[id] the dawn[ie] will break[if] upon us from on high 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,[ig] to guide our feet into the way[ih] of peace.” 80 And the child kept growing[ii] and becoming strong[ij] in spirit, and he was in the wilderness[ik] until the day he was revealed[il] to Israel.
The Resurrection 16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic spices[a] so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4 But[b] when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled back. 5 Then[c] as they went into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe[d] sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.[e] He has been raised![f] He is not here. Look, there is the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples, even Peter, that he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.” 8 Then[g] they went out and ran from the tomb, for terror and bewilderment had seized them.[h] And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. The Longer Ending of Mark[i] 9 [[Early on the first day of the week, after he arose, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven out seven demons. 10 She went out and told those who were with him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11 And when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After this he appeared in a different form to two of them while they were on their way to the country. 13 They went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. 14 Then he appeared to the eleven themselves, while they were eating, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him resurrected. 15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages;[j] 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands, and whatever poison they drink will not harm them;[k] they will place their hands on the sick and they will be well.” 19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 They went out and proclaimed everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.]]
Jesus Brought Before Pilate 15 Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law[a] and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.[b] 2 So[c] Pilate asked him, “Are you the king[d] of the Jews?” He replied,[e] “You say so.”[f] 3 Then[g] the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly. 4 So Pilate asked him again,[h] “Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!” 5 But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. Jesus and Barabbas 6 During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people,[i] whomever they requested. 7 A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection. 8 Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.[j] 9 So Pilate asked them,[k] “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?” 10 (For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)[l] 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release[m] Barabbas instead. 12 So Pilate spoke to them again,[n] “Then what do you want me to do[o] with the one you call king of the Jews?” 13 They shouted back, “Crucify[p] him!” 14 Pilate asked them, “Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted more insistently, “Crucify him!” 15 Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then,[q] after he had Jesus flogged,[r] he handed him over[s] to be crucified. Jesus is Mocked 16 So[t] the soldiers led him into the palace (that is, the governor’s residence)[u] and called together the whole cohort.[v] 17 They put a purple cloak[w] on him and after braiding[x] a crown of thorns,[y] they put it on him. 18 They began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews!”[z] 19 Again and again[aa] they struck him on the head with a staff[ab] and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him. 20 When they had finished mocking[ac] him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then[ad] they led him away to crucify him.[ae] The Crucifixion 21 The soldiers[af] forced[ag] a passerby to carry his cross,[ah] Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country[ai] (he was the father of Alexander and Rufus). 22 They brought Jesus[aj] to a place called Golgotha[ak] (which is translated, “Place of the Skull”).[al] 23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh,[am] but he did not take it. 24 Then[an] they crucified[ao] him and divided his clothes, throwing dice[ap] for them, to decide what each would take. 25 It was nine o’clock in the morning[aq] when they crucified him. 26 The inscription[ar] of the charge against him read, “The king of the Jews.” 27 And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.[as] 29 Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself and come down from the cross!”[at] 31 In the same way even the chief priests-together with the experts in the law[au]-were mocking him among themselves:[av] “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! 32 Let the Christ,[aw] the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.[ax] Jesus’ Death 33 Now[ay] when it was noon,[az] darkness came over the whole land[ba] until three in the afternoon.[bb] 34 Around three o’clock[bc] Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”[bd] 35 When some of the bystanders heard it they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah!”[be] 36 Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine,[bf] put it on a stick,[bg] and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to take him down!” 37 But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and breathed his last. 38 And the temple curtain[bh] was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 Now when the centurion,[bi] who stood in front of him, saw how he died,[bj] he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!” 40 There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses,[bk] and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support.[bl] Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there too. Jesus’ Burial 42 Now[bm] when evening had already come, since it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),[bn] 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council,[bo] who was himself looking forward to[bp] the kingdom of God,[bq] went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.[br] 44 Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He[bs] called the centurion[bt] and asked him if he had been dead for some time. 45 When Pilate[bu] was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 After Joseph[bv] bought a linen cloth[bw] and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock.[bx] Then[by] he rolled a stone across the entrance[bz] of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body[ca] was placed.
