This is an absolute masterclass I always come back to 🔥🙏🙌 In the OG I can’t copy pads, so I guess I’m left with resampling instead, although sometimes it messes the start/end point a bit and it’s necessary to readjust. Also, the little things: I found very effective that “resetting” of the start/end button you do, as it gets more precise that way. Please keep these coming if and when you have the chance. The one on the MPC 1000 is another I always go back to. All the best, brother
Thanks Jose! I didn't know the 404 couldn't copy pads?? I had a Dr Sample 202 somewhere in highschool, then jumped straight to the SX... Sounds like you have a good workaround with resampling technique. Thanks for sharing!
Wizardry in action! I humbly request a how-to video about the 404. I think I can handle mine pretty well, but there’s always something to learn from your how-tos. Also, another very humble request, if possible: something very brief showing how Larry, Mid-Air and Cigarettes achieve their sound. I’m a fan of how awesome their sound is and the nerd in me needs to know how you guys achieve it. These are just, again, humble requests for you to eventually consider inside your possibilities. I know I wouldn’t have the time. Thank you for all the awesomeness.

I can leave some info on those 3 artists here: Larry -- only hardware samplers and sequencers, all programming, no playing instruments, less is more, simpler the better Cigs -- initially conceived on 4-track cassette, may use a DAW for editiing and as a playback device BUT NO PLUGINS then mixed all analog, all hardware, and final mix back to tape. Mid-Air! -- no set rules / break all the rules, usually incorporates technology not directly meant for music to make music, major obsession with esoteric and lesser known dac/bit-depth/sample rate/converters and recorders... hopefully get some more vids up soon!

Oh I’m a fan of that other SP-404 video you linked, it taught me A LOT about chopping. I have the OG though, not the SX, so I can’t copy pads, as far as I know. All the best!

Usually 4 track machines sound too clear whenever I use them, how do you get yours to sound this lofi? Is it caused by you using a tape loop as a medium?
Beautiful soundz, mixer together, they remind me the '90s trip-hop, acid-jazz, trap, one step, Electro, deep, down tempo, mid tempo, vinyl loops, RnB, drum 'n' bass, jungle, dub, breakbeat, brokenbeat, rap, soul, jazz, syncopate rhythms, the '70s....ecc.. hey man, would you have any tips on why my pad 1 is permanently stuck hold mode, and pads 6-8 won’t make a sound unless in edit mode? appreciate your help 🫡
hmm sounds like something internal. are you using the correct power supply? also, if you have a floppy saved that pad 1 was not in hold mode, try loading that up and see if it clears the problem..

All transformers are different, so you must refer to wiring diagram for the specific transformer you are using. Sometimes its printed on the actual transformer, other times you gotta dig it up online. Diagrams provide info such as primary/secondary impedance(s), center taps, ground, and phase info so you can wire things for specific applications
the only MPC 1k drawback is the sequence copy feature. i.e: if I want to copy a bar, let's say: bar 80 to bar 100 on track 2, after it copies it returns to the main screen and resets the sequence to bar 0. so if I want to copy another bar, I have to enter the copy screen again and set the whole thing again. it should stay on the copy screen until the main screen button is pressed.

Chinese Cigs is a little of both.. everything is definitely conceived on a 4-track cassette machine. for Self-Titled and Laying in a Field, I tracked drums in Pro Tools, then mixed all analog and hardware only, never any plugins or dsp for ciggys
@@mindexpansionpuzzles should be similar.. in this vid every chop of the break is triggering a midi note, and I'm just omitting and forcing certain notes via Ableton to trigger the bass synth noises.
eventually the scotch tape will react with the formulation of magnetic tape, causing the loop to break, or in some cases, make a gooey mess inside the tape / tape machine.
