Example five must be wrong. The narrator says that after Green gybes they are on opposite tacks, but green gybes to port. The narrator goes on the say that Green completed her gybe before meeting red Had Green not gybed she would have had the right of way. It’s pretty clear they were trying to say once they were on opposite tacks Green had right of way. Just got it backwards is all.

Gonna jump in here after the airplane wing analogy. Changing the attitude of the wing to airflow does change the AoA, but it does not control the climb or dive behaviour. That is controlled with the throttle. The old model Bernoulli model of pressure difference has also been - not entirely- discredited but still in vogue because it is easier to understand than Circulation Theory. Which is how lift actually works on an airfoil, but nobody wants to do the math, or at least very few are capable of the calculus. You don't really need to work the numbers, the telltales are doing that.

What happens if three boats are overlapped and the leeward boat pushes the middle boat up into the windward boat? So green pushes blue into yellow. How can blue make room if it’s trapped?

Are you sure that so much grease in the hub will not make a issues later. To me at some point it will heat up and will get watery and start leaking, grease is good, but when to much then goes opposite way! How the trailer been doing?

An important question, i need a physics answer. In the case that vgm is parallel to the the wind Is it possible that the value of VGM is bigger than the value of the wind?

Many thanks for the answer, after much research you are the first to confirm that it is not possible to have a VGM greater than the wind. Sorry for the redundancy of the question, I ask you for a reinforcement, your answer is also valid in case of downwind right? Do you know if there are textbooks where you can study the physics of this topic?

Great Vids! Example 8 illustrates no overlap. Does that mean blue has acquired mark room rights simply by being in the zone when approaching the finish line down wind?

If the inside boat is clear ahead or has an overlap at the zone it has room (downwind removes the port starboard exception )

Thank you very much for the excellent guidance, which we think will help us race and cruise better! One very minor but fun point on weather- in the sixth minute, this video incorrectly suggests that global Coriolis effects consistently veer or back masttop wind direction. That effect is insignificantly small at the scale of a boat and its mast, or a bathtub drain, contrary to popular belief. Local obstacles, or squalls swirling either direction, cause any actual shifts in true wind layers. Of course, you correctly stated the typical apparent wind shift factors.

Is it tactically legal if yellow is on starboard, close hauled and below the layline and enters the zone after, or at the same time as blue, who is on a port tack and fetching the mark, (yellow has to tack to port to make the mark on a port rounding after forcing blue off course) and forces blue to tack to starboard to avoid collision sending blue upwind of the mark's layline?

How does Scenario 2 'Fast Luff' relate to Keep Clear b) 'if the right of way boat can also change course in both directions without immediately making contact' - was the change of direction in the Scenario too extreme?

The Toggle for gnat vang is backwards. The flat part goes on the bottom and the 45 angle on top.

You’re absolutely correct. We swapped the sides by accident. Spreader with red detail should be on the port side. Nice attention to detail!

Bit confused... at 3:30 you say the angle of attack will be 'smaller' (?) at the top of the sail. Is that because it IS twisted, or because it IS'N'T, and so needs twisting? Or would twisting make it worse? And I'm afraid no, I cannot see the twist very well with the diagram, as I'm not sure what I'm looking at... then you say a twisted sail will have LESS camber? So it's more twisted when it's flatter? I'm just totally confused now

Yes, it's flatter when more twisted. But, a sail can be flat without being twisted - think of a heavy air sail. With a fuller sail, it's a little hard to picture. Think of it this way: As the upper sail leech twists off, the sail becomes flatter over the entire chord length. Just picture taking a curved sail and pulling the leech to leeward. A flatter sail is gong to have a small angle of attack at the luff of the sail. It's hard to see from my drawing. This depowers the top of the sail.

”Leech telltales streaming intermittently”. Does that mean they are just about to stall or just about to luff? I mean do we seek maximum lift or maximum lift/drag ratio here?

Thanks for the question and sorry for the slow response. We're talking about the leech ribbons here. I don't think of this as stalling or luffing. They're responding to the vortices that get generated when the air moving over the windward side of the sail meets the air from the leeward side at the leech. in light to medium air, the ribbons will disappear behind the sail and then stream intermittently. If you're not pointing well in light to medium air and your leech ribbons are always flowing, try trimming the mainsheet a few clicks. In heavier air the ribbons might always stream.

My experience with this rule is that it doesn't really hold up well in the protest room unless the boats are of the same class (exactly the same). This is particularly true with mismatched symmetric/asymmetric class boats where fair and proper course has an even wider definition. I've seen it enforced well in team and match racing however when there are umpires around though. :). Very good scenarios to go through!

Here's a good real life GoPro example of the Rule 19 Example 1 given at the starting line. The boat taking the video did NOT have rights to have room but allowed the lee boat to pass ahead first. Blue comes to leeward mark on starboard well ahead of yellow (no overlap). Blue had to take mark wide to give to room to inside over lapped boats. Blue gybes to port and then continues turning up wind. Yellow still on starboard gybe (coming in fast) tries to cut inside of blue. Blue says you have no mark room. Yellow says starboard implying they are the right-of-way boat and then continues to round inside of blue, and eventually gybes. Blue keeps clear but is blocked from coming up to propper coarse (still near mark in 3-boat circle). Should blue protest yellow for not giving mark room? Does port/starboard apply or does mark room apply?
