Great video. I was born in South Shields and raised in Blyth and Ashington so perhaps I'm biased, but like several other posters, I have always looked on Northumbria as encompassing the whole of the North East from the Tees to the Tweed. I am familiar with the history of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria, but that kingdom ceased to exist when the Vikings captured York. I have read that the remnant of the kingdom (old Bernicia) was thereafter known as Northumberland. I have always looked on County Durham as that part of Northumberland that belonged to the Prince Bishops - if you look at old maps of the region, you will notice that Durham owns several areas of land in what is now Northumberland including Bedlingtonshire and Norhamshire. Anyway, no matter how fascinating the historical origin of the name may be, in modern parlance (police, tourism etc) Northumbria certainly refers to the whole of the North East - in my mind at least. If you haven't already read it, I highly recommend The Northumbrians by Dan Jackson - fantastic book.
Thankyou. Was a student nurse for just over 3 1/2 years. Loved living in. We got box of sweets for the nurses home each year.Is the black horse still there?? .
St. Mary's Church is as beautiful as its Name !!! Those who built it knew what they were doing, because they knew Who the Seat of Wisdom is, from Whom comes all Knowledge and True Science!!! Most befitting for a World renowned University, so let’s hope it again gains Its prominent Place in the field of sciences, because without It, it is all vain and goes to Perdition!!.....✝️
I've stayed twice in Knaresborough, which I love, but Harrogate is excellent for transport. The bus station is right next to the train station, so you can get to almost anywhere from there. I'd hop on the local stopping bus from Knaresborough, and be at the station in Harrogate in a few minutes, and then on to places like Ripon or Pateley Bridge. Thanks for your walks. Very informative, historic, and for me, memorable.
My great grandmother was born in Duncan’s Close on the Canongate. It was one that was torn down and now the veterans lawn bowling is there. I wish there was somewhere to get information on the closes that are gone.

Great Video! My wife and I visited Otley in 1974 while on our honeymoon. I recall visiting friends of my aunts who lived in a flat located on the opposite side of a street of a tannery that I believed was no longer used. Before dinner we were asked if we would like a beer. We thought she actually had the beer in her fridge but moments later she walked out the door with a pitcher in hand saying she was going to walk down the street to a pub and would be back shortly. Such great memories. Was wondering if per chance you would know the name of the street and the pub? My wife and I did have the opportunity of visiting the pub during our stay. I recall the washrooms were located at the back of the building accessed via a side door. Have such fond memories of Otley.
I love Tynemouth, I visit from Harrogate at least every month, coach to Newcastle then Metro to the brilliant market then a few pints in the Turks Head, thanks for sharing ❤
