I am a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Bernardo Faria and a 2nd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
This channel is going to help make sure you have a solid foundation for you BJJ game! The highlight reels and Instagram techniques are great for sure, but understanding the fundamentals is where everyone starts!! Learn how to pass, recover, sweep, submit, and more from these videos!
I am an instructor at Bernardo Faria's BJJ Academy in MA, assisting head instructor and world class competitor Marcos Tinoco. I have been a martial arts and fitness enthusiast for over 25 years.
I also do a ton of Mobility work too - check out my instructional at BJJ Fanatics!
You do a great job of getting so much information in a video without missing the major points or talking so much my ADHD makes me change the video. Great job.
Good question - the first answer would be that if I set up my grips right then I'm good to go and it won't fail. But if I rush and don't have what I need, much like any sweep, I'll be in trouble and have to adjust. Which leads to my second answer- where I would be fighting for arm control on one side (over or under hook) and grabbing the belt on the other side. Then I would pull them forward using the belt and one leg hook, adjusting the other hook to rotate towards the mat for a traditional butterfly Sweep. 🦋
Another good question - I think that as a top player, we want heavy weight on our opponent and a solid base so we can start countering. The bottom player needs to control that weight, have leverage, and stop the top players ability to post. So if the top player gets heavy shoulder pressure and has collapsed both hooks/hips and their ability to lift and/or rotate, the boytom player gets stuck. But there is a tipping point - depends on which player is using their technique and mechanics better. Hope that makes sense. Qood questions!!! Thank you 🙏
I play a ton of butterfly. Good point about pulling the guy on top of you too far. I made this mistake a ton of times and it's not the best spot to be in. You don't want to be flat on your back with a guys weight on top of you when you're playing butterfly.
@workharderandsmarterbjj Just a heads up from my small group. We have a really hard time remembering the channel name. Maybe a name that is stickier can help your channel. 🤔 Maybe something personal and unique to specifically you 😀
At 135lbs I pretty much exclusively play butterfly and half butterfly. Gotta keep these big bastards off me by controlling the inside space! Good vid, I use this all the time.
My small team was working off your butterfly videos today 💪 Thanks to channels like yours we are at 3 regular rollers + 2 just beginning and another +3 hopefuls. So could be 8 by the end of the month. Jiu jitsu is the best 👍
@workharderandsmarterbjj Ive watched marcos for a couple years. That guy is so good and super friendly 👍 I've bought a bunch of stuff on fanatics from the big names. It took me a long time to figure out Bii for me Is all about getting lost in the flow. The real deal is having the best time with friends 😁
Cool details, I'm getting good results with using butterfly for guard retention but have trouble completing the sweep on taller opponents even with good grips
Agreed - taller/longer opponents, especially with a good base (like wrestlers) will be hard to sweep with just one move. But pay attention to how they respond - try and chain something off that response. If you off balance then they have to re-balance. Keep moving ahead of then and you'll find success 👊
Absolutely!! Check out Adam Wardzinkski - he just won words using butterfly and situp guard....smashed everybody. Even better, check out Marcelo Garcia in his ADCC years - he put the butterfly guard on the map!!!
@workharderandsmarterbjj excellent tips! I'm a huge Marcelo and Adam fan. I just never put the two together lol. There are just so many Jiu Jitsu techniques. Amazing sport 👏
Get after it!! Not gonna lie, it takes some timing to get the knee in - and you have to bump them right away to get that knee up to their armpit, or they'll just sprawl and crush you back into side control. But it creates space, one way or another 😄😄😄
such cool stuff. I love that pulling the far elbow detail. Will it work if your opponent does a rear-naked chock grip with their arms as well? It looks like it would since it seems similar to when Matt grabbed his own sleeve instead of a gable grip, maybe?
Great suggestion! I would invest in arm lengtheners 😉 Haha just kidding - instead of the belt, use the jacket. Same effect can be made by gripping on the back of their gi and pushing away/down, using your 'length challenged' arms to stop their shoulder pressure. 👊 The rest of the recovery is the same 🙏
Fantastic details! I noticed in my training getting the angle before the lock can be difficult, you're basically getting the lock and then start working on your angle having their head in with your own leg at first.
@@workharderandsmarterbjjhey I train Williams guard everyday tryingto master it. I tend to get my lock when I'm flat on my back because getting the angle first can be very difficult on good grapplers, it seemed like the inside tie on the far bicep caused them to collapse flat on their face where I could get my angle easily, was this the case with you also? I've been starting out with their head on the inside of my lock with my leg and then switching once I make them collapse with the inside tie. I really appreciate your input
Vibe of the channel is excellent! I am building my own channel with a small group of guys. Can I add some short clips of your videos as we train. I'm always positive, give credit and trying to grow the community :) If you ever have an issue ill take it down right aways also :)
@@workharderandsmarterbjj Will do! Its taken me a really long time to get my channel rolling exactly how I want to. I will give you a heads up when the quirks get hammered out. Huge thanks :)
It works!! Just be careful because they don't always let go and have to verbal tap. So hold their hip, sit back on your hip and stiff arm them - then go slow 😉
I randomly found this channel and was like Wow thats my favorite light Gi from Gold. Then I was like hmm is that the Guy I bought the daily deal for BJJ excersizes! 😮 Awesome me and my friends are leveling up on my channel. Your kind of my east coast doppelganger 😮😅 Even the prayer hands wow. Can wait to check out your channel in more detail 👍
Wow, thanks!! That's all gold 🤗 I'm glad you're digging the channel and the instructional too!!! I'm filming this weekend for another one, super stoked for it 🙏
The overhook control will work for sure, but it will far harder to keep that far arm controlled to set up the sweep. So instead of using the ubderhook to that far elbow, get a grip on the outside of the arm on the gi and then kick out the bottom knee. It's more work but will be successful if you get all that!!!!
Great question. There really isn't anything someone from the bottom can do grabbing your first leg when you start standing up. But once you have both feet up, sure they can grab and sweep you in a multitude of ways. However...the key to this break is that you're pinching your knees and elbows together which locks in their hips, plus you are leaning your shoulders forward. They literally cannot push you back or pull you forward because they're locked in. Once you get their sleeve you can stand up like a statue and be safe. And as you start stepping back, their guard will break open...it's super uncomfortable on their hips. 👊
Thanks for the kind words!!! This was one of the first videos I filmed when I started working at the academy. I should probably do an updated one now that I have better quality videos ha ha
