Welcome to Audio Nostalgia!

This channel was developed as a result of a lifetime passion for modern and vintage HiFi, DIY and music. Most of the videos hosted on this channel relate to reviews published on my website, and they intend to demonstrate the look and feel of the equipment but not its sound.

For detailed information about the gear featured in the videos, please visit my website audionostalgia.co.uk, where you will find descriptions, specifications and my subjective opinions on many modern and vintage speaker constructions. My aim is to experience & explore, and share my HiFi adventures with other enthusiasts around the globe.

In the near future, I'm planning to create educational videos related to setting up HiFi, optimising listening rooms and psychoacoustics.

Enjoy!

Yamaha are too revealing and bright sound amplifiers true to the souns the same as Tannoys . Bad recordings bad sound
@AudioNostalgia
@AudioNostalgia 3 месяца назад
Not sure if I'd agree with your statement. If an amplifier is too bright, than it is either a poor design or it was designed purposely to colour the sound in a certain way. To my, job of an amplifier is to amplify the signal - nothing more or nothing less. As a matter of fact, in a properly designed blind test with modern well designed transistor amplifiers, it next to impossible to tell them apart.

Hey! Very different sounding speakers. I personally replaced my Yamaha NS-1000M with Harbeth M30.1 because I like their sound more. I then replaced M30.1 with M40.1 as I liked their sound even more. So although I've not compared the NS1000 with M40.1 side by side, I'm pretty sure I'd be leaning towards the M40.1 in my room. You can read my reviews of all 3 speakers here if you are interested: audionostalgia.co.uk/yamaha-ns-1000-m-review/ audionostalgia.co.uk/harbeth-m30-1-review/ audionostalgia.co.uk/harbeth-m40-1-review/ All the best, Shem

I have a pair rebranded as the Lafayette SK-210 and I'm researching how to best use them, they came to me without cabs. Ot seems they were a custom DIY speaker available perhaps? Lovely setup. Looking forward to your review of it happens. Im curious what genres these excell at.

Harbeth's do colour the music, because they have an enclosure. Magnepan's can't colour. So the last comes closer to life acoustical music. Electric music can never be a reference because you are listening already to sound equipment. Magnepan let you hear everything that happens in the music and they let you hear the character of your equipment and room acoustics. Buy the way you have to treat your left wall in the room. Now there are wrong reflections. I hope you have learned, for free, a lot now. Finally, the 1.6QR is the greatest bargain in high end! And you have the bass you want, because it's only a 2-way.
@AudioNostalgia
@AudioNostalgia 4 месяца назад
Ohh Peter, why is it that people with little knowledge are always the first ones to give others advice? I guess you are not familiar with Dunning-Kruger effect. What objective evidence is supporting the statements that you are making - or are you just quoting Magnepan marketing materials? The claims you make, sound like the folklore that you see people repeating in forums rather than objective truths. There is a body of academic research from the last 40 years focused around loudspeakers, acoustics, and psychoacoustics. We do have a decent objective understanding of what loudspeaker parameters are responsible for our perception of realistic sound. Are you familiar with any of the work by Martin Colloms, Alton Everest, Sean Olive, or Floyd Toole? And regarding the comment about the left wall treatment - what made you say that? You are clearly a big fan of Magnepan speakers, so you should be familiar with the radiation pattern of dipole speakers. Magnepas (being dipole speakers) project very little sound to the sides and most of their sound front and back. As such, the side wall treatment is more of a priority for conventional speakers rather than Magnepans.

@@AudioNostalgia Nice try from you searching for arguments. You wanna impress readers with that. Measurements and other scientific talking will convince a lot of people. But let me ask you a few questions. Did you ever see or even hear a musical instrument? And a little more difficult: have you ever heard of the formant? You are wrong about me having any commercial connection with Magnepan. I am a pro Conservatory musician, working for 45 years every day with acoustical instruments. And as a hobby busy with hifi from the beginning. What pro studies did you do? Thanks for your attention.

These speakers benefit from being "refurbished", I noticed the caps in x-overs of mine had drifted badly out of tolerance, replacing them with some high quality film capacitors really helped tame the shouty vocals, another few things I did was to replace the foam that should sit between the grill cloth and the grill frame, this also helps with the frequency response, these speakers do prefer the grills on imo, I think the grill really helps with the diffraction caused by the large bezels around the baffle, further proved by how the HF 1300 is mounted, protruding out well into the hole in the grill. Lastly was to reglue all the joint seams in the box, I used calk, this really firmed up the bass while extending the bass frequencies lower, kick drums easily punch down to 50Hz. While I don't think you can call the true HiFi, unless you're like me and can't hear much above 13KHz, I still think they're fantastic speakers worth a little love if they're in pristine condition.
@AudioNostalgia
@AudioNostalgia 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the feedback - glad you had good experience with these speakers. I measured the caps in mine and surprisingly they measured OK. I can totally see how having the grilles in place would be beneficial in taming the high frequencies and helping with edge diffraction. All the best!

“And get Ry Cooder to sing my eulogy”- The Tragically Hip…..Hey AN Beautiful DP-47F. Thanks for the demo. Thinking I like these better than the new DP-3000. As the legendary owner, of an amazing hi-fi shop, once told me- “All turntables should be automatic”. He did a great job settling up my DP-300/Dl-110, a long while back. I just put it back in the line-up to tame a little Klipsch beast…did the trick. That cartridge is pretty special. These 47’s are so cool. Magnetic tonearms…🤯 They don’t make them like that anymore…🍻

Thanks. Yes, the DP47F are really nice decks. My only concern with them is how easy or difficult it would be to fix them if something went wrong with the electronics. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, these GRF cabinets really did not work with original MG15 crossovers. Also, at the time my knowledge about XOver design was rather limited (still is TBH) and I did not have a way to do gated measurements of these speakers. Considering the effort that went into building the enclosures, it would have been nice to have more technical background to troubleshoot why these did not sound good. What are you building? 😁
