I have also heard that if you start TRT you are stuck with it because coming off makes you feel absolutely terrible. Plus you lose all your gains quickly which adds to the mental and physical spiral. Is this true?

I’ve never used it. I don’t really talk to my mates about it - plus they’re over 50 now so they’re happy to be fitter and happier. There’s a great fb group about strength and conditioning science so could ask there or look up Huberman and TRT

Interesting video. Competed in powerlifting at the local level and its pretty obvious some were "on". See it in Jiu jitsu at the hobbyist level too. Not many but a couple. I didn't see the Ruotolo brothers interview but Im shocked they train at such a low frequency for their level. Very interesting insights from you. I think alot of these giys pay the price with their health. Gordon Ryan is a prime example. I dont know what else he has to prove. He should relax and prioitise his health now. Alot of other K1 fighters either died or are suffering the effects of steroids. Personally I think TRT is too much of a crutch but each to his/her own.

Always start with Jiu Jitsu - it’s the best base for everything else to build on - you can add Thai boxing and boxing after but don’t at a proper mma school where it’s a system - the stance and foot work for Thai and boxing often gets corrupted and purist coaches will complain about your stance ( my experience) There’s a great you tube video of Mighty Mouse interviewing Kade Ryuatolo ( spelt wrong ) yesterday where both explain it well..

Kimura from underneath is far more common as people are reaching for the head or pushing the leg down - I’ve hit Americana from underneath before but never experienced it myself - I’ll have a look at it for you Saturday morning

@@BeepBoop2221 if they’re using both hands to try and secure your arm there’s nothing protecting / blocking your hips so escaping should be easy. The time escape is not once a lock is applied - it’s as it’s getting set up. Also, most people don’t frame correctly, don’t hip escape correctly too. Also, you don’t have to keep your arm framing against their neck - it can reside in the far side pretty safely. I’ve done videos on escaping side control so I’d suggest watching those first.

I’m 5”10. We only do gi training - the guys still win no gi comps, I think the speed on training in no gi would become a factor for most over 50. That said, maybe the flowy nature would help them move their body in more creative ways so could be beneficial. Best this to set up o soto is o Ouchi - or Harai Goshi. Pretty sure I did a o o Ouchi to o Soto video a few weeks ago. Thank you. When people ask about stuff I’m happy to do a video about my experiences

Thx for this. I've been having pinky stiffness and pain from trying collar sleeve during rolls. My pinky fingers can't close fully nowadays. I'll try this and see if it helps!

When playing spinner guard you should aim to NOT close your hand - but hook onto the sleeve instead

Another thing is aging. How many 60 year olds do you find sparring in striking arts? It just isnt safe. You can still find older guys grappling at an advanced age. Its tough but still safer than the striking arts.

Awesome video. Too bad theres no double like button. Broke my hand with a fist, fingers swollen like sausages, couldnt even half close it the next day. Prefer to use palm strikes and slaps now. Ever since I started Jiu-jitsu my fingers have gotten thicker and cant clise my hand into a tight fist. Love this topic. You should do more videos on it.

How do you train, knees, elboes, heDbutts against a live person? Ive seen training whrre a woman goes up against a padded assailant with an oversized helmet. Its called the Bulletman suit. Peyton Quinn and U think Bill Kipp wete the pioneers of thus training.

Those suits would be awesome - but likely very expensive. When I started Jiu Jitsu we just trained that way on each other - hence why most older Bjj guys are wrecked physically. Mostly we just drill moves and if people wanted to go hard they’re welcome too - although most don’t. Most self defence is grappling and not a lot of striking. Once you have control of people you really don’t need to hit them much and striking on the ground is pretty simple due to lack of distance

Is the far knee pinning the arm? Can't see with this particular front on angle. Interesting. I've gone from side control to NS quite often of late and try to hit the choke. Its been hit or miss so far. Any other high percentage submission from NS position?

T choke is really high percentage and there’s a t choke arm bar too - yes I start with pinning his far arm under my knee/ thigh. Should be a few videos on the side control Kimura here so you can see it. I’ll endeavour to do a few videos on t choke - although there should be lots already

Yeah he’s only done a few classes so good to let him relax and play. Jiu Jitsu tends to be much much slower than judo due to the strict time restraints in Olympic judo. At my gym we rarely have time limits at all

@@Per12189 same same - just a few adaptations / additions on the ground - just as Judo has had additional techniques added over the years - it’s all the same just with a slight change in focus - self defence / kick punch throw grapple and some weapons. Just percentages change as they do in any art or sport. Not all soccer clubs train or play the same but it’s the same sport - martial arts is the same once you’ve done enough at high level.

When I’m rolling from one side to the other solo it’s a solo drill to teach you how to move whilst keeping connected to the ground. Anything’s possible in Jiu Jitsu but it’s also unlikely. There’s also a big difference between “ giving “ your back and having it “ taken “ - I don’t mind giving my back if that’s the best option.

Wasn't Relson the best streetfighter or the most notorious for getting into streetfights in the Gracie family? I think the other was Renzo who got shot in the leg on a beach in Rio.

I was privileged to place all his stripes on his Red Belt in Hawaii. Relson and his Hawaiian guys are very good friends and we all talk the same style of Jiu Jitsu- self defence first/ defence first. Rio was a violent place and if you’re young and in a fighting family it’ll find you. Was awesome spending a few days with Relson whilst he trained special forces and police guys - 99% of the Gracie SD is great.

I remember you saying that singles and doubles were the worst takedowns for the streets due to elbows being delivered to the back of the neck. What takedowns, throws do you recommend?? Another great video BTW. Hugely underrated channel.

I’m trying to upload a few videos about this. Most fights start standing almost chest to chest , so judo style trips and throws are perfect. O Soto Gari, o Ouchi Gari are great as you don’t have to go to the ground. If they push you then Sasae and de ashi barai.

@@alessiochiaramonte8388 kata Guruma is a throw I’ve learned but never used at all in a randori or fight situation - I think there’d be some amazing tutorials on it online. Pulling guard is very hard to predict unless you know the fighter , the school they come from to know their habits. Also traditionally guard pullers were lanky with poor posture and no butt and typically walked duck footed. These days it’s so prolific you can’t tell based on body type but definitely some schools prefer it and do no throwing. We do zero guard pulling at the gym as I don’t want to encourage it. As always with facing most types of guard don’t allow the soles of their feet to touch you. Check out my video about “ Dirty Feet” - a game we play to teach students not to allow feet on them. I know a little about grip fighting but no expert when it comes to standup. It’s a real science the judo guys have really invested in. I know a few basics. I’d assume it really depends on the throws you specialise in - I’d start there. Are you taller than average for your weight? Are you shorter? I teach a few basic combinations for each scenario. Will post more tmw - filmed last night but videos won’t upload sorry.

And people wonder why the throw doesn’t work. Same as white belt Bjj - it’s primarily designed for the street where it’s assumed people won’t know Bjj - then blue to purple is the journey of how to make it work against other Bjj fighters - hence set ups / deception and combinations are required. If you get taught one throw you should always get taught the complimentary throw. Sasae / de ashi barai and o soto pair up very well. As do o soto and Harai Goshi

Thank you. I used to be decent at throwing and my old broken body does its best to help others learn - it’s not pretty but you get the idea and hopefully can make it work for you. The biggest issue I see with Bjj guys trying to throw is they don’t know set ups and don’t know how to create combinations - yet on the ground that’s the norm after purple belt. Treat it like boxing - work on each individual technique THEN create combinations asap because that’s where the magic is. So many get counter thrown when trying to do O Soto the way they do in drilling - but that’s not how it works in reality. Choose two throws that oppose each other then you can start throwing people. Judokas all do this - most high level judokas specialise in two throws

Great information. How do you train stand up safely? A lot of BJJ schools limit stand-up due to the greater risk of injury.

A) most Bjj schools don’t really dedicate much time to throwing but the issue is not knowing how to fall properly- most don’t roll or break fall properly so no wonder they have fear when throwing. B) You need to know how to breathe when rolling or falling to limit tension in your body. When I train kids they do throwing every class and fight from standing every class so they lose that fear - adults over 40 really struggle especially since their bodies for the most part are not in good shape to start with - also most gyms want everyone rolling at the same time , which when doing take downs / throwing just isn’t realistic or safe. So king of the hill is best. Just have two or three people standing and opponents take turns coming up to fight them. If a knee or back hits the floor they’re out and a new student steps forwards

The other consideration is mats and flooring - judo schools often have sprung floors and 50mm high quality mats - not 30mm cheap jig saw mats like too many Bjj schools. Quality flooring really helps!

@@dariusrana8487 kids bodies are pretty resilient and they’re also very light - so they get away with more than 45 year old office workers who live a sedentary lifestyle , are 15kg overweight and joined Bjj to get fitter… hence high quality mats are a must and a good indicator your coach cares about the students.
