I knew Charles Poliquin like a brother! When he was in Montreal for his seminars that I attended, he would come over my house for supper. He gave me his EAS JACKET AND WE GOT A PICTURE TOGETHER. He was an innovator in strength training! Loved the man. He’s was funny, big hearted and a true gentleman. I remember him doing facia release to stimulate muscle growth! Miss you my brother, R.I.P . Mike Servedio . And my memories of you is when I see your EAS JACKET hanging in my closet! When you worked for Muscle Media 2000, for Bill Philips. 🙌
Not my favorite. Use the Hatfield variation (safety squat bar with hands holding the rack for balance) to increase stability and overload the movement to get the most out of it.
Hey therw, thanks for all the videos. How often should this workout be done. This is for an adult league player. Also cycles and lifts but I'd like to add some plyo to my program.
Suspicions confirmed. Hockey players are average white boys in terms of athleticism. But ridiculously skilled and smart at their sport. The vertical jump height is the best measure of explosiveness and god given athleticism. Your sprinter or nfl corner are all going to have 34” plus verticals. 25” is abysmal
Yes. Hockey players have incredible sport skills but will get smoked by NFL players and sprinters on activities that measure general athleticism such as vertical jump, broad jump, or sprinting.
19years old male 150’s bw Bench: 185 for 3 Squat: 335 for 3 Deadlift: 365 for 3 Haven’t maxed on squat or deadlift in ages but that’s with a year of going to the gym 5-6 times a week and before that I was inconsistent with the gym for about 1.5 years. I’ve plateaued a bit, should I still expect to see big gains in the next year?
Your first year of proper training will always produce the biggest absolute gains. Doesn't mean you won't improve going forward, just that the rate of progress will slow down. So don't compare your Year 1 gains to what comes after, otherwise you'll be disappointed when your numbers are going up but slower than before.
17 yrs old, male, 185cm about 27% bf Im 106kg Bench 80kg Never tested 1rom squat And deadlift 110kg 1year training, I’m obviously natural but do you think I’m bellow average?
180 lbs weight when I started I could only do the bar for bench press, squats, and Deadlifts. Now I can only do 100 lbs at the most. Deadlift and Squats maybe 120-130 lbs. So I clearly made progress but its not up to these numbers here. I’ve been kinda stagnating with these numbers here actually as when I push myself to increase weight Im struggling to hit the targeted reps. What is it that is wrong?
Good video. I would also add the ghc device is superior in the respect that you can get a more full range of motion. You can fully lay out and extend at the knee, which is impossible with nordics
Lots of my programming comes from disciples of Poliquin, like Ben Patrick and ATG. Obviously Poliquin knew something, you don't train the most Olympic medalists in history across sooo many different sports if you don't know something about strength training. Glad some other hockey trainers are using this too💪
First off, there's no such thing as an elite 13-year-old player. They're children. Nothing elite about them. And 13 year olds are not ready for plyometrics. Jump training, yes, under quality coaching. Plyos, no. Watch this video to understand the difference: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8OuSazpFjR8.html Jumps should be a part of off-ice training also during hockey season for young athletes IF coaching and programming are on point. Which isn't the case most of the time.
I'm pretty sure Pavel Datsyuk had the same kind of result. And he had a pretty, pretty good career. 😎 Funny how nobody is testing their IQ and their creativity...
I'd like to see more speed, because if he can blow by those he's up against he would be a goalies nightmare. He is working on this in games as I watch him play, and that's good. Considering where he's at being only 18, I agree with you that making this his focus off season he could show up next year just busting. He's a fierce competitor. I saw an interview with Wayne Gretzky where he said he wasn't really a fast skater, and went on to list several things that he did that he felt were only average. That blew my mind, especially if he was being honest and not only humble. One other thing about Bedard is he doesn't have one good player on the team with him as of now. He's playing with kids I hope will develop into very good players. When Kane joined the Hawks, they were loaded! That team should have won 5-7 championships. I wish they would have asked Toews and Kane to return to help mentor the kid. Especially now knowing that Kane would have said yes, and sure Toews would have too. Thanks for the video.
This episode should be called where r they now. How many of these guys who smoked Bedard in these tests r beating him in stats in the pros currently 11 goals 9 asst. Intangibles can’t be measured. These tests in my opinion benefit nfl scouts way more than nhl.
Did they do any sick wristers with defenders on you did they do any I’ve got eyes in the back of my head tests who cares about the nhl tests Gretzky probably couldn’t even bench press the bar he was so skinny
Sure. I have a full video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2hFZ1M1oy7I.html -- How To Take Creatine Monohydrate For Beginners (NEW Research!)
The combine has very interesting fitness results combined with total irrelevance for success in hockey. Players should be evaluated on their hockey ability - no wait, they are!
I’ve been getting a lot stronger overall in my last two months in the gym getting back into beer league hockey but I notice the stronger I get the quicker my body gasses out on the ice. Should I not do higher set for muscle conditioning or should I leave that all to calisthenics and cardio?
That has never been my experience. As long as you don't train like a powerlifter (low reps of >5 per set, long breaks of 5 minutes between every set), getting stronger shouldn't lead to gassing out. Sounds like you'd benefit from basic conditioning work in addition to lifting. Jump rope, push a sled, run hills. More on the topic in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rC_JK4Z8ITo.html. Also check your nutrition and body fat. Many guys think they're getting "bigger" while eating in a calorie surplus, yet too much of the added mass is body fat, which will absolutely tire you out faster.
I think I remember a Great Canadian Hockey Player who regularly finished last on his team during the annual fitness test. His name you may recall was Wayne Gretzky. So I guess we can say the test has no real correlation to how good of a hockey player one may be in relation to how many chin ups one can do. Much like Larry Bird in Basketball his fitness level did not measure up to his greatness.
he will not reach the 100 points he not a playmaker like crosby or mcdavid what l ve seen from him to date a goal scorer most of his assist were deflect from his shot or rebound from the goalie but not play made by him he is a player like mattews but alot smaller sorry for my english not my first language
It's obviously his intangibles that make him so awesome. This stuff is essentially useless. His nose for the puck, rink vision, and awareness are the things that set him apart from everyone.
What is overlooked here is that none of the very best talents in the game have been the strongest people of the draft. These combine stats have little if no effect in whether or not the top prospects will remain top picks in the draft. Muscle mass and power will be gained season by season as they mature and their body/metabolism adjust to the 82 games a season pace in professional hockey. Not possible to catch up in hockey skills, however. Being bad at darts doesn't mean being bad at javeling throw, is all I'm saying.
Your comments about Connor Bebard were insightful. Back in the late 80's 90's I worked with the Canucks as their first S&C coach. I used Dr. Jack Blatherwicks team USA testing on skating and correlated them with drylnd tests. Electronic timed skate, 20m sprint on land. Force platform VJ( not mats) Long Jump and Vertical Jump. BP with average team bodyweight etc. There was a very high correlation between those tests and on ice speed and agility. Also skinfold corrected mid thigh girth had the strongest r value to Jump and on ice and dry land speed. The standing triple jump was also tested and seemed to give an insight into athletic ability. We had 2 first round draft choices that were 2 SD slower than our average on ice sprint. We had a goalie in full equipment who was as fast as they were. What I started to believe was there is a difference between a specialist and a high level of athletic ability. The better athletes can change more with training and coaching. The simply good hockey players plateau. The good athletes are capable of development for a more extended time. Coaches don't build athletes, the old Scottish adage" ye cana put in, what God has left out". And Tarasovs belief, I can teach them to play hockey, I can't teach them to be fast". Fast often mistaken now for less slow. S&C Coaching can only make you less slow. The future of Bebard will be interesting? The scouts need to explore more about the athletic background of the player. Was he any good at other sports? Owen Nolan started later at hockey than any other of his draft year, was 4th in 100m at All Ontario 100m highschool and HJ. over 6 ft in highschool. Never started hockey at 5 years and played no other sports.
Super comment. Very interesting to hear about the correlation between off-ice tests and on-ice speed back in the 80s/90s, which also has been documented in published studies. Appreciate you sharing all this!
