Gosh, don't want to sound rude, but you're rather harsh towards him. Firstly, he was never intended to be a virgin (neither he was in the books), and while I agree that him going to the brothel was unnecessary, I understand why writers did it. For him true intimacy is not only sharing a bed, but also thoughts and feelings and that's what he writes in his diary. He may easily enjoy sex (and there should be nothing bad about it), but he wants to feel emotionally connected with the one he shares bed with. Writers never took anything from him. He is still sweet and kind, but he only shows his true self with Penelope. He loves travelling, he loves writing, Penelope reading the passage about women was only to show us how he doesn't feel any connection with these women. I don't understand some of your points at all. 1) He clearly tells Pen in 3x01 that he misses her and we can clearly see that he was bothered by her not answering to him. I would even say that he is hurt, because he didn't write much to his family, but wrote to her only to get no answer at all. 2) He doesn't owe her anything. By that I mean that as long they are not together he can have sex with anyone. But him not caring about her, are you serious? He literally ends conversation with other men just to go after her, apologizes to her the very next morning. But do you even understand why he went to a brothel in 3x02? Cause Pen saw right through him. Wrote about him being fake which lead to him wanting to have not one, but two women and be like "Oh, yeah, LW doesn't know me, I'm cool, I'm a man". We don't know how many times he went to the brothel, but does it really matter? The whole episode 2 even before their kiss shows us that he has feelings to her which he can't yet understand. I would say that after their kiss he couldn't think about anyone else, in episode 4 he goes to the brothel only to hate being there, he is not participating at all and looking anywhere but these 2 women. And oh, god, it took him so long to confess for many reasons. Penelope never gave him a sign that she had feelings for him. You may say "How could he not know she has been in love with him this whole time?" Easily. He never knew Penelope who wasn't in love with him. She fell for him the minute she saw him. She runs away after their kiss, tells him that nothing of this sort will ever happen again and their lessons need to end and she clearly enjoys being with Debling at the ball in 3x03 and in library in 3x04. Colin thought that she didn't reciprocate his feelings. That is why in the carriage he feels ashamed when she says "But, Colin, we are friends"and tries to apologise.
