Excellent advice for 18-22” distance from sofa to coffee table. I’ve seen designers suggest as little as 12”, but I’ve tried it and it’s way too tight.
Kelly, great video! May I ask your opinion? If your living room is carpeted, is it okay to layer a smaller rug in front of sofa as an accent. I have a large living room with soft taupe carpet. Thanks!!❤
Thank you for sharing this…. Everyone is so hyper concerned… natural materials ALWAYS age better! In Europe we have it everywhere. Sometimes it is aged on purpose!
0:01 - I do like the black lamp arrangement on the gold end table. The only thing I would change would be to remove those 3 white books from under that rustic looking box under the lamp. (Just my opinion 😉)
Can you please describe in a video how you start from scratch. Colour palette first. Or find your favourite sofa and work from there. Where’s the starting point?
Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, finding large artwork can be challenging! It's one of the reasons we launched an online art shop where we specialize in large pieces. If you're interested, you can see our selections here: kellyhopterdecor.com
Hi Kelly - I'm leaning towards Swiss Coffee for my small cottage living room - when you say that you'd use the same colour for trim (just with a different sheen), would that include the doors too?
Very good, intelligent and well thought advice, not limited to american or european criteria nor mere temporary fashions that would smack of nouveau riche and probably would be dated in no time. If one collects art, persian rugs, or designer furniture, those pieces should be given priority and must be listened to, as they will hang or place themselves where they can be better appreciated, complementing each other. On a generous coffee table, a small blooming plant may lend it humble warmth among other more elegant or expensive pieces…
I’m struggling with a coffee table with Bernhardt leather sofa that has power recliners. The chairs on the other side of the room have two chairs that have ottomans. How does one put a table in this situation?
In a situation like that I would rely more on martini tables to put down my drink. But I'd still have a table, or perhaps a more sculptural collection of nesting tables, in the centre to help fill that empty floor space
haha, you have a keen eye, Judy. Admittedly, we use such arrangements sometimes for photoshoots, In real life, I love using oversized florals on sideboards or consoles but lower arrangements on coffee tables.
I hope you keep going, your design channel is my absolute favorite on youtube!! When more people find you, I believe your channel will blow up. Thank you for the wonderful content.
This was so incredibly helpful. Thank you! Torn between Chantilly Lace and Simply White so ordering samples. Excited to dive into your channel; continued abundance to you!
I bought 3 paint decks, 2 from Farrow and Ball and one from Sherwin Williams. I can almost instantly do a live reference from something inspiring I have seen online, sometimes they have almost no relation to the image online.
I have to agree with you, colors often get distorted in pictures, which coupled with how screen can represent them can result in a color that looks very different from real life.
Do you have to use the same white paint colors through out your house downstairs. We live in a traditional 2 story country home built around 1902. My husband has made cherry wood tall woodwork trim and doors throughout the house. We have the midnight blue Ilve stove and I would like a contrasting blue that would go well with it in the island.
Not at all, you can use different colors for different rooms. I would just make sure that you're aware of any transitions room to room - rooms that connect to one another should be the same color.
I have a brick fireplace in an open floor plan family room with south exposure, and having hard time to pick a mid-tone greige to complement. It would be wonderful if you could do a video to guide picking paint to go with bricks. Thank you for the very informative video.
Kelly, do you recommend/prefer polished marble or honed marble? I understand the differences of both, I just want to know if in terms of care and durability if you feel one is better than the other. I’m down to the wire now on getting my countertop slab selected, so hope to get your response soon :) thanks
Both have their pros and cons :-) Honed marble is more scratch resistant than polished but it is more susceptible to staining. You will also see water stains more on polished. Since one isn't necessarily more durable than the other, I suggest you go with the look that appeals to you more.
Very lovely consult! Wish you were nearby bc I am still struggling ! Just not a lot of natural light in my house. And the windows I do have are small. I'm also concerned about using a more saturated white /off white in the north facing rooms. Especially in the IN cold gray winter months. I actually was thinking the wall behind you in your lovely home was Simply White. So I was considering more than the Chantilly Lace I have been leaning towards, in comparison. My hardwood floors are a dark 'cocoa' brown. And I want them to 'pop'. Wondering if Simoly White wood make them look 'off' or vise versa? Oh, and my cabinetry is a light ivory or cream? My concern is would CL be too 'off' making either the cabinets or walls dingy. Or vice versa? My goal is for my home to feel fresh, and cozy, cheerful year-round. Yet, also warm vs chilly vibe in wintertime. As I said, I am struggling! Appreciate suggestions from you or people in this thread who have a better eye for color and style than I have!
