Smokey was as eloquent as ever, but I disagree. There's no such thing as black people, or white people. My understanding is that these colors are part of a Eurocentric color-coded caste system where white is on top, and black is on the bottom. We should all turn in our membership to this caste system. My vote is for African American, to be descriptive. After all, I am of African descent, no matter what some may say. I may have never set foot in Africa, but my mirror, and my DNA tell me that I have been to Africa. So, It's a no for me. I say we are neither literally, nor figuratively "black." Come on. How can one BE a color?
Smokey was speaking some strong stuff up until about the 4:30 mark; THAT, is where I differ with his message. Yes, there are some ignorant, less culturally conscious Africans in Africa just as there are some ignorant not so culturally conscious Africans here in America. And yes, there are some Africans who don't recognize any kinship with us Africans here in America; but THAT is, as I stated, ignorance, and can be corrected with knowledge and understanding. That way of thinking is of the minority in Africa anyway! The majority of Africans in Africa recognize us as "the stolen Africans", and welcome us back home. Also, regarding his comment at the 2:32 marker, let me say this...if/when the worldwide African diaspora garner the solidarity that we need to prosper and control our own destiny in this world ever materializes, and if the momentum of Muammar Gaddafi and now Robert Mugabe's Pan-African movement and envision of a United States of Africa ever takes form, Africa will be the place to be! I am not saying we should ever give up on America, because we have a stake of ownership here, and as he stated, alot of Africans died building, forging and emancipating this country. But, we need to build a social and economic bridge to Africa and become a whole people again.
NBC Universal was about to rename one of its affinity group THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EMPLOYEES GROUP until I pointed out that it totally eliminated (vibrationally and linguistically at the very least) ALLLL the BLACK employees from the islands, Cuba, panama, the UK
They were already black man in this country who were free??? yeah that came with Columbus and other European travelers for trade. They were not native to this country.
Definitely support this. I can't simply call myself American because we're steeped in racial ideology, so black American will have to do unfortunately.
