1999 through 2001 I tested the VMT System that was brand new. Think RFID reader in the road every 1/2 mile with wifi between the car and the VMT System. Awesome system
The Northeast Extension, route 9, now 476, Ended or began at 76 and it went up to Scranton. It was incredible. There were so many tunnels. They removed the tunnels in the 60s and put the road over the hills You can still find a few old tunnels if you look The opening sequence of Vacation, a post card shows one of these tunnels
Now all they have to do is actually have restaurants inside some of the rest areas. Many times the road signs will say there are a half a dozen different types of places to get food but when you go inside there’s actually one and if you’re lucky it isn’t closed. Many of them close at 6 o’clock so if you’re traveling at night you’re out of luck.
Why don't they just come out and tell you they're waging a war against the automobile? It's so obvious. The tolls go higher and higher yet the roadways never expand. We're still driving on the same archaic 1950s era four and six-lane expressways that cannot handle today's traffic. How 'bout those HOV lanes that nobody uses? What a total failure and waste of taxpayer money these HOV lanes are- not to mention discriminatory! You pay more and get zilch in return. That Philly infrastructure is particularly abysmal. All the money from the tolls will go into the governments' public transportation system to pay for the astronomically expensive liberal utopian fantasies the government has about how we're all going to SO happy shoved into slow moving, crowded buses and trains that stop every five seconds, break down and are late constantly. Go buy a bike because we're going back to the 1900s!
One thing none of the toll commissions touch on is that there needs to be a balance of your money in the account to cover tolls and gets replenished when it gets down to a certain level. Well that money goes into an account. Where does the interest on that money go? No one says a word about that. Hmmm!
Pennsylvania used to be a very nice state. Reasonable prices for tax and tolls. But today they are catching up with New Jersey. All they are missing is the corrupt politicians.
The cost to drive on the turnpike is absurd. Just keeping the PA turnpike commission rich. The other sates that have toll roads don't have prices any where near these rip off prices. And most states don't have tolls. The commission needs to go. You pay taxes for the interstate system so why not take advantage of their resources.
The PA Turnpike Commission is one of the most corrupt and power-hungry organizations in existence, look how many CEOs ans big wigs who've been indicted on criminal charges for corruption. Joe Brimmeier ensured turnpike contracts were awarded to vendors who gave money to Democratic candidates. They are probably mafia run since there is no oversight of their activities. www.wtae.com/article/ex-senate-leader-7-others-charged-in-pennsylvania-turnpike-investigation/7460320
Ever heard of maintenance? Bridge repairs? Those of you thinking that the road is *already paid for* aren't thinking of those two sets of costs, are you? I use EZ-Pass in Maryland, and we already use AET on MD-200 (in short, no tickets at all).
Now, I-95 took some part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to connect with the New Jersey Turnpike so that I-95 would not pop out of nowhere on the New Jersey Turnpike
I hate the new Service Plazas. I miss the old Sideling Hill Plaza and the Bob's Big Boy there. I mostly travel from Harrisburg West Shore to Breezewood. I used to go the whole way to Somerset. But it's got way to expensive now.
Now if they could only figure out how to connect 95 to the Turnpike. hmmm. Because right now its impossible to connect from one to the other without crossing into NJ first.
Actually it doesn't moron. it just says they are moving to electronic tolls. no where does it mention making an connection between the two roads. do not patronize me. I can see.
The PA turnpike is a scam. In fact, the whole fucking state is a scam. I'm moving to Arizona in late fall, and I can't wait to get the hell out of this shit hole that I call Shitsylvania. The whole fucking rotten state can rot in hell.
Very nice video, I'm a bit of a road geek and really appreciate the PA Turnpike and its history, although I'd rather drive the old Lincoln Highway. I'm sorry to hear they are knocking down all the old service plazas, those are part of the roads history too and at least one ought to be preserved.
Hell a trip for me today on the turnpike is still a pretty cool thing to do. We don't have mountains or tunnels here in Southwestern Ontario, Canada so its always special
Tolls on the PA Pike were designed to pay for the road. Well its long been paid for. Time to open the Pike and remove the tolls. They are ridiculously high anyway. You need a mortgage to go from the Delaware river to Ohio.
antares4s well dum asses boycott the road but you can't can you?I have to be first and I don't know why people have to be first the world is round who is first ? its not flat like your heads
Carl Mac well you must like your balls being touched by the private enterprise you can't blame the government officials they sold it and bought something different a bridge to know wear
I love the pa turnpike they are not a robber stealer or a cheater they just have some issues so it take a while And I know they charge more they just need some money so ECARG GNAW is stupid
I've driven Irwin to Breezewood many times and enjoyed it, except for the mess at US 30, getting to I-70 toward Maryland. But it's not that bad. However, the commission is doing the right thing by replacing and widening the 1940 pavement; some portions were beginning to washboard quite badly. I hope they keep one service area, Midway, the way it was; looks like they've tried with renovations and additions to the original south building. Keep a little of the history alive. It's a shame the abandoned tunnels have deteriorated as they have; I realize it would probably cost too much to fix them up a bit, put lights back in them and use them for a non-motorized trail. It's still a fun drive. Haven't been there since 2012.
Oh there is way to much graffiti in the Abandoned Turnpike tunnels now. Every time I go there is new graffiti painted over other graffiti. LOL But last I heard it's being patrolled more to try and stop that.
They also used this project as a justification of hiking toll costs. I am soon canceling my EZ Pass with PA and closing the account. Looking forward to it.

Not stopping for the ticket and then stoppimg to pay the toll to the toll booth operator destroys what was so cool about the Pa Turnpike and iy kept people employed.
@@SchardtCinematic If Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf wants cashless tolls, then Pennsylvania doesn't have a choice; and if President Trump wants cashless tolls, then Pennsylvania doesn't have a choice. The toll booth operators can find other work.
