I went to listen to Callas sing this first and then came here. It might be near blasphemous to say so but I think Bartoli is much better and more expressive❤

Als großer Bartoli Fan muss ich leider sagen. Es fehlt die Unterstützung des Dirigats. Wer immer hier das Heft in der Hand hat, die Tempi, die Phrasierungen unterstützen die Größe der Partitur leider nicht. Die Vorlage, auf der die Phrasen sich in luftige Höhen entfalten können, sind zu schnellatmig. Da hat jemand vergessen, worum es geht: Der Sesto ist die Nr. 1 in dieser Oper. Mit dem hegt Mozart die größte Symphatie. Das spüre ich hier nicht. Dem Sesto muss man feinfühliger, mit mehr Substanz, mit weiteren Schwingen den Hof machen. Der muss sich länger auf den Phrasen ausbreiten dürfen.

mah, che sia una grande artista lo sappiamo tutti, però in questo caso *per me* la purezza della melodia è rovinata da tutti questi inutili tremolii della voce, un risultato insulso e melodrammatico

Frau Bartoli, beeindruckende Meisterin des Gesangs, bitte bleiben Sie sich selbst treu und ruinieren Sie sich bitte nicht Ihr schönes Gesicht mit ärztlichen Eingriffen, das wäre unnötig. Sie verfügen über alles was zu einer schönen, intelligenten und beeindruckenden Dame gehört. Gott mit Ihnen, weiterhin viel Freude an Ihrer großen Kunst! 🌻🌻🌻
Why do mezzo-sopranos want to sing Cleopatra. I'm not taking away from her talent as a singer ... but Cleopatra has nothing to suffer. It is a stretch to find anything that causes her to sing a aria of pathos. She is a spoiled child who has aligned herself with the enemies of Egypt. Bartoli and all other mezzo-sopranos would do betta to try to convey the great emotional grief of a son whose father has been beheaded. Handel give Sesto 5 of the most magnificent arias ever written. The character can take the opera away from the heavies. Those arias cover the range of emotions and the music❕️Handel was never able to surpass the emotional feelings of Sesto, in form and especially the mind-blowing music. Five of the most sublime pieces of Baroque Music.
Uno spettacolo non all'altezza di Rossini, con la regia non frenetica come una lucida follia come la definiva con acume Stendhal, ma frettolosa. Si vede che i viennesi sono di bocca buona. I cantanti non tutti all'altezza, i costumi inverosimili con colori rutilanti, gli arti che si agitavano, i ventilatori che proiettavano le pale di luci e ombre sulle pareti davano un senso di confusione che faceva quasi scomparire le grandissime doti musicali di quest'opera deliziosa. Basta poi sentire l'eccezionale finale dell'Atto Primo, dove l'ascoltatore dovrebbe uscire di testa a sentirlo, niente, non ne sono uscito matto. Ma con Abbado si. L' Italiana di Abbado edita purtroppo solo in CD, e un altro mondo. L'opera in rappresentata in teatro e' passata alla storia interpretativa anche con la grande regia di Jean Pierre Ponnel, purtroppo di quelle recite ci sono rimaste solo le foto.
Magnificent music was made in this production no matter how bad the scenery is. Every Handel fan should have this DVD. Every artist in this production is a star in their own right. It's the very best interpretation of Giulio Cesare I’ve ever heard, just ignore the kitch
