This show is usually described as disappointing and old fashioned. HOWEVER, just by watching these terrific songs so brilliantly performed I think I would have loved the show (just sayin').
Juliet Prowse headlined this production of Mame which played the Alex Theater (Glendale, CA) and also Spreckels Theater (San Diego, CA) in respectively April and May 1994. Bob Mackie did costumes for Ms Prowse. Gretchen Wyler as Vera.
Because it was filmed in 1974 by a private camera person and they only recorded what they were able to and the rest is either lost or was never recorded.
This is very cool. I grew up with The Music Man, played trombone because of it, was in the play in HS (barbershop quartet), and ended up in a barbershop singing group. First time I've ever seen a video of Meredith.
The thing that was groundbreaking about this production was to have Asian actors play the Asian characters which wasn’t always the case in every single single production of this show, unfortunately.
Love Christine Baranski - she really is an incredible talent. (Although, I suspect this song was called 'Cherie' (being french for darling) as opposed to Sherry (being british for trifle!) 🙂
"Belle Poitrine, be quiet!" was a goof. Belle hadn't married Fred Poitrine (also played by Sid Caesar) yet; she was still Belle Schlumpfert, as Mr. Pinchley sings: "Dear Miss Schlumpfert, you've been such a comfort." I wonder if they made that mistake every performance.
IMHO it was intentional - to explain to the television audience why there was suddenly a different actor playing Belle and to connect her to the actor they first met as "Belle" in the introduction.
