Since wheel spin is an issue, it is possible to do custom brackets. I forgotten how to do it, but you can do custom brackets in dragy so that you could glean out say, your 30 to 60 or 30 to 90 times and that way you can get rid of all the wheel spin you could be rolling and you can compare that and I’ll bet you that you will get a difference between the stock rims and the lighter rims for acelleration

You go on a diatribe about how the AC inverter eats your range, then at the end of the video you have wide-open wheels that are really aero inefficient. That seems a bit hypocritical. Also your math for the cooler battery runtime doesn't add up. First, a 190 Wh usable battery can only power a 40W load for about 5 hours, not overnight. If the cooler battery drains overnight, because it's only 60W input with a 40W load, the 220 Wh battery only gets charged with 20W. So it would take almost 11 hours to charge fully while running the cooler at the same time, not 4 hours.
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 18 дней назад
While possibly good point on the wheels, stay tuned for the next episode where we dig into that efficiency or not. 50lb less rotational mass vs. more open face rims, place your bets!

Does the Rivian not have a low voltage DC that you can tie into? I would imagine that it’s at least a bit more efficient than the inverter.
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 18 дней назад
You know yes it does, but the battery is absolutely tiny. Worse, much like the AC inverters, the HV>12v charger requires the computers to power up. Part of this series will be discussing that issue too...
@patrickwheeler7315
@patrickwheeler7315 16 дней назад
I had the same question and look forward to that discussion later in the series. Briefly, does the Rivian detect that the 12V battery needs to be charged up and then run an HV->12V charge cycle to do it? If it doesn’t, then the risk is that you have a bricked EV in the morning. If it does, then there’s obviously a cost to running that charge cycle, but is it limited just to the time required for the charge? In other words, the trade-off here would be running the fridge all night on 120V with the inverter powered all night vs running the fridge on 12V with [whatever black box handles HV->12V] running only for as long as necessary (presumably not all night).

I think it goes without saying that the first generation Rvian vehicles were far from optimized. The second generation appears to be much better. Probably the best answer to your issues is to buy a second generation truck.
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 18 дней назад
There are some real cons to go with the pros of the R1.2 trucks. Smaller frunk, no physical door handles, probably no silicon carbide power inverter on the rear axle for the Dual Motors. Yes the new electrical/computer system would be great to have, but it's not all upside...

Oh I feel your pain. Having the XC60 PHEV (that you know in and out) and we go camping in a non rooftop tent with it. We have a 1kWh Ecoflow and oh how I wish we could top it up with a 230V AC plug from the car. Just quickly as it supports very high powered charging and then shit the car off. But the XC60 PHEV doesn't offer that. So we have to have the whole car active to activate the 12V outlet to recharge the ecoflow... What a waste of energy. You basically have to hold the battery charge in the XC60 to be able to have the car sitting idelling for hours and hours over the weekend to re-charge the ecoflow to run the cooler and our phones and cameras. And then you drive home on petrol as you'd have to anyways.... But still
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 19 дней назад
So the cute trick I figured out with my old XC60...was to literally hard wire a 12v connection from the vehicle's battery (a very nice large AGM, vastly bigger than the Rivian's) to my Bluetti camp battery. The camp battery would slowly soak up power until the voltage dropped enough for the Volvo to cycle on the HV>12v recharger, it would do it's thing, and then the process would continue and repeat. Much better than actually turning the vehicle on.

Great video! I have the BougeRV fridge that I keep in my frunk and use for local grocery shopping. It gets too hot in there during the summer months and road tripping so I put it in the gear tunnel or truck bed on road trips. This last road trip up to Silver Falls in Oregon and down the Oregon coast, I folded up the right rear seat and set it on top of the sub woofer for easy access. Power drain was about 5% per night when we were at campsites without hookups. BTW...a couple of your Amazon links are duplicated/missing.

I don’t think the BougeRV itself is the cause for your 5% power drain; it’s your Rivian’s AC inverter and whatever else. because I can run my BougeRV freezer/fridge combo on my Ecoflow 1 kWh battery and still have a lot of charge left after a 10-12 hour day. That’s why I recommend anyone who is doing a lot of road tripping or camping to use a portable battery’ power station. It also comes in handy for keeping the MacBooks and iPads charged with built in USB-C ports and eliminates the need to carry the big AC adapter blocks on the trip.

I wonder if the Out of Spec team unknowingly had the charger ratings limiting charger locations in the Rivian nav. If the EA station they wanted the Rivian to route to had a 'C' or lower rating and the nav was limited to selecting 'B' or better rated chargers, it would explain the preference for the Rivian waypoint charger.

Yes but, to be clear there are no 'charger ratings' in the onboard route planner, as shown in this video. I hear you...if you wanted something that could drive for 3-4 hours straight, at any practical speed in any weather, while only using say 60% of your battery capacity because you're road tripping and need to save 10% at the bottom at skip 30% at the top so you can recharge fast and keep rolling, that would be something in the 600-700 EPA mile range.
