I think Max is not being completely honest. After the defeats with Volk, Max was in a limbo situation, with no chance to fight for the belt with Volk as a champion. Why would he fight with Korean Zombie or with Justin for the bmf if he had options for the belt? That's why a fight against Ilia no longer made sense. He would win Ilia an then a fourth fight against Volk? Hell no! The funny thing is that if Max has options for the belt it's thanks to Ilia.
Ilia has nothing to do with Volks in terms of style… it’s not an improved version of Volks. They’re worlds apart. As for the matching with Max, Ilia is way more crisp, technical and powerful. And he has the gas tank.
