This channel is named after me because it is about things I do or have opinions about. It isn't a scale aircraft model channel - although, for now, there are mainly videos about that. It isn't a music channel - although, for now, there but a few videos about that. It isn't a vlog channel - although there will occasionally be videos like that. Well you get the general idea. This is a channel about everything I do. I am limited in facilities & equipment but hang-in there & this channel will improve, one day, I hope.
The Jag didn't have a radar. The large circular display is supposed to be the old moving map display, though it is actually too high from my memory of them.
Thanks. Yes, I think Airfix make sure the designers have building experience these days. I know there are no perfect models but some kits have rather odd issues.
Not bad. You could flatten the tyre on the wheel for the UC that is too long. A Jaguar would have need a long runway to get off with all that lot on though.
Thanks. The UC is a bit to fragile for me to start fettling for the sake of a degree or two off horizontal. Onwards to the last full model of the year.
The landing light shone out well in the intro almost as if it was illuminated. I must say I don't remember the white around the canopy but I didn't work on Gnats only during training.
That "light" part is good at producing a sort of glow isn't it. I imagine the main problem with working on Gnats is all the bending down to reach them. ;-) I've probably said before but the last year the Reds displayed with Gnats, I had my first pleasure flight at St Athan and we had to wait for them to land.
Thanks. The putty line is probably out of scale but its the thought that counts. Its not that detailed a kit a little feature here or there helps the over all look.
Its the same "current kit" as when I made a darker red one a few years ago. Includes parts from that time too. It is from a "starter set" so only has one decal option. I think Airfix misses a trick by not including a few different serial numbers or an option for a different fuselage white flash. They'd sell more I think if they did that. It is not the previous Airfix kit from the 1960s/70s which was absolutely awful,
Thanks. Only the Red Arrows Gnat and Jaguar rebuild to complete before the winter lull. Unless we get an "Indian Summer" before the cold dark days of late Autumn & Winter set in.
Hope you enjoy building it. I bought it because of the P-51D which used to be on the UK Airshow circuit in that livery. Now re-painted as a red-tail called "Tall in the saddle" I think. I'm going to use the Airfix kit because the wing looks a little too curvy to me on the Hasegawa kit.
Well, it makes a change doesn't it. In fact it has got more views than the previous three model videos. That's the advantage of being able to edit video now. No long shots of an empty bird table.
All of them. Well some models were unrecoverable but: Red Arrows Gnat, SEPECAT Jaguar, Swedish Bulldog (when I can buy or make replacement inter-wing struts). Other than that I'm re-making a few kits but using some old parts from those that broke. Such as: Gulf War Tornado GR1 H. P. Hampden Harrier GR.7 Also got some quick repairs of the damaged Spitfires and Bristol M1.C from last week.
Thanks. I won't argue about the definition. I put it back together, so whatever doing that is called, that's what I did. I'm going to do a Red Arrows Gnat again, using some parts from the one I broke. Wheels, 1x undercarriage door, elevator tails, seats, controls & instrument panels.
Oh yes, a bit tricky. Especially since the front leg part almost always snaps, due to a thin connector between some sort of moulded-in actuator and the main leg. However, while looking through some old photos, I found one of a build of the previous Airfix Gnat (as a Red Arrow Gnat), which had what I could only describe as main UC based on not looking at a Gnat. The design had more in common with a Jet Provost.
This is most definitely NOT a "starter set" despite what the box says......there is a ton of flash on it (not starter friendly),the fit of the 2 fuselage parts is AWFUL and its so bad Airfix should have included a tube of filler with it because you ARE going to need it.......a LOT of it......if you are a starter and really want a Tornado then AVOID this.....there are many much better Tornado kits out there that go together much easier and dont require as much clean up as this even though they are not labeled as "starter" kits.
I agree. Its an old kit though. Probably from the 1980s. Raised panel lines etc. Sadly I don't have this model anymore and not because of "the big smash". I can't remember why now. Sadder still, there is no F3 Tornado in 1:72 available from anyone (unless this kit is knocking around in a shop or 2nd hand stall somewhere). It is a very unrepresented type. Even the Airfix "GR4" kit was just an even older GR1 moulding with a few extra parts. For an aircraft used by at least 3 major NATO airforces, the lack of options in 1:72 is shocking. Only the Italeri & Revell kits from the 1990s as far as I know. The same is true for the Hawker Hunter, which makes even less sense. The only 1:72 Jaguars available lack a clear part for the nose. As for aircraft such as the Javalin, well not in 1:72. If someone wants a Canberra in 1:72 the only options are £30 or more and in less than brand new tooling.
I thought about it but didn't have the right sort of thing to use as a patch. I could have just painted them but I'd have had to do something to give the impression that there were gun ports underneath. Maybe I could have used a very very small round file perpendicular to the leading edge. I'd still have to find a way to mark where the holes were. Perhaps a spot of paint? If I build the other copy of the kit, I may try that.
Thanks. Its not too fancy but at least I can edit bits together now, that I did over a week or two. I've got a new build Mk.1 Hurricane from a Polish squadron nearly completed. That's probably next week's video. Then I've got to put a 1960s livery Gnat back together.
Thanks. Not sure about the paint. My hypothesis is damp or heat from my fingers, softening the paint? At first when it happened on the nose I thought of leaving it as "weathering" but it got worse. More like when the Valkyrie lost its paint by going too fast. Anyway I daubed some paint on and it looks okay without my glasses on.
I love the comment you made early on, along the lines it is a static display rather than flying aircraft. Good glue tip for the canopy. Not a bad restoration.
Thanks mate. I'm glad I didn't bin it last year. Now a few little restoration jobs for a handful of other survivors. Then the big job to rebuild my orange & silver Gnat and the Gulf War Tornado.
