On read on some social media people comment how hip hop is a black thing, their culture but I’m pushing 50 and I remember in the early 80s how big breakdancing was to us Latinos in Chicago. House music was the same, Latinos embraced it as much as the brothers. To the youth who don’t know do some research.
I went to JR HS & HS in Queens NY from 82-87 and saw this in person. Kids would bring cardboard boxes broken down and breakdance in the hallway between classes or in the Gym. We had Rock Steady Crew kids and i remember the fashion of that time well. I was friends with Phife from Tribe Called Quest in 85-86, he and i were in classes together, also Pepper from S&P went to my school. Outside sometimes Run DMC or LL Cool J would be outside with Huge boom boxes waiting for friends to get out. It was a very surreal time looking back. The school was 2000 students, fights, gangs, and i was a minority. 4o white kids lol. But I survived to tell the tale. JK it was crazy though. Saw 3 fights a day kinda crazy.
