"...Scotlands best theme park" That's not exactly saying much. Kind of like the Frankie Boyle quip "the handsomest man...in the burns ward" Anyway this video was a bit of a rollercoaster in itself, soaring from talking normally in the live footage and plummeting to ASMR during the voice-overs, great fun.
I seem to remember having to park in a wet field, and some cars needing to be pulled out by tractor. Toilet blocks made of the cheapest unplaned wood, and my child getting a huge skelf in her hand. Wasn't good enough to warrant a second visit.
My great grandmother worked in domestic service in Loudoun Castle. She was there until just after the 1918 'flu epidemic. She then married my great grandfather and became housewife and mother.
I worked at the Magnum for a couple of years. It's annoying to hear people in Irvine say how great it was. No one went in the last decade or so. Some days the ice rink would go all day without a single customer, the bar was deserted, the pool had almost no one in it. If they'd kept using it (if they loved it so much), it would never have closed. You can't run a leisure centre with no income.
My back garden was more of a theme park 1 semi decent ride.. Don't make a theme park. Shame the potential is there. As I believe is the customer base. People just don't want to visit a glorified fun fair. Someone would have to go balls out landscape the whole place add several new 1 off a kind rides from top tier manufactures at least of which has some special/unique pull too it. Accommodation decent night time entertainment etc. Plonking down a couple off off the shelf rides just won't work. Maybe the group in charge off flamingo land should look at this site if there loch lomand project comes to nothing. 😊
Been a few times, however only I can remember is my pals mum bought him a brand new white jumper a few hours before we went. Had a few goes on some things then went to the dodgems. Had a blast then when we came off a massive rusty oil stain was right up his back ruining the jumper. His maw went ape shit 😂
One thing our Councils and Government is outstanding at, wasting money £ If Only they had the same money for fixing the state of the Roads, they are a disgrace!!!!!!!
@@bingobaz6402 that was only the Official Enquiry. You'd need to understand Scottish Law and how our court system works. They were going to be dragged through The Civil Court system and could potentially have lost every penny and asset with their name on. No amount of wealth can protect you in Scotland when the other side has access to 100% free Legal Aid.
Nice vid, the magnum was a huge part of many peoples lives. The portal as mentioned, has terrible parking issues and a lot of wasted space and the swimming pool is always closed with problems and its limited to when there are no classes. A bit of a shambles really
Yes I know the last month there’s been a lot of problems with the portal but hopefully now it’s all fixed for a good while at least 👍 thanks for watching
@@TVAyrshire C'mon mate, 99, Ayrshire. We travelled from not far up the west coast. We were 14/15. Not Saltcoats but not as far as Greenock. Fantastic times 👍🏼 We all grow up sadly 🏴
Loved the magnum when I was younger. Used to go down from Paisley every other weekend for skating and swimming. Was devastated when I heard it was closing. Always wanted to take my own kids. Same with the Big Idea over the bridge.
Good doc. Interesting and totally agree. My papa opened the Magnum. Jack Carson. His name was on a plaque in the foyer. I asked to get this when it ess being demolished and was ultimately ignored. Really really sad.
thanks for using my comment (1,40) the magnum sadly was doomed the minute the council had control lack of funding and terrible management a sad loss to many peoples memories the portal is a sad badly thought out replacement
Why spend millions on another leasure center when that money could have been spent refurbishing the magnum I had a lot of memories there I met my wife there learned to swim I was there 3-4 times a week sad to see it go 😢
Yeah the timing of the decision seemed strange, I think the magnum did have several issues with accessibility but the portal hasn’t necessarily solved them all.
Loved the place the hours I spent in the skating and swimming, so sad to see it gone every time I drive past I give the empty space a look a must say the same thing the Magnum was there not so long ago, so sad 👏👏
We’re hoping to do another very short follow up to this with someone involved at the time, but here is a link to one old document Ayrshire Film Company sportsleisurelegacy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Magnum-LC.pdf
@@TVAyrshire Alas, Killie are no longer the oldest professional club. I believe I was the originator of the claim in my book ‘Killie - the Official History’ in 1994. I felt it sounded better than ‘Scotland’s second oldest club,’ so given that Queen’s Park were amateur Kilmarnock automatically became the oldest professional club. However they were not the first club to turn professional. Officially no one can make that claim. Professionalism was legalised in Scotland in 1893 and Scottish League clubs turned pro overnight. Kilmarnock didn’t turn (part-time) professional until 1894 and joined the Scottish League Second Division a year later. In November 2019 Queen’s Park voted to turn professional. Kilmarnock’s claim was based on happening to be the oldest club in Scotland that was professional, not the first club to become professional. So Queen’s Park now hold the title of being not only the oldest club but the oldest professional one too. Killie do still have some claims to fame that can’t be taken away though. They took part in the first ever Scottish Cup tie on October 18th 1873 when their match v Renton kicked off ten minutes earlier than the other ties played that day. Incidentally they fielded just ten players in that match. Additionally Kilmarnock are the only club to have competed in the Scottish Cup proper in every single season since its inception in 1873-74. Queen’s Park, who you’d think would share that distinction, failed to qualify in 1911-12. Now that’s out of the way I wanted to say how enjoyable I found the video. Some really great photos there and thanks to you and your team for making it available online.
I think that when the Magnum was built, there was a cut-back of funding (or something like that) that stopped them from building the top floor of the Theatre, the Fly Tower. I worked with Borderline Theatre when we put on the first show in the Magnum Theatre. The scene-cloths could only be lifted half way because the building was too short, and we had to figure out a method of lifting the bottom of the cloths up as well, to get them out the way. The winding handle for the curtains (the Tabs) had been made so that you couldn't turn the handle without taking the skin off your knuckles. - I discovered that! A bit of work with a hacksaw and spanners fixed it. 🤩
