#8 “Big and Chunky” by Will.i.am Trust me, nothing tells a normie you want have a horizontal duet than playing this song. Also, yes, this _is_ the song from Madagascar 2
Bass line from Night Court TV show. Bass line from Seinfeld. Bass line from any Oingo Boingo song. Dead Man's Party is good. yes I know those last two werent' technically recorded on bass guitars, but they still sound great.
Hey! Thank you for this awesome video! As an advanced bass-player, I would definetly add "Music of the mind" by Jamiroquai. Not only because it helps you practise slides (with your pinkie), but also it has that "Samba" part with lots of ghost notes, where you have to play very precise and fast. Moreover, you study to strech your hand, which then helps you fretting more notes on your fretboard. 😊
This is so good! I'm a beginner and bass is my first instrument. This channel helped me through so much on my first days and now I just learned to slap and pop on my 2nd week. Thank you so much.. your videos helps me ALOT and others who wants to learn! Just amazing.
I grew up playing the cello at a young age, self taught myself the bass after graduating high school. I’ve always played one finger per fret like you would play a cello. It was just natural to me.
You should leave affiliate links for things even if they suck. Patrick Boyle runs a finance channel and he hilariously put affiliate links things for fake products that suck. It's assumed 0 people clicked any of them, but ya never know.
I never realized it until you stated it, but yeah the bass and the vocals do match up really well. You get to appreciate both at the same time; they are not fighting each other even though both are excellent. I guess the trick to having something sound awesome is to have two awesome things happening at once. A lot of Led Zeppelin songs have the drums and guitar doing something similar.
The more live footage I watch of him, the more impressed I am by his perfect professionalism. He is the very defenition of a working musician and master of his craft. He’s like a fisherman or electrician who’s been at it so long that he’s seen everything. Watching him work makes it all seem so easy. But try to do it yourself and you’ll realize quickly how wrong you are.
My hand isn't big enough to get my thumb on the 3rd fret G for Billie Jean! Might be possible on a short scale bass but I like my P bass too much to change.
A setup is $20-$30? Oh no, my luthier ripped me off, but he's the only one nearby, so whatever. Anyway, getting a cheap one set up and getting new strings is a valid option. It's still the hardest one to play (compared to my Yamaha) since the neck is so far out, but I do still play it, and it has a unique sound. One thing I don't often hear in setups is about screwing the bridge in tighter - with a bass the whole instrument vibrates, you don't want bits vibrating that aren't supposed to. I guess it's only an issue with cheap basses though xD
There are a lot of knockoff brands at the second hand shops here. I used to have one called "Brian" ---it had a Fender headstock and a Stingray body. I liked it, but eventually swapped it for an actual Jazz bass... ;)
I switched to bass because guitarists are dime a dozen and my church needed a bassist. I borrowed a cheap Yamaha 4-string for a solid 2 months and loved bass. My first official was a 5-string Ibanez with one double hambucher and 2 knobs. My favorite bands uses 5-strings. 5 years later, I got a 6-string Ibanez with 2 active humbuchers and 4 knobs. Love the wide range of things I can do with both. The moral is like he said, start low (not fall apart cheap), or borrow.
the advice for Hysteria about imagining the drum part is so important. my biggest skill jump probably came when I was able to feel the beat in what I was playing
Maybe it's just my crappy work laptop but the voice audio is WAY louder than the bass. I couldn't turn it up too loud (I'm at work) so I didn't hear any of the bass lines. Maybe use an acoustic bass, or plug it in for the next video.
Interesting list! It contained some songs I didn't see coming. I thought for sure that Longview by Green Day would make the list. It has worked really well, and you can dumb it down a little and still have it sound impressive to "normal people"
I love that you make the distinction that non-musicians listen to music completely differently than musicians. I wish there was more conversation around this.
