Matthew is a filmmaker/musician/writer based in Dallas, TX who watched his first The Twilight Zone rerun as a kid in the 90's and his life has never been the same since.
On any given day you could catch him enjoying the contemplative minimalism of Akerman's Jeanne Dielman or the manic maximalism of Obayashi's House. Probably the same day.
Never seen a short horror film before, this was really good! Judging by the dope instruments in the background, I'm also assuming you did the scoring, which was also great.
List is INCREDIBLY BASED Especially the inclusion of the underrated We’re All Going to the World’s Fair Added Strawberry Mansion to the watchlist You should watch Marcel the Shell if you haven’t. Essential watch, and gentle, and funny, and very human. Btw: What film of yours would you recommend I watch? 🧡
Thanks man! Yeah, more people need to see and love both those movies… I know! I really do. I just need to space it out because I’m still recovering from Aftersun 😂 I’d say probably GOBY or HEIST? I feel like they kinda show the two extremes of what I’ve done so far. Thanks for asking!
Beautiful job! If you shot this on actual film, I really applaud you. Even if you didn't this is still beautiful film. I love the slow cinema movement. I came across slow cinema while watching a video on RU-vid about it. I got to say this was really amazing. LOVE the shots! I'm a true sucker for art house films so fantastic job on this film! Keep it up!
Wow, I really appreciate that, man! And, alas, no, I wish I had the budget to shoot film. This was shot on my phone actually, then I spent a bunch of time attempting to craft a loving homage to that kinda of 16mm texture in post and grading. Some day though, hopefully! And glad to hear from another slow cinema lover! Honestly just amazed anyone has found this at all, I really thought maybe 2 people would be interested. Thank you so much for spending the time to watch it!
really great work! i was curious about the actual technical specs and the editing; was this shot entirely on an iphone and edited using filmic pro? or did you use a dslr? the shot composition and color grading are genuinely gorgeous
Yeah, I shot it completely on my iPhone using FilmicPro, then I spent forever messing around in post to get the visual layers all right. Thank you so much!!
the ending made the hairs at the back of neck stand up. watched it twice still trying to figure out the meaning. interruption is an ongoing theme, my first thought was tech was the cause but the person ringing door bell disproves that. and she is also using the laptop to create music. i love the lighting, sound and the sequences. why the odyssey? any correlation to Odysseus' long journey home. AND WHY DOESN'T SHE ANSWER? the question is driving me insane, i swear. lol but don't tell me.
Great! The fact that you put so much in 12 min is outstanding. It prolly was not as easy as it looks. The alien being caught is visually satisfying, my fav part of the film. Although the sound was top tier, I felt like it was on through out the film, even when nothing spooky was goin' on. I really loved it, a true addition to the scifi genre, I can't wait to see more.
Very sick work my man. Especially love the framing and the shot of the camera rushing through the tree line. Awesome sound too. I hope that the festivals dig it
You have some great shots in this short film. 1:01 and 2:19 stuck out to me, especially the latter. The second to last shot of you emerging from the shadows reminded me of a scene in Lost Highway where Bill Pullman's character walks around his house.
Dude! YES. I feel like everything I make I have Lost Highway somewhere there in my subconscious. I definitely was channeling Persona in this one, too. Anyway. Thanks you so much!
This was fun. Enjoyed the academy ratio, color grade, and the story reminded me a bit of a creepier version of Nolan’s Doodlebug. The score was my favorite aspect.
Hey Matthew, follow you on Letterboxd, saw you made a short film, figured I'd check it out. Love the use of music and the lighting that particularly complements the black and white style. All in all I'm always happy to see people creatively output, :) keep going.
