His piano playing was no joke, either. Between sets at the Jazz Showcase - and only because I was late that night - I heard Griffin at the piano in the outer lobby play his composition "A Monk's Dream", fully harmonized in block chord style. Shortly after, as they took the stage for the second set, Griff asked his band what they wanted to play. Kenny Washington said "The J.A.M.F.s Are Coming". Griffin told us the Paris inspiration for his tune and what his title really meant, and they were off to the races! Since it is hard to find the latter tune on You Tube here is the former:
Coltrane and Cherry a match made in heaven but he'd already played with Miles Davis on Kind of Blue. This is a straight blues progression in C. Common as it gets, but this is ground breaking jazz.
