Thanks so much for that -- loved it. To bad I never had a chance to see your band -- I did see Harley Bray once when he was in that band Red Cravens and the Bray Brothers and 516 Main Street. And it seems to he moved to Columbus Ohio too but I never met him when I was there.
@barrybrower

To my knowledge he never lived in Ohio. He and Shera moved to Washington from Illinois in early 1980s. But I will ask him next time I talk with him.

So good - thanks so much for posting that gem! Used to exchange emails with the Williams back in the 1990s. Never got the chance to meet them. Are the still with us on this old earth? Those were the days. Are you playing Phil's Loar?
@barrybrower
@barrybrower 2 месяца назад
Sadly, both Phil and Vivian have passed. Phil in 2017, and Vivian last year. Miss them a lot! No, not Phi's Loar, it’s a mandolin that Stan Miller made in 1986 which I no longer own. It was (is) a good mandolin.

Absolutely! The sad thing is this applies to _a lot_ of recordings/performances in this genre. Laurel was made aware of your remark, and is appreciative.

Not only is the singing superb but Cliff is playing dobro and Laurel guitar. That's like Carter Stanley playing banjo while Ralph plays guitar. An event! Maybe if "kept clean" was changed to "kept green" (which is what they sing) another 3 people will watch.
@barrybrower
@barrybrower 4 месяца назад
@@banjrsolo I think “kept clean” is the original lyric. Laurel’s a stickler about such matters…🤓
@banjrsolo
@banjrsolo 4 месяца назад
@@barrybrower "Clean" is from the Blind Lemon Jefferson song. "One kind favor etc" The Carter's song is "Green". It's that way on the Carter Family 78s and reissues and it's that way in print on the back cover of Old Pal. Track 10. Thank you for posting this video on RU-vid.
@barrybrower
@barrybrower 4 месяца назад
@@banjrsolo if I recall correctly, and I’ll ask Laurel about it, she originally did it as “green” because of the Carter version. But then I think she found out it was written by Jefferson and changed to clean. I’ll double check that with her. By the way, do I know you?

Yes, per @skotg406, Harley passed on. I was at the memorial and we played some tunes for him, told stories (there were lots to tell :)), and generally gave him a good send-off. He's a legend in these parts!

Sorry Folks, Here with the sad news. Harley Passed Sept 21, 2024. After suffering with some health issue over the last few years. His Memorial was Saturday 3/9/24 in Everett Wa. Beautiful time, with some great pickers hanging out and picking, and swapping stories. His grandson brought his banjo, the mandolin Harley's father had made when Harley was a kid, and also the mandolin Harley made himself.

Great song! After hearing the Country Gentlemen cover this song in the 60s or 70s, I discovered the version put out in 1936 by The Blue Sky Boys. Cliff & Laurel did a real nice job presenting it too.

In the state of West Virginia among the peaceful rolling hills There I met a mountain maid with eyes of blue Golden hair so soft and curly and her lips were like the dew She was the queen of West Virginia and her name was Linda Lou Linda Lou my Linda Lou can’t you hear me calling you Calling like a lonesome dove my Linda Lou When the moon is in the blue and the stars are shining too Can’t you hear my lonely heart calling for you Linda Lou I recall the night I met her how I held her hand in mine I recall the night we kissed and bid adieu Many miles may separate us if I should cross the ocean blue My heart is still in West Virginia with my darling Linda Lou

Great traditional bluegrass act! Time is filled with swift transition Naught of earth unmoved can stand Build you hopes on things eternal Hold to God’s unchanging hand Hold to God’s unchanging hand Hold to God’s unchanging hand Build your hopes on things eternal Hold to God’s unchanging hand Trust in Him who will not leave you What so ever years may bring If by earthly friends forsaken Still, more closely to Him cling When your journey is completed When the valley you pass through Fair and bright the home in glory Your enraptured soul will view

@barrybrower

Thank you for your interest and questions: Phil & Vivian Williams performed for many years in the State of Washington, in various groups, but never in any group called "Williams." There was a Michigan group that used to perform as "The Williams Family," but that is unrelated. The banjo is a 5-string, and Laura played it in oldtime frailing style.

Just wonderful! - brought back memories of when Rose performed in London (UK) round about 1990. She was superb, and the audience loved her. I was honoured to be asked to play banjo in the (bluegrass) band which backed her, and it was a terrific experience: due to time constraints, we had only a half-hour to rehearse for a two-hour show, but we all knew her bluegrass album and quite a lot of her other songs. After three numbers she started taking requests, which could have been an ordeal by fire, but she was perfect: in the rehearsal she had shown us her hand-signals for chord changes, and she conducted the band right through each number, without dropping her concentration on her fans for a second. She had worked with many pick-up bands, and was completely at home on-stage. An unforgettable experience ... Very many thanks for putting this on youtube

Finding this song and the Johnson Mountain Boys singing it was a TRUE blessing for me. Just this morning I was doing my devotional reading and came upon a scripture verse that said, "sing a NEW song unto the Lord." That made me wonder. Then I found this on the Tube. It's going into my Gospel book as fast and I can type it up and learn it. Thanx for the posting.
