Hi, my name is Michayla and I love to learn! A self-proclaimed nerd and research enthusiast, I am passionate about education, so much so that I started my own school in south Atlanta because I realized that there were children who were slipping through the cracks and now I work with parents as they navigate homeschooling. I homeschool my own children and have a marvelous time doing so!
My heart with this vlog is to share about education, learning and parenting tips, and to help parents navigate the often confusing world of school when it comes to their children. I bring my years of experience in teaching in many different settings, along with working with children for over 30 years.
Hello , I have a question. You said that the school cost you 300 a month per student but the website says that is only costs 31 and some change. What am I missing?
The commentor above said that Acellus Academy (not Power Homeschool) can cost close to $300/month/student. The creator of this video @LearningLifeMB did say that Power Homeschool is about $25/month/student. It is actually currently $31.25/mo unless you do the Roger Billings Scholarship opportunity, which would make in $19.95/mo instead, which seems like a very worthwhile opportunity.
As someone who was unschooled his ENTIRE life, I think I can tell you pretty confidently: you're letting your children down. Please, don't ruin your children's lives the same way my parents did mine. Either give them a proper homeschooling experience by following an actual curriculum standard, requiring frequent interactions with other closed-aged children, encouraging personal talents / hobbies / interests, and much more; or send them to public school where they'll receive access to proper education, socialization, and resources.
Thank you for your comment. I do take my children's education seriously. We adapt each year and add curriculum as necessary. They also have a lot of social interaction with other children and daily opportunities to pursue hobbies and interests. I am sorry that you didn't have the best experience for you.
I am not fully sure it is a methodology issue but rather it hasn't been taught in a way that people remember. I also think there is an aspect of laziness when it comes to writing and not being bothered to use the correct one. Autocorrect is not always our friend.
I scored %100 on intrapersonal intelligence test. I wish I knew how to develop this intelligence in my younger years. I wouldn't be a uber driver at 45, instead, I'll be a surgeon. But , I am grateful that I discovered this type of intelligence. I'm definitely not going to restart school at my age and become a surgeon, instead, im going back to become an APRN anad work in aesthetics and cosmetic nursing.
This reminds me about the time I asked a speech path friend why so many kids need a speech path. She told me that many don’t. She explained that we all have strengths & weaknesses & that many of the kids just have different strengths & the kids would get caught up on their own. We don’t need our kids to excel at every subject to be moving forward toward the goal. This was a good video. I would like to see more parents develop a love for books in their children before giving them tech. I’ve seen even 1-yr-olds can be indifferent to books if they are used to TV & video games.
Is tactile and kinestetic the same type of learning? I get confused as some research say kinestetic like to move and tactile like to touch things but not nessery move.
They are not fully the same. Kinesthetic are whole body learners - so the doing, touching, moving. A tactile learner does like to touch things but doesn't always have to be moving. In my view a kinesthetic learner is also tactile, but a tactile isn't necessarily kinesthetic.
I wish I had had a teacher like you growing up! I would love to do this with my son. He is a teen and loves ants. Other than incorporating Geography (Where different species lived), do you have any other ideas? Or good unit studies/curriculums evolving around ants? Also, he is amazing at science! For my daughter, she isn't as focused in on anything particular. She doesn't exactly enjoy learning anything nor does she get stuck on any one subject. She's more about getting everything done quickly (not deep dives). She is in middle school & is constantly listening to music. Curriculums, unit studies, or ideas?
Thank you for your comment. For your son - check out Teachers Pay Teachers. You can find some good ant unit studies on there for really low cost. There will also be some other great science units. If I were to do one, I would look at ants around the world, the different kinds of ants and how they function, comparisons between different ants, how they are important to the eco-system and what would happen if we didn't have ants. For your daughter, maybe a way to get her involved is to do a unit study on music. What are the different styles of music? How did we end up with rhythms and blues/jazz/hip hop/ etc.? Music around the world - instruments, style, etc. How does music make you feel? How can we incorporate music and art? Something like that.
Hello ma'am, You are my inspiration. I want to learn more of music. I want to restart my carrier again so I joined a STTA course. I want give one presentation about music corner with instruments. Can you pl help me our for that if you are not busy.
My son is 7 and has been in Montessori school since he was 5 and he's autistic. He's very smart and struggles with social skills. He needs prompts to do his work, initiate anything, but he's above average in reading and excellent in Math (2 to 3 grades above his level). I still struggle with knowing if Montessori is the right choice because I think he might need more structure. But he responds well to the style of to teaching as it's a very tactile and visual. Do you think Montessori is a good fit for someone like this? Thank you for any thoughts.
Sorry for the delay in replying. I get why you are wondering if it might be the best fit. If he needs more structure and prompts to do his work, as he gets older he might not get all he needs in a Montessori setting - based on how they work. It is nothing against them or him, just different styles and needs. It be worth talking to his teachers about this.
I'm starting to incorporate little teachings here and there with my toddler right now, and I found that she doesn't like learning when it sounds boring. She wasn't retaining anything. However, when I started being more animated, she actually listened, took interest, followed my instructions, AND retained the information taught! I was very surprised. Then she likes to copy me and be the teacher to teach me something else. 😂 Thanks for sharing your experience and tips.
Monday we do Moving beyond the page. 20 min mixed La, Ss, S and 20 min maths rest of the week Children choose a stick from the jar. Whatever they choose 20 min each. So we have many different days. And can fit in all the electives without overwhelme. We had a dining table which is not in use. So I put single player games on them. Like Smart games and BambinoLuk, sticker by number etc. They can complete whenever they want. There is never dust on them :) Also everyone choose a book which they read to me and I choose a poetry book we memorize from. Lot of sport clubs and life skills:)
My son does Ignite Christian Academy, we really do love it but I’ve been looking into switching him to monarch for highschool just because of the price difference…aside from that it seems as the 2only major differences between the two is that ICA has more live resources such as teachers/tutors for each subject and you get a regular school issued diploma and transcripts..I wonder how easy the switch would be for us, I mainly worry about math as I am very hands on with helping my son with all subjects and I struggle with math, he really needs a teacher for that subject. Ugh, so many options
Gorgeous , i have a lot of can use in my household with dogs and cats. This made me think of doubling up the kitty cat food cans with fabric in between both! Wind gets wild here so i think making holes to loops the fabric there w and for the holder would work better ! Certainly tacky glue can work for certain climates !! What are your experiences with wind ?
to any student who have a say in what they learn about DO NOT do the family and consumer science unless you wanna answer super intrusive question which reminder your teacher/parent will read i chose it thinking "Hey thats like cooking and stuff" but nope cooking's like 5% of it and now i"m stuck staring at questions like "WhAt StReNgTh Do YoU sEe In OtHeRs Do YoU wIsH yOu HaD" the whole thing is basically a trap into a mental asylum considering most home schoolers have a crappy lonely life where parents throw crap at you and expect you to learn and have a happy life without anybody your age to be friends with and in most cases tore you away from the friends and life you did have but you know "home schoolers are smarter and happier" yet we have no clue how to talk to people i've legit had panic attacks trying to talk to someone at a front desk but we are "So PrEpArEd FoR liFe"
I’m so sorry that this has been your experience, that’s not how it’s supposed to be. I was homeschooled and my family was involved in lots of social opportunities.
I love the Making good choices seria. Because after reading the beginning kids decide what will happen and they see the result and we can talk about it If they make a bad decision it is easier to just turn the page and make a better decision. For critical thinking, tolerance, character building and to reduce stress about common situations before it's come up.
ive used time4 learning for 6 yrs and have come to realize its garbage and im changing this year. my question to you would be what online school programs actually have teacher support????
ngl i dont think it will work most of the time with kids being so immature and brain rotted most of the time so scolding them is enough to straighten them up if they dont behave after getting told it a few times
You are fantastic! I stumbled upon your page while seeking information for online curriculums for my new to-homeschooling sons and me. Thank you for your insight and phenomenal approach toward making a concern into something much more relatable and hopeful.
@@srayec.7741 I think that it would work, as you can set your own pace and only move forward when it's right for your child. You can pick the grade level too. To me, being able to homeschool and tweak curriculum for a child with learning issues is wonderful. You don't have to do all the activities or you can limit how much they have to do for each one. I like masterbooks and it could work, if you're willing to go through and make the adaptations you need.
I just started my two oldest with Mia and they both LOVE it. I will say that without the PDFs (which we use with every class) the material is a bit light, so I recommend doing the paper work and if needed, reinforce with videos or further instruction from you. I took us about 3 days to get into the rhythm of things, but overall I give this a thumbs up. Before this they did two years in Connections Academy and two years with the good and the beautiful. Connections really stressed my daughter out with the tests and projects, and it was definitely a bit intense for my son who was only in kindergarten when we started. Now, the good and the beautiful was a much better fit for us, but it can take a lot of time if you want to teach this properly, particularly the history and science portions. I think for us Mia is a happy middle at the moment. I hope they can have the best experience possible.
My daughter is in Tk and we are not happy with her class placement. She is high functioning and has mild cerebral palsy. They couldn’t find an inclusive classroom she’s segregated from the mainstream kids. I feel her day is too long 8:15-1:30 and it’s M-F. Drop off have been so hard. She clings to my leg 😢 and cries.
@@Moss_Pillows I'm so sorry you're experiencing that. It's a long day for sure, esp when she's not in the right placement for her. I hope you can get it changed and that it will bring you peace.
U just got a key thing wrong. Yes the family is the first instance of socialisathion and builds the foundation. BUT its ONLY the foundation. A child learns a lot more in school than just math and stuff. Kids need to have interaction with peers. Ofc there is a difference between just hanging out and a place like the school, where they are with other kids and sth like discipline. Plus the school has sth that u call the hidden plan in social science. This hidden plan includes things as inside jokes, memes, games and interest and in general the zeitgeist of your own generation. Its rly selfish in a way saying your kid doesnt need these things. But anyway as a swiss person this is one of the most american videos ive ever seen 😂 i came across this video because im writing a paper about socialisation of homeschool kids for uni. P.s. im not writing this to say you are a bad mom or anything but rather to let you know that u got a key thing about socialisation in schools wrong. Peers are essential for a propper socialisation of a kid
@@LDEtheReal I get what you're saying, but I also come at this as having been raised in schools, been a classroom teacher for years in a number of countries, and am not American. I have actually seen that the socialization of homeschoolers in the last decade (when done right, as in the parents don't isolate) to be better than what is available in schools. Not just in my daughters but others around us and especially in light of how schools are geared these days (esp in America but looking at the global trend). I think it's great you're doing a paper on this subject. I encourage you to talk to homeschool families and see what they are doing for their children and peer interaction.
