I have been in this business for 18 years,four years on hiatus,I am currently trying to start out on my own,I have some equipment that can get through till I can upgrade,I am mobile and can do house calls,I started abfb page and have many references and loads of pictures in my portfolio…I need to get more clients as most of my original clients have since passed I feel like I’m at ground zero and don’t have an ideas of where to go now…lost!!
I can relate. I am a Pet Stylist/Groomer as well. And because my hair was breaking off in the back. I did not know what to do with it. I finally came to realize it needed to be cut for healthy new growth. I decided to try an Afro. I am African- American. I prayed and asked for guidance from God my Heavenly Father. And with the little stains of long hair I had left(relaxed hair) and 2 inches of new growth of unpermed hair he said you can shape it like you do a Poodles topknot! It turned out perfect! He reminded me I already had scissoring skills from grooming.😂
How do you keep shampoos and conditioners warm or how do you warm them up? The only solution that has worked for me is to add hot water to cold shampoo or conditioner to warm it up. Do you have a better solution?
Dog groomer here! Most people don’t have the best control over their dog on a retractable leash! During check-in they’re not locked on a safe length. (Unsafe would be past 3 feet from their owner where they could easily get close to other dogs who may not be dog friendly) That’s usually exactly what happens when we’re discussing the appointment details and their dog is behind them half way out the store! I think they’re okay for small dogs. Medium and Big dogs I think are much better on non retractable.
It comes down to responsible breeding. Plus how much purchasing power is in the environment. They are popular for a reason. They are smart. Mostly hypoallergenic. Good with childen. Medium energy. I've trained harder dogs. And helped my aunt with her doodle. They are amazing dogs. The main issue is with breeding.

Hi Savannah from Nova Scotia, I had to respond after seeing your video as I think what worked for my dog will also work for Gracie. Briefly, 3 or 4 days after being in Vetmedin, Willa ( my then 13 yr old Jack Russell) started peeing in my bed and inside. I thought about the drug acting as a diuretic for her heart, so it kind of made sense. Then wondered what other things might be contributing to this. I knew for me that after eating potato chips or any other salty food, I had more trips to the washroom. I started researching salt content in her food, treats and then other brands, but they all had quite a bit of sodium - and the vet brands were expensive and didn’t have much substance. I remembered Hilary Watson’s book Complete & Balanced which is a recipe book for Dogs (I think she has one for cats too) and you can get the companion supplement that you stir into the cooked recipes. It is brilliant, and within 3 days, Willa had no more accidents inside. I always gave her her pills rolled in a thin piece of Walmart Swiss cheese slice with another little piece as a chaser (my vet said that was ok) and it has far less salt than other cheeses. The food I make her has no salt. Her energy level has returned, she’ll be 15 in December and she’s a different dog. Very scary reading this. I used a mobile groomer once here in Florida and generator overheated. She grooms my two dogs one after another with a Honda 7000. Heat index is 199 degrees. I believe I will go back to taking my two dogs to a grooming business and stop the mobile groomer. Two dogs take over two hours and too much stress on the generator as well as myself. I am done
100% agree with you. I'm not a vet and I stay in my lane. A lot of customers don't like hearing that I don't offer anal gland expression, even after explaining why. All they care about is not paying the vet because groomers offer it for free.
Last time I had my toy poodle groomed she got cut in 2 places on her face. I took her to a place where we have been taking our dogs for years. What upset me is that they didn’t tell me.
Thanks for this article. Not many Groomers post anything about injuries. Can u possibly talk about tongues being cut too? Had a dog lick my thinning shears 😢 There seems to be a lot of misinformation about remedies for stopping bleeding. Found giving them icy cold water to lick helped the best.
Another thing to be clear about is what type of poodle is in the crossbreed. A standard poodle means it will be the size of a small pony which is A LOT of grooming!
Bag balm is amazing for cuts on pets and people...as well as large animals (what its meant for originaly) I may use tetracycline cream possibly for a bad wound or one in a dirtierplace like paws or eyes or nether regions...but i would stick to something thats not prescription and can be used by owners easily at home. (There are small tins available maybe having some on hand to hand out to a RARE client in a bad situation like this would be helpful to the client). Ive never seen such a big nick on a dog like the one in Your video...but im not a professional groomer....i do work with animals and have groomed dogs and cats and ive seen smaller nivks and cuts before from me and professional groomers.
I have a question. I've been a pet groomer for 20 years. I had my own business 5 years ago. I took time off from it for about 4 years. My husband passed away in Feb 2024. Now I am opening back up. Before I didn't have anyone sign a release form, but now I have the forms. Do you recommend clients signing one? Please let me know what you do or think. Thank you so much. Oh!
