The most important thing when you're dealing with a disk injury is not do anything that causes more referral or radiation of pain down your leg this is true with every activity including sleeping. With sleeping most patients when they first injure a disc will need to move around quite frequently to find a more comfortable position some will start in their bed others will go on to the floor in a yoga mat but typically firmer surfaces are better. As to which side it will typically only matter if you are shifted so if you're standing in front of a mirror and you see your torso shifting to one side or the other then I would suspect that laying on the side that you not shifted to would be better, but mattress firmness will play a role.
