I must say this is a fantastic video lesson, thanks Dan. First, the way you present the contents is very creative. I wonder how did you do that. I saw you had a laptop at top of the keyboard to project lead sheets but I don’t know how you put that and your performance together. Brilliant, indeed. I got your key points of common chords progression of Jazz repertoires. I do have two requests for you to consider for future tutorial lessons i.e. “My Funny Valentine”, and “New York, New York”. I love “Skylark” which you had introduced back in 2020. By the way I love Ms. Linda Ronstadt sung the song. You said “Very easy to play so why not give it a go?” And, I did. It is a very nice exercise.👍😀

Thank you Dan for the lesson on “Moonlight Serenade” (Key of “F major”). You always make it seemingly very simple. I love the song. I still have my old score or lead sheet. I had marked two floating 2-5-1s’ on ^6 (Eb, A7(#5), D7(b9)) and on ^2 etc. thus making it sound nice with a bit of emotion. I hope you will do the 2nd part of this tutorial. Also, I hope you don’t mind performing the whole song as you did on the previous video lesson dated back February 4, 2018. You did a splendid performance. Much appreciated, Dan. 👍🥰

The one that i learned like this that showed me jazz songs are all easy progressions was "Emily"....the bridge never made sense to me until i broke it down into a 1-6-2-5 on the 6th.

Thanks for the video Dan. Beautiful chords. So pleased I can now play by numbers and chords instead of relying on sheet music. So sad for piano players who lose their eyesight and can no longer play as they can't read music. I see this at aged care homes. 6 2 5 1 is very useful! You've taught me a lot. Thank you.

I know how to do it too...but you've got a digital keyboard...and one of those keys is easiest to play the piece in...just set up the transpose function and leave it active. lol. The easiest way to find the relative minors is just go down a minor 3rd and use that reference note...easier to think down a minor 3rd than up a major 6th.

Wow, thanks Dan for another nice chord dissection of Section B of “All The Things You Are” where 2-5-1 progression appears over and over except on different keys like G, E,Eb, and C (Section B). I would very much like for you to give few options of “In-tro and Out-tro” when you do the Section C. You are right about Jazz lead sheets. I have two lead sheets on the same song and the same key (Ab) and yet, particularly on endings they are quite different. Personally I prefer ending of AbM7- (Gm7b5 - C7b9) rather than (Emaj9 - C7(b9)aug) which sounds so dissonant. Much appreciated for the all three sections for a lovely song by Jerome Kern. 👍👍

Thanks a lot! I don't have repertoire at my fingertips from those composers so I'd have to spend ages learning stuff, which I'm not too enthusiastic to do to be honest! Their music is of course very score-centric and I'm not lol... all I can say is to study the scores of the pieces you like, away from the piano, a few bars at a time but don't go to the piano until you can play the notes of both hands in your mind... then when you're at the piano, don't take the score with you, just play what you've internalised. You'll get through pieces very quickly and know them very well this way!

Aye (Yes), I thought the video lesson is rather interesting. I tried your numbers i.e. “7,5,9,8,& 3” or “F#/Gb, D#/Eb, G#/Ab, G, and D”, then I choose key of “Eb” since two of the three flats of “Eb” are there. The chord progression turns out as “m3-M7-M7-m7-°7” or “Gb-Eb-Ab-G-D”. It sounds kind of different (non-diatonic). Thanks Dan for this inspiring game. 👍👍
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 10 дней назад
Yes, it gives interesting results but also trains you to recognise new chord progressions. Of note: in my video, I accidentally identified 5 as Eb; it is E (chromatically from C). I just didn't count far enough. Oops! However, good chord choices. Thanks for paying the game! Best, Dan

I am a novice at piano, and am able to play chords if i think about the notes and can somewhat read sheet music (Its slow but im in choir and a good bit of music theory (chord shapes, modes and solfege) ) would you reccomend me just looking up songs sheet music and learning them to improve my hand skills and speed in reading sheet music or what other method should I use to improve my piano.
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 10 дней назад
Hey, thanks for watching and for your comment. I've always, since my very early days, been of the mind that you sight-reading is a bit of a party trick and doesn't actually help you truly learn a piece. Staring at sheet music, even when you 'know' the piece, is a big distraction from actually performing (I call this 'conscious interference'). I always encourage people (and I do it myself) to master the chord progression (if jazz) or a few bars in one go, AWAY from the piano. You only go to the piano when you know you can play it in your mind. Of course, the first thing to do when learning a new piece (any genre) is to listen to an original and then many other versions. This solidifies the structure and helps with overall performance quality, plus you will TRULY know the piece inside out!
@SMTX2023
@SMTX2023 12 дней назад
I admire your performance on “All the Thing You Are” . Not only it sounds good but you also play the “Section A” seemingly effortlessly. Thanks, Dan. I love the song and definitely will learn to play. You are right the first 8 bars playing key of Ab (4 flats) with 6-2-5-1-4, and 5,1 on ^3 (G7, CM7), and the next 8 bars either going on the same key (Ab) or transposing to other key like Eb (3 flats). The chord progression remains the same as 6-2-5-1-4 and 5-1 on ^3 (D7, GM7). I like the way you dissect the section A. I hope your will continue the analysis on Part 2 or/and Part 3 etc. Much appreciated, Dan. 👍👍

Perhaps you missed the part where I say you choose your own chord types in this exercise so nothing is diatonic, at least on purpose, but you can if you want do it that way…. But it’s a bit boring because it’s so predictable! My Gm chord was a half diminished…. The F# also is wrong diatonically, as are all the rest! 😎 Mix it up!
