I think, they missed the opportunity to do a very good studio album. It all sounds like a demo record, not well produced. So, it's sad. The content is enjoyable, but the production lacks, especially after "Talk"
Not on the album version of TBII - that was Alan Rickman, because Stanshall had drunkenly fallen out with Oldfield at the time. But VS was the original MC on the original TB.
I'll probably shell out on Nursery Cryme again having bought all this stuff time and time again over the last 45 years. Only because this time it appears to be released on the pink scroll label as it was in 1971. Pointless i know but hey-ho
Good review man sparks are a great band a few crap albums lol but loads of great ones over 50+ years now. Appatently they have almost finished the follow up album set to be released in 2025 as well as another film. Hard working guys even at 76 and 79 [:
Right...what's the point of playing an instrument unless you can enjoy it on your own . Not unlike a hobby. I figure that the music I play is not commercially viable anyway so I'll just have to do what I always do by living in a fantasy world and never again be confined to playing music that I am not fond of just to please a narcissist band leader who wants control...and forces music making it contrived and so let them have their AI
Here is Genesis U.S. Billboard 200 chart results for the last two decades. Blue Box failed to chart. Red Box failed to chart. Green Box failed to chart. Turn It On Again Tour Edition failed to chart. Live Over Europe failed to chart. Live Box failed to chart. Vinyl Blue Box failed to chart. Vinyl Red Box failed to chart. Vinyl Green Box failed to chart. R-Kive failed to chart. The Last Domino? failed to chart. BBC Broadcasts failed to chart. 2023 reissue of the studio albums in digipaks failed to chart. Gee, they wouldn't want to give us something we haven't heard before would they? I want super deluxe editions with outtakes, demos, early rough mixes, work in progress tracks. I want blu-ray audio, coffee table book and memorabilia. I want my Genesis toys and trinkets just like Pink Floyd! Every other fucking band does this. Why not Genesis? They could even release this stuff as stand alone. Even worse, Phil Collins is releasing a deluxe version of Both Sides WITH NO NEW CONTENT! All the same shit he already put out in 2019. What was once on 2 CDs is being put on 5 LPs. No one is going to buy this shit. Pass me the vomit bag!
And that wouldn’t chart, so I’m not sure what your point is. Also, there was a big coffee table book back in 2007. And yes, I do own the autographed edition of that, thank you very much! 👍
@@TheDarrenLockThe point is super deluxe editions of individual albums are big business in the U.S. Pink Floyd, Kiss, Jethro Tull have recently charted with their sets. They just need to have some new content we haven't heard before. Most also have memorabilia included because they have to sell the fans something we don't already own. Just an extra incentive to buy it. Are you familiar with the Genesis Museum Exhibit Collector's Book? Not a band release but very well done. One of the best books ever. Not cheap but totally worth it.
Genesis were pretty economical with their recording sessions, so to produce deluxe editions to the level of Jethro Tull would be pretty hard for them. There have been many anniversaries that the band have missed, so I don’t see anything “new” coming and if it does it will be pretty half-arsed like the recent BBC Broadcasts box set. With the rights partially sold, it will be harder for them to do unless someone wants to do it. It’s hard to be optimistic about this. 🫤
@@TheDarrenLock I know it's hard to be optimistic. Obviously, Concord owns the post 1977 output so couldn't they do something for say Invisible Touch like The Police are doing for Synchronicity? The only thing missing from the Police set is an Atmos mix on blu-ray.
Weel, I hope that someday the entire Genesis discography will be reissued in the latest Jethro Tull's reissues format, with more unreleased yet outtakes (but are they?), live materials etc.
Well the band sold off the catalogue, so it would have to be someone very into the band behind that project. I can’t see anything other than a big generic box set happening.
If Tony Banks get involved they would have to remove the string sections and replace that with some new synthesizer bits... Intriguing news... There were a lot of left over track could make a great double album record.
Us boomers got the OGWT. The poor millennials and Gen Z get Later. Poor sods. What more can be said? Great band, Collins on top form and don't care if it's mono, stereo or the BBC CCTV version. I'll watch it.
@@TheDarrenLock Wow, i thought you might have used some BBC recording or one of those better sounding concerts released ! Brilliant work. Give me more !
Wow, so at 58, (I don’t smell like 🌳), but a true Gen + Prog nerd, I found the video spot on. I might buy something, just so Bezos can oil up his finger for you. Thank you mate. (PS: I get to use my UK vernacular. I was born in Harrogate. Ended up with full Citizenship (as well as American). I ended up with full UK citizenship as well as US Citizenship. I’m proud of both. The stars were aligned just right eh? ) Great job. I’ll be visiting from time to time. Keep up the fire lad. Keep it up. ❤
Oh I didn't mean you. I meant those other guys. The ones who don't subscribe. Everyone who follows me and adopts me as their benevolent dictator are obviously very fragrant, very handsome and ultra intelligent. Those other guys are LOSERS!
Hey, Darren! Really nice to see this! I’m not really sure if the “pseudo stereo mix” worked, but Brand X is a favorite of mine, and I’ve seen/heard much more inferior quality prints than this (audio distortion, and just sloppy stuff). This seemed much cleaner. Many thanks for posting it, it is surely an improvement to me. Prog on!
Their music has appeared in a number of movies, most notably "Malcolm" - an Australian movie from the 80s and "Oskar und Leni" a German movie from the 1990s. Their biggest hit was appearing in "Napoleon Dynamite". So yes, they are everywhere!
I think Stand up, Benefit and Aqualung are the best Jethro Tull-albums... I like these box sets. Seems to be a little more expensive this repress than the last repress was?
There was an excellent remix of Banks’ A Curious Feeling a few years ago which came out on Esoteric (did they also do his box set?) - I wonder if that lends the label a little more credence than some of the budget labels which FGTR has passed through? Hope so anyway.
They do a lot of stuff. For example, they worked through the Renaissance back catalogue rather nicely and have a Kevin Ayers box set coming later in the year. 👍
Please keep up the Genesis song analysis Darren! I cant wait to hear your interpretation of some of their more interesting lyrics-especially songs on The Lamb.
It didn't really get any traction... I thought more people might be into it, but nah...you know what RU-vid is like. If I can figure out a way of doing it without any effort, then I'll continue!!!
Missed opportunity and would rather them fix the problem with the 2007or 2008 reisiiue on the Lamb lies down on Broadway on which you skip to the Broadway melody of 1974 it still has later part of fly on the windshield and wish they would correct that like on the 1994 reissue of the Lamb lies down on Broadway were it does not have that problem when you skip to the Broadway melody of 1974 its just that insrumental part.
Well in this instance, Roger Waters clearly states that he wants “the Jews to go back to where they came from” - the sort of rhetoric you’re average racist would come out with. So scratch the surface and there’s usually a bigot underneath… 👍
Good news on the Tull box sets. They set the standard for reissues in my opinion. CDs and DVDs with unreleased music including usually concerts from the era of the album. Photos and interviews and notes. All in boxes that allow you to create a Tull library. All at a reasonable price. Long live Tull!
I'm not sure why people dislike the first Genesis album. I consider Revelation and Trespass to be basically the same band, and if you judge those two albums separately from any of the later releases, they both stand up on their own, so long as you are willing to be open to that hazy, dreamy, pastoral sonic space that they exist within. These albums are more successful as mood pieces than as pop albums, and I think it's more about suspending expectations than judging against an entire catalog. I actually get more replay value out of Revelation, because there are a lot of little interesting bits that I always forget about and rediscover on another listen. The naivete of the production adds to the charm, for me. Not many parallels to this one.
@@TheDarrenLock Yeah, they're a bit embarrassed of it, but as a listener, I just think of it as another artist, more or less, and enjoy it for what it is. Perhaps I'm biased because I was introduced to this album as a child, and found it quite endearing. The only Genesis albums I knew at the time were the first 4 records. Ant's Genesis had an honest innocence that was unique. Trespass to me is still "Ant's Genesis", but they've just matured and developed a fair bit. But after Ant left, a fair amount was lost, not unlike the Floyds after Barrett left.
If zero monies go to JKing then I’ll consider it. Have you seen the announcement of a repress of all the albums coming in Aug/Sep/Oct?? 2007 Nick Davis Remix/Remasters version.
Just wondering do you know where I can get the genesis live at wembley stadium 1987 on audio in full or a cd as I love this show and want to have the Audio as well as rhe full content on dvd
