Welcome to Sailing While One (s/v While One)! 30 years ago we started a family and raised 3 wonderful kids. Together, after working in tech collectively for over 50 years, we’ve decided it was time for our next chapter. So, we hung up our soldering irons, powered down our debuggers and left our lucrative jobs at Apple to pursue a lifelong dream of cruising and traveling. Come follow us as we learn how to navigate these life changes, ready ourselves and our boat, for our next While One loop of travel, exploration, adventure, family, love and friendship.

Despite what it seems on RU-vid, this cruising life is far from linear. We'll walk through everything it took to retire, move our lives from San Jose, CA to Florida and onto a boat. We'll also walk through the expenses of owning and equipping our 2021 Nautitech 46 Open for full-time cruising -- our style.

Hi, Peter, thanks for watching. I'm getting the feeling as if I might have offended you. I want you to know that I have absolutely no desire to offend anyone. I love Spanish Wells and have visited it several times since making this video. I love the people and love the island.. I understand, at least, high-level the history of the island....but am no expert. Best Regards.

How do you like your oxley sail?,I just got one I need to rig the boat for it still.

I love the sail. It really allows us to sail a lot more and turn the motors off more. It's a little bit of a challenge with only two people but, I sense we'll get better at socking and unsocking in time.

Love your videos I am currently weighing buying one of these it’s in my list comparing to the Seawind. Can you tell me what you guys paid when all is said and done? Hard to find detailed price info on the open 46. Also how are those exposed helm stations on long passages and in bad weather
@whileone
@whileone 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the kind comments. I’ll be happy to share our details but am not sure I should provide it here. Feel free to reach out on our email listed under the About/Contacts menu at www.svwhileone.com. Regarding the helm stations. Pros and cons for all designs, for sure. Usually on long passages, we’re inside the saloon or hang out in the cockpit. Since owning the boat, there was perhaps two times in which I would have preferred an enclosed helm station. Some have added enclosures and I’ve considered doing this as well. I like being able to get good visibility regardless of point of sail. The cockpit is very protected, IMHO.

Enjoyed the video. Although it seems incredible, I visited Spanish Wells as a teenager in 1965 to learn how to scuba dive at a now-extinct resort called Lloyds. I loved Spanish Wells, but due to generations of inbreeding some of the residents were, well, a bit weird. Everyone is named Pinder. Like several islands in the Abacos, Spanish Wells was settled in the 1700's by pro-British Americans who fled the USA after the revolution. The island is quite prosperous and well-maintained.
@whileone
@whileone 5 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for the details on Spanish Wells. I’m a little surprised by just how many people are interested in Spanish Wells. We made it back there again about 3 weeks ago and I’ll be creating an updated video on Spanish Wells. The people are so nice and it’s very beautiful there…it feels utopian to me. Thanks for watching!

I've been afraid of the ocean for many years now. But this small clip looked so inviting. I suppose it's because the waters are calm. Please record more. 🙋

Yeah, today is a pretty calm day. We wouldn’t be beating into the wind if it were not. Gotta have respect for the Ocean, for sure, but I find it so peaceful to be getting from point A to point B using the wind. Sailing at night is super special as well, without all of the light pollution. Thanks for commenting!

Hi there, your titles and videos suggest that you own a Parasailor, which you do not. Parasailor is a sail brand of ISTEC. ISTEC also produces the Parasail (no OR) as a light wind alternative. The main difference is that the Parasailor has a wing with air chambers and the Parasail has not. Both 2004 ISTEC designs were copied by Oxley and marketed as something new. The Levante you have purchased does not have air chambers in its wing and is therefore the copy of the Parasail and NOT a Parasailor. Cheers
@whileone
@whileone 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the education! Not sure where I must have gotten the terminology from but I probably just blindly followed it. I will update the title!
@Bomarine
@Bomarine 8 месяцев назад
@@whileone You're welcome. Next time when you are sailing downwind and want to douse your Levante, you could try tightening one lee sheet and easing the tack line on the other side. That way you make a makeshift new luff leech close to your ship and make it easier for yourself to douse it. Just easing the sheets will make it fly pretty far forward before it collapses.. Cheers

Super informative!!! I do have a question? Which you may not have the answer for.... When you have to switch the star link to offshore and pay by the GB used.. It confuses me only because I wouldn't have a clue how much a half hour show or a movie was actually using data wise ..Is there a way to keep tabs on your offshore usage so you don't get that extra 500$ bill surprise? Thanks
@whileone
@whileone 9 месяцев назад
Thanks, S/V Thirteen Winds for the question. I’m not sure, exactly, how much a 1/2 hour show is…1/2 hour of a RU-vid video is about 3GB, I believe. I suspect that, depending on what device you’re consuming the video on that the provider scales the content data rate. Regarding checking your data usage. The app or the website lags. i’m guessing it lags 12 to 24 hours which makes it pretty ineffective to meter your usage. Ideally, you should download your content at anchor and only turn on mobile priority when needed. The app and website will work, even offshore…or at least it does for us most of the time…but one time we wanted to turn on but were unable to for some reason.

Wow, it lights up the night sky as if it was sunrise. I live in Central Europe, and Falcon-9 launches are sometimes visible here too: if the launch happens at sunset time, trajectory is eastbound and the sky is cloudless, then approx. 45 minutes after liftoff we can see the second stage flying through the night sky. But watching it that close must be awesome.

I’ve got about 4 or 5 more videos to finish up last year and then will begin 2023/2024. Once we return in April, 2023 from Cupertino, we had some friends visit us and we headed further south in the Exumas. It wasn’t long before we needed to start make our way back up north to Virginia to store the boat for hurricane season. This year, we decided to do more of the Bahamas because frankly, with working and all, we really just didn’t get to explore as much as we wanted. We’re talking about the following year and possibly heading further south into the Caribbean…and perhaps not make the trip back north…but who knows
