In 2020, at age 59 and about 27 years off the dirt, my son CJ convinced me to get back in the woods. I haven't looked back since! In my younger days I was a decent "B" rider and rode an 87 DR200 last. I did pretty good in enduro and harescambles on that bike even taking a 10th overall in an enduro. CJ and I have been joined by his twin boys, Nolan and Logan, making us one of the only three generation teams out there! One day we will all get on the podium at the same event....
CJ and the boy's videos can be found here: ru-vid.com/show-UCThOWxxiRN1oSkDCqJXbQjg
A little more on my background, I started working in the motorcycle biz in 1977 as a mechanic at a large dealership. I worked my way up and eventually became a Suzuki dealer in 1986. That didn't fare too well and I went to work for one of my competitors. From the mid 80's until the early 2000's we did motorcycle drag racing. I am still the record holder for 1000cc 8 valve nitrous injected bikes (B/AN).
@@alchrisr01...You earned a Sub ! I think im going to cut my bead breaker and weld about an inch long extension on it so it will be long enough to push the tire off the rim.
For me it helps. I have tendonitis in my right arm and gorilla gripping makes it hurt bad. I don't get that too much with the countershox. I did get a little at the 6hr race but it was very brief.
I just don't have any corners left!😁 I actually have a drum I use to do a tire change and can do it waaaay faster than this. I just wanted to show the Harbor Freight tool in this video. Thanks for watching.
It takes so much longer to change a tire when you are trying to make a video......back in the old days I could do it in a bout 3 minutes. Hope to see you at the races soon.
Sorry for almost getting into you at 5:32 mark. I was trying to sneak up the inside and my front end washed on me. Didn’t expect it to be that off camber around that turn
Man don't worry. If you really look, my wheels washed a bit too. and then that rider was stalled on my left...We both stayed up! When my wife watches my videos she says I am too aggressive sometimes. No such thing! I am being pretty passive, mostly...😁 None of us takes anybody out on purpose, but sometimes we get a bit close....
You mean the redneck accent didn't give it away?😁😁 Too many hills for Kansas too..This is in Dodge City / Cullman / Bremen, Alabama. About 10 miles off of I-65. If only there had been just a little bit of rain.....
That was me on the red bike with blue gear and Ty on the xr that come by at 11:18 1st and 2nd in pre mod. Kinda tough to pass in couple spots. Good riding! What do you use to record your times and course?
You young guys always get around eventually!😁 I use a GoPro Hero9 with the GPS turned ON to record the data, then use a program called Telemetry Overlay to extract it. The new GoPro has no GPS but other cams do. T.O. can also extract data from other sources if the cam has no GPS. It is very time/computer consuming process but I like the results. There are lots of other apps out there (some free) for this but this one seemed the easiest to use with tons of options for the screen. The creator of this has a RU-vid channel explaining it. Just search on RU-vid and you can see lots of different ways to do this. Thanks
@@alchrisr01 I have a hero9 black. I didn’t know it could do that. I’ll definitely do some research on it now. I’m curious of the speed I’m running at times. Thanks for the info!
@@goonrider8875 I saw someone else's video and that got me interested too. It is not so much time consuming as the PC does most of the work. I usually load it up and just let it work while I do something else. This video took probably 5 hours to process, and that does not include editing which adds some more time.
@@alchrisr01my video was only 46 minutes long for this race. Luckily it uploaded in about a hour. I do my videos with my phone though. I don’t have a pc or laptop. I’m not very tech savvy so there’s a lot I don’t know
The Beta has a horn😁. I now know that the rule book actually says no horn... I knew AMA had that rule. I suppose if everybody had one it would be a cluster..
We were trying to figure out who that was! We knew the other guy was Kenneth Graham. Hope you didn't get hurt too bad. I think Kenneth got pretty bruised up.
@@johnchafin3817 Kenneth didn't finish. Injury takes us old guys a looong time to get over. At least we are getting into the summer break after next week.
I was really please with the Beta, except for the seat! That thing is not made for us sit-down riders. And I have the "damage" to prove it.... I will be back on the KTM at the next race at Windwood farms. Hope you can make it.
@@alchrisr01 EVERYONE says Beta make the most uncomfortable seat in the business!!! (you'd think they would have addressed it by now although I've seen reviews where people say the latest model is not great, but better). It's designed for the young kids who never sit down! LOL
@@alchrisr01 looks like CJ got the Race seat. I did too, but I believe the Beta seat is better between the two. Both are rough on the rear end. I have ridden the Comfort by Seat Concepts and its way better.
All I can say is that thing " rubbed me raw":) I have the KTM high seat on the 350 and it is like sitting on a Lazy Boy. CJ is a stand-up rider and us older guys sit lots. He told me the factory seat was more harsh than the Seat Concepts. This is hopefully the one and only time I ride this bike because the KTM will be back running tomorrow. The Beta is a really great bike, but i did miss the 350 torque.
Great vid as always!!! What chest protector are you wearing? I have two really nice ones but want more shoulder & rib protection. Looking at some Alpine Stars. I have the Bionic Action which is just front and back, looking at the A 6 for $199 or the A 10 but that's a whopping $269!!!
Hi Bru, it is an old Troy Lee that is discontinued but I can't recall the model. I am like you and want the shoulder and rib protection and at the time this was the best I could find. It is past due for replacement and I am have the same issues as you trying to find something that will do what this does.
@@alchrisr01 Much appreciated! Yep, I just turned 57 a few weeks ago therefor we're close in age so I know you understand where I'm coming from with regards to protection. haha Like I said, I have two really nice CE 2 rated front and back protectors but then of course my ribs have started getting hit by tree branches, one time I fell with my ribs right on my handgrip as it was sticking up when the bike was lying on its side and my shoulder takes a beating on every fall. I even just started wearing elbow guards because I was riding that terrible "enduro" stuff and nearly shattered my elbow on a huge boulder. If they let me ride in an armor suit, I'd do it. My goal is this.....WHEN I fall down, I don't want to feel ANYTHING! LOLOLOLOLOL Keep up with the great videos!!! Looking forward to more shop vids!
@@alchrisr01 I wear a Leatt 6.5 chest protector and it has rib/side protection. I also wear elbow guards too. I like the TP199 version. It sure helped in the crash last weekend.
Afraid not. My KTM is still down for at least another week waiting on parts. I will probably ride CJ's Beta 250 next week at the SECCA race at Miller Creek.
Yea, I know. Sorry about that. The new mic I am using is not a really good one. Cheap Amazon unit. I hope i can make it work once I learn how to adjust it.
This video was my choice. I wanted the extra edge you get from the Rekluse, and it did work great! It made a great bike fantastic! The engine failure really sucked during the last race....
Chris to be on the safe side, go ahead and replace oil pump gear to update, and a good water pump. From my experience with my 350 xcf with the rekluze clutch the bike will run hotter than normal if you don't have a fan on it be a good ideal to.i had one on mind 👍
WOW! something so simple caused so much damage, that really does suck considering all the maintenance we do to prepare and still something so simple can mess do so much damage.
Thanks Donnie. I have been sitting online trying to figure this out. Anyway you slice it this is gonna hurt. If i don't get it back together in time I will ride CJ's Beta. The RMZ still needs work too.....
It was a great race! The first four of us were pretty much on top of each other all day, especially that first lap. I tell folks all the time that whoever makes the least mistakes is going to win, and I made enough for everybody...Enjoyed the race with all the other old men! 🤣
Nice video Chris. Hope your thigh isn't too sore today. At least you salvaged 3rd place, that's money in contingency! See you at the next one, Lord willing. 🏁🏁
Thanks Randy. Last night was a bear but better today, thanks. Unfortunately, my bike is to0 old for contingency this year😪. At this point I will most likely skip SERA next weekend and be ready for Homestead. I know you will be there!
@@alchrisr01 I sure was around. I'm Jason Davis, I was working at Custom when you hired in as service writer. I was assembly and prep until I finished automotive school and moved on to service work. But I still came around quite a bit. You had a maroon gs1150es I believe.
@@kawboyzx12I do remember you! Skinny kid, always wore a hat! I think you and Robert sparks were good friends. You did good work too, if i recall. My bike was an 82 GS750. I had 1100s too but rode the 750 to work alot. It is still in the garage and has not been run in 20 years... like several of my old rides. If you come to a SECCA or SERA race, look me up. Great to hear from you.
@@alchrisr01 that was me. 35 yrs later ,Still skinny and wearing a cap😆. I'll hunt you up at the next SECCA that I attended or the next Gobbler Getter. 🏁🏁🏁
I clicked subscribe on your channel. Looks like we may have been at a couple races at the same time. My son, CJ, got 2nd in B30 at the Gobbler last year despite an early crash. I did support for several guys. I will probably do support for the 24hr race this summer for a team too. I rode the Gobbler in 22, but pretty much ride the SECCA series with some SERA stuff that is close. We chased both series in 22 but that was tough.
Man it was good to see you back out! I understand the fender, but you crashed the battery too? We have had 2 races in a row that were tough. I hope Meridian is better!
RU-vid is taking forever to process this to HD! I would wait to watch any video until they are done doing whatever it is that they do. I don't have a premium account so maybe that is the issue. I have RU-vid TV so that should count for something!
That brings back some memories. It looks a little hard to spot the trail ahead in places. Nonetheless good job how well do you recouperate, and are you racing local or are you selecting certain events in the series?
Thanks Steve. We are racing the SECCA Hare Scramble series (seccaracing.com) and some of the SERA series (seraracing.com) races that are somewhat close. We would like to do a few other races that other series put on close by to us, but it's hard to race so much. A few years ago we ran 22 races combined from each series and that was a stretch. Just maintaining all the bikes is a chore not top mention there are silly things like work and stuff needing to be done around the house! Recuperation takes a couple days and gets better as the season progresses. As I type this my thighs are killing me after that ride!
Thanks. I am on a 2020 KTM 350 SX-F. I also have a 2015 Suzuki RMZ 250 that I really like riding, but it is a kick start bike and that is not working for me at my age. Appreciate you watching.
I was really lugging it trying to not spin. I will be uploading this past weekend's SERA race today. I twisted it a little better, but still sucked! The 350 is a tractor.
This was obviously a rough day.... Anybody out there have similar stalling issues? The last time we had this issue, I traced it back to the map switch. Not sure what it was but the issue went away when it was unplugged. That was with the stock ECU, we now use a Vortex and no issues until this ride. I put in a Tusk clutch pack and the extra heat I was putting in it may have made the clutch more grabby and thus easier to stall. The issue seems to be prevalent on wet, cold days like this one. If all else fails, I will just do away with the switch or get a Vortex unit to replace this KTM one.
Definitely doing an oil change.. its time anyway. I may pull the clutch and take a look. My buddies said they were yelling at the screen for me to downshift and quit lugging! I was just trying to not spin the tire and crash.
He's baaaaaacck! LOL! Glad you've recovered from that nasty injury! You should narrate throughout the entire race as I get a kick out of the comments you make more than anything! LOLOLOL
Thanks, brutus. I try to comment as much as I can, but I don't think I have enough energy to ride and talk all the time! 😁 I had hoped to have a better result, but it just wasn't my day. I did finish 5th.
I call it a Kazuki! It is a 2020 ktm 350SX-F with graphics to match my RMZ20. I have been a Yellow rider for way too long, but they don't have a button bike..yet....
