I rem this guy on telly in i think mid to late 90s...seemed like a fine player but mabbe lacking self belief or confidence i thought while watching him. Wonder what eveentually happened to him🤔
Rendell is as devious as she is astute with abnormal psychological traits of people and her uncanny ability to weave all that in a complex plot. Poor Wexford, I dont know how he keeps his sanity through all his 'adventures'. One of the best of Ruth Rendell! Watch it and watch it twice, the second time to see how the director has weaved in the psychology of the people involved both in acting and in script. No wonder, I had to stop reading Rendell long ago, as I found real life complex and taxing enough!!
Ahhhh thankyou. I’m watching all of these in venice Italy ,I n3ver watched television so I never saw these ,I’m enjoying inspector Wexford very much ❤❤❤it’s funny as I’m not watching in order
Too morose, depressing, occultic. Stick with Inspector Wexford! Sick minds cannot produce good, happy, hope-filled thoughts! And, as I just reminded - while writing this - God's Word (the God of All Hope) tells us to think on things that are good, pure, worthwhile. He knows what's Best, for His children.
My question: Why didn't Wexford show the picture to those people who knew Louise? Would have shortened things, of course, from a movie-length 2.25 hours, however. And now I see that plot point came up...
I have a lot to say in appreciation, to share my enjoyment with the people that have left comments of their joy with this show. 1. I used to read Ruth Rendell many years ago and stopped because her mastery of depicting psychological misadjustments and the crime that follows from that really got to me. In my opinion then, Ruth Rendell stories were impossibilities for movies and television - so I thought. and now I see the Wexford series and am amazed! 2. The pilot Wexford blandly gave the character profiles of the major players without any bombast, unlike the modern pilots. And now I notice how gradually they develop the characters through each episode. 3. Ruth's incisive psychological understanding of (bad quirk in) people is incredible - so vastly different from Agatha Christie and Dorathy Sayers, and closer to, or rather, PD James is closer to Ruth Rendell. But to me, afer I re-enter the Ruth Rendel scene, even PD James appears to me in her psychological analysis, more fictional and not as cutting to the core as Ruth Rendell does. The Wexford series shows how the British can be master over any challenge, from their world of 'understatemens'!!!! Thanks Mr. Goddard!
One of the possible toggles is to help correct the auto-generated subtitles. They are often confusing, often amusing. In this one the first time Wexford speaks his name, it comes as "wax fruit." Broke me up. Let someone else take the time to edit...
Mid 1980's? Probably the last of the British Police shows with no violence in speech or in action. They didn't even carry guns it seems! Then the world changed it seems....Great show. I will watch all available ones.
I begin to see in my brief exposure (thanks!) to this series, that everyone reasonably well-off has a drinks table--maybe they all still do, and maybe it's a Brits thing...
@@paulgoddard Ghost Hunters was a 2 DVD set and I found the 2nd DVD that had the story about Harry Martingdale's experience. LOVE WATCHING his experience.
I love Wexford but his sidekick is such a sour, uptight, prissy twat he's hard to take. I try to ignore him and enjoy the story, the scenery, the accents and the overall Britishness of this series! Thank you, uploader!
The idea behind the story is good but the story itself is very convoluted. It has too many unnecessary details making it hard to keep up with what's happening. But it was the basis for a great movie: Night of the Demon.
Absolute class! In every detail. Delight to watch. Music brilliant as well. What a ridiculous society we live in today, when some of this might be considered not politically correct. Far more disturbing is the fact that kiddies of very short age can now have access to all sorts of dangerous stuff, racism, sexism, porn, on the internet, and a lot of the parents are so busy scrolling their own social media that they're not even taking notice of the extreme rubbish their kids can see. These programmes were on telly at a time that kids were in bed, NONE of them were exposed to the awful stuff available now, with no proper control, through phone and pc screens. THAT's hypocrisy, and if governments have any sense whatsoever, they'll do something about it, hopefuly before today's kids are ruined, in all aspects of their present and future lives. Long live good (old) British comedy.
I love the way James uses very descriptive passages about location. They are almost always rural/seaside locations that add considerably to the atmosphere of the stories, conveying a sense of solitude and desolation.
