Hey Dr., I have a question. My mom's cat died while she was abroad and while we suspected it had rabies, the timeline doesn't quite add up. Before mom left: Bf noticed excessive drooling in the cat. Excessive. My mom left. About a week later, the cat stopped wanting to eat. But even weirder is that it stopped coming inside the house. Instead, it started to retreat to a bush near the bottom of my mom's property and kept mostly away from coming in, except rarely. Two weeks in, we were worried that the cat was not being fed (because it wasn't coming in). We started leaving out food and water on the porch. The cat undoubtedly would have seen it but for another week, it remained untouched. Then about 3-4 weeks in we had gone grocery shopping and noticed the cat followed us into the garage. It meowed like it wanted to be petted so I petted it at the top of the stairs without incident. Bf says after I went inside, it went and hid under the car. As he was carrying in the groceries, he says out of nowhere it viciously lunged out from under the car and attacked him. This was not in the cat's character, and I didn't see anything but I heard the commotion. After that, it bolted out the garage door and ran into that bush after which we found it dead another week later right before my mom returned. This happened years ago and still don't know what to make of it. I mention my mom being gone because upon her return she refused to accept that anything we said about the cat's behavior was true (also she never had gotten the cat vaccinated for anything). Is what I described consistent with rabies at all? Anything else that might have caused such odd symptoms and then death?

This phase includes unpredictable aggression and hyperexcitability. 5. **Brief periods of normal behavior** - Rabid animals may show brief windows of relatively normal behavior, like the cat following you and wanting affection, before descending back into erratic and aggressive behaviors. 6. **Progression to death** - Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear. The death occurring a week or so after the aggressive incident fits with this timeline. Rabies incubation periods in cats can vary widely, but typically range from **2 weeks to several months**, depending on the site of entry and the viral load. The fact that the cat was not vaccinated and exhibited classic neurological symptoms makes rabies a plausible diagnosis. --- ### Differential Diagnoses: Though rabies is a strong possibility, other conditions could also explain the behavior and death: 1. **Toxoplasmosis** - Caused by *Toxoplasma gondii*, this parasite can cause behavioral changes, lethargy, and neurological signs in cats. However, the level of aggression you described is less typical for toxoplasmosis. 2. **Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)** - FIP can cause neurological symptoms and behavioral changes in advanced cases, particularly the "dry" form. However, aggressive outbursts are not typical with this disease. 3. **Brain Tumor or Neurological Disorder** - A brain tumor, encephalitis, or neurological condition could cause erratic behavior and drooling, but the pattern and timeline here remain more characteristic of rabies. 4. **Toxicity or Poisoning** - Ingesting certain toxins, such as pesticides or antifreeze, could cause neurological disturbances and abnormal behavior, although the aggression would be unusual for these cases. --- ### Risk of Transmission to Humans If the cat was rabid, any bites or scratches to your boyfriend or others handling the cat could pose a **serious transmission risk**. Rabies can spread via saliva, even through minor scratches or broken skin. It’s fortunate this incident happened some time ago, but it underscores the importance of **rabies vaccination for all pets** and prompt **post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)** for anyone bitten by a potentially rabid animal. --- ### Final Thoughts While it is impossible to confirm a rabies diagnosis retrospectively, the symptoms and timeline match many of the disease’s characteristics. If the cat was unvaccinated and had possible exposure to wildlife or other animals, rabies remains a strong possibility. This situation serves as an important reminder about the critical need for regular vaccination protocols in pets.

My corgi had bit a few people and me several times. Vet fixed him we got training and then bit me while I was petting him once pretty bad. So we took him back to the vet and the vet put him on trezodone, four pills in the morning and four pills in the evening. Thank goodness the girl at the desk said wow you might wanna start him on two and see how he does because sometimes dogs lay around and then won’t want to go outside to relieve themselves. I had 12 year dog was having a kidney infection. His treatment was going on, one day he ate another dogs poop, I feel or I have a doubt since then his health became more worsening, on 25 June 2024 after getting back from hospital (drips, n his blood was drawn for blood test) he had got a seizure attack, but he survived. And then he got his next seizure attack on 4 July 2024, and last on 8 July 2024 back to back, we were just getting him to the vet but on the way he was no more. My dog is 11 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes in May. I took him to another vet two weeks ago, they were much more thorough, and a urinalysis showed him having ketones as high as the vet chart shows. I have changed is diet, but he will not eat now. He's on a natural blood sugar regultor because we really can't afford the $1000 the vet wanted to regulate then the $75+ dollars monthly for insulin and cyringes, etc. His glucose level has went from 399 to 364 last month to 313 Tuesday, but now he wont eat and looks and acts so lethargic. You had said something in the video about administering iv fluids. Can I do that and can I get these without a vet prescription?
