I'd argue the speed and intensity also leave your subconscious to feel like there's little room to breathe, followed by the appearance of a Pokémon you likely didn't even know existed and has no weaknesses. It's something that sticks with you.
Could you do a video on Terapagos' theme from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? It's such an interesting theme that's tied to Terapagos in some really cool ways, especially the time signature of a certain section
The game's soundtrack always carried a somber, hollow mood that underlines the game from start to finish. The few voicings, deep reverb, long sustained notes, and minor tonality. All these combine to convey that, despite having a grand adventure through fantastical locales, none of these places really feel like home.
I wouldn't consider myself a zelda fan at all. However, I remember playing this game like 10-13 years ago as a kid and put a decent amount of time into it. For some reason this song stuck with me. It's so catchy, carefree and memorable.
I still remember the first time I encountered Cynthia. Her Garchomp paled before my own (due to over-levelling and a Sword Dance setup) but the rest of her party were still absolutely formidable I think it was the Spiritomb and the Milotic that game me more trouble. I don't remember what my full party was the first time I faced her anymore but that music gave the encounter a legendary status. I knew of Pokémon since the first generation but Pokémon Diamond was the first game I bought so it made that game particularly special to me. Sadly my original copy of Diamond (along with my original DS Lite) went missing so my original experience is merely nostalgia now. The only game that rivalled gen 4 for me was playing Pokémon Sword. I guess the cultural references are more appreciated when it's based on where you hail from and it was a step up from the 3DS titles.
I mean, this does a__ear to be relevant again due to the fact that a remake was released on the Switch. I love this goober though. Always stealing one s_ecific letter of the al_habet every time someone even tries to mention it to com_letely s_ell out his name.
12:08 this C chord could also be seen as a modal interchange (borrowing a chord from another mode of G), because this is just the 4th chord of the G dorian mode. But seeing it this way, how can it feel like a resolution if it is a modal interchange ? is it really a resolution, or simply a light touch of hope and adventure sprinkled at the end of the song (which makes sense since g dorian is brighter than g minor) ?
Mind-blowing: the "creepy church organ music" effect of jumping down to a lower note and back up isn't really creepy in itself, it just invokes Bach's Toccata and fugue in d minor, which is the Hallmark piece of creepy organ music (along with the boellmann toccata). BUT why does Bach do that motion in the piece so much? It has been proposed, and I think it is correct, that the Bach toccata and fugue in d minor (whose origins we know nothing about) was originally a violin piece and only survives now as an arrangement for organ . In violin music it's a really common technique to jump down to a lower note like that, especially one on an open string. The technique is called bariolage and you can hear it, for example, in the prelude to Bach's e major partita. There's more evidence, btw, than just this, that the toccata and fugue in d was originally for another instrument (e.g., it's just about the only Bach organ piece that plays just one note at a time for substantial length). Anyway, really cool that this effect of "creepy church organ music" may really just be an accidental offspring of violin bariolage.
Fantastic video, thanks for covering this theme! I think it would be great to see a piano roll at the bottom of the screen for videos like this, to help with the approachability of folks like me who cant yet read sheet
Great analysis! I would love to hear your impressions of the Shadow Sirens / Three Shadows battle theme. Both the original and remake versions have so much character to them.
F Cynthia, I played through Brilliant Diamond undefeated. She was so close to winning but I used intimidate shuffle with my luxray and staraptor then spammed charm on my empoleon. Longest pokemon battle I ever had with a trainer but I beat her ass!
Depressing facts! Angela's backstory was that she was repeatedly r*aped by her father and brother. She dresses the way she does in an attempt to desexualize herself. Her mother is also a piece of shit for saying she deserved what happened. Next to Laura, she's damn near the only wholly innocent person in the whole franchise. And as old as she looks? What would you guess her age is? She's *_19._*
8:26 - "Irregular and ambiguous" and you put it EXACTLY over THAT ONE LINE of Laura's, cuz _gawddamn_ was *THAT* the line-- until the next game, when that ass Vincent says "Monsters? *They look like **_monsters_** to you?!"* And then he says he was kidding, and he's such a slimy fuck, you can't even trust him to be lying.
I like the idea of a character who is near invincible to all damage from a specific person once they take the person’s identity away from them… but that invincibility disappears as soon as you have knowledge of what that character’s true name is. Hence why Doopliss freaks out when Mario says his name correctly. It’s a really unique concept imo
I'm just a little sad there's nothing in this about Gerudo Valley, but this was an absolutely masterful breakdown of the why, the pieces, how they fit together, why they feel the way they do, and the brilliant results. Great video!
Diamond for nintendo DS lite Was my First Pokemon game, i think i had To try 3 times to beat her but i really liked her fight. My Team was: Infernape Dialga Darkrai Gardevoir Impoleon Roserade
In addendum: i had to look up some english names because we have different names In German. Infernape = Panferno Spiritomb = Kryppuk Garchomp = Knackrack
I hadn't heard or listened to Cynthia's theme or battle music in a very long time. But the moment i heard 2 notes of the battle song I instantly was thrown back to my childhood trying to battle this champion. I remembered every note of this song in a second
